Cam's UK MK2 Turbo
« on: 12:06:38 PM / 13-Mar-11 »
I had another thread but that was mostly my random museings and nothing really of substace so I've started a fresh. To recap, this is how it looked when I won the ebay auction in August 2008. First time I've ebay'd a car sight unseen;

Generally pretty tidy with the usual knackered spoiler. 40-odd thousand miles with paperwork to confirm but it hadn't been properly recommisioned after a long time in storage ie; things I would discover like the 10 year old cambelt.
Ran it as a daily for a year or so and tried to tidy it up a little. Got sick of the damn boot spoiler leaking rusty water after a wash so pulled the cnut off;

- z009 @ Billing

US Mk1 6-pack tail lights from Draconis in Washington state, America.

SSR Wheels from Ewan (formerly a Pratical Performance Car contributor) in Scotland. Also a fibreglass spoiler;

- Retro Rides Gathering 2009 @ Haynes motor musum, Yeovil.

Handling was pretty dire with god awful snap oversteer, much worse than my Manta GTEs prior. Blamed the shit tyres originaly but new wheels only partially improved things.
So I took it off the road in winter 2009 (IIRC) when it faied the test on various odds and sods, most noteably rear beam bushes. LOL they had like an inch dflection in 'em. In the mean time I bought a £150 bluebird as a daily (awesome car!), moved 200 miles way down south, sold the bluey, bought and had an accident in a 924 (whoops) so the '12 sat in my lock-up for about 18 months.

Kept on buying stuff for it though. Z31 rear arms;

DIY de-rusted with Bilt Hamber Deox gel, wire wheels and some mega graft.
Painted in a coat of BH hydate rust convertor/sealant, a couple of Electrox zinc primer aerosol and a layer of Frost chassis black. Crap finish as I brush painted them but hopefully they'll last forever now. I sure as hell won't be doing that job again anyway lol. Wider track and vented rear brakes are the adantages, 5-stud wheels not so desireable as far as JDM nostalgia wheels go, but no big deal.

Re-bushed the arms with N14 Sunny/Pulsar GTI-R bushes after I took out the factory shells without checking first.

The excellent Noalathane website in Australia lists all the dimesions for the bushes and I was able to cross-refrence them with the GTI-R bushes and get some locally from Powerflex.

Z31 Rear Brake Calipers;

-DIY rebuilt and refurbed. This time wth Deox Bath and satin high-temp paint.

Z32 Front Calipers;

Bought some cheap S14 calipers but each of the 8 pistons were seized and shagged so I took a chance one some ebay Z32s. They showed-up covered in faded red paint but with perfect pistons so they got refurbed and painted satin black too. I was going to detail the white "nissan" letters but couldn't be arsed in the end so they're all steathly in satin black instead.

Also aqquired a spare Z31 rear subframe on ebay and sent it away for refurb and camber slotting. Unfortunatly, the 'shop turned out to be a waste of time and all they managed to do in several months was make up the brackets and (badly) slot the holes. So I'll have to either finish that off myself or salvage what I can off of it and modify the original '12 beam. Eiher case I'll be able to compaire the two directly and finally see if an S12 will accept a Z31 beam.

US V6 SE Spoiler from Maxpow, Califrornia;

-Slightly larger than UK spec and a much better material. Will get another soon as I reckon someone on this site could use the white one. Probably get a black one to go on mine.

Front End;

I had always planned to make it fully adjustable chassis-wise (cos that's what I do) so I aqquired S13 front lower control arms/LCAs, S14 MOOG balljonts from RockAuto and hubs to match the 5-stud rear, facilitate bigger brakes and coilovers. One of the bearings wasn't in great condition so had to get another set inc. rears as no one would split a set- which is fair enough as I wouldn't split a set either.

Got a set of front and rear StopTech pads also from RockAuto as I fancied trying them. Also got a complete set of steering arms and ends from Camskill but they turned out to be Bluepoint (not stated on site) which are ok but I could have gotten MOOG items from Rock Auto for not much more so lesson learned there. The RA site states exactly what you're buying which is awsome.

That brings things up to date untill today when Mitch from Drift Garage and a mate of his delievered the '12 from Manchester;

-Well recommdended, thanks guys!

Plan for this year is to fit the coilovers, brakes and refurb everything underneath ie; bodywork, brakelines, fuel lines, proper exhaust and get it back on the road so I can get to some trackdays, drift events and generally have a laugh with it.
Got a mk1 bonnet (no bulge), another tailgate, USDM orange front sidelights, temp S14 OEM wheels & 205/50 16 tyres, UKDM mk1 taillights aqquired fom Si/Mr Bishi just before he was tragically killed and some other bits and pieces, (mostly mint exterior trim) waiting to go on.
Hopefully next year will see a DET (not good with engines though) and a quasi-race interior ie; lightweight and flocking but not bare as such.

So that's it. This is just the beginning lol. Loads more pictures so I'll edit and update as and when.

Gradualy pulling off the front and rear axles.
It's surprising how much stuff there is; little things I hadn't thought of. Not to mention all those little cnut rotten 14mms nuts and bots. Getting the front lip off was a right ballache.

Looks like you are doing it right, got 'er high enough to get under it easily, but not too high.  It will go pretty quickly, relatively, if you have most of your parts and such at hand.

What ever you do, don't remove the engine till you get those rear jack stands farther back.  I don't recall if you were planning on an engine swap.

When I did my swap I had my rear stands right on the cradle mounts and with the engine out, I could lift the front of the car with one hand.

Placement of rear stands...

...and me holding front bumper in one hand. LOL

Haha, no the engine is staying put for now. I had to put the stands so far forward as the rear beam 'n' diff is coming off and the stand had to be clear of the associated brackets.
Thanks for the warning tho.

Wow, where is the backside at?  Looks like someone has already tried to lighten it for ya.

Personally I would keep it, or at least the complete OE unit, it is your first line of defense in a collision.  Could save you from more costly repairs.  But if your going to "Track" it then fuck it...

Base of the front wings aren't too great, as usual. NSF isn't too bad;

OSF a bit goosed;

-Work's next door use fabrcator types so hopefully this can be chopped out and new metal welded-in. I'll be deleting the side repeaters so they need work anyway.
Ofcourse I could just refit the mudflaps and ignore the rust but I really want to bin those damn things.

On a more positive note, inner wings look pretty sweet;

-notice how the drain leads water right onto the base of the inside edge of the wings.
