CADET into S12 Notch Starting hesitation.
« on: 11:55:39 AM / 23-Sep-11 »
i recently swapped a ca18det into my 87 S12 notch and i have a battery relocation and there are 3 wires that are EFI relay or at least that is what ive been told the car will not start without those wires spliced together. when i start my car it wont even crank but i hear relays clicking when i fiddle with the ignition switch by turning the key on and off a bunch it will start after a while. i checked my grounds and everything is good maybe a bad relay? and also my ignition tumbler and switch on the steering wheel is getting 12 volt constant so when i turn the key off and take it out the car still runs how do i fix that? here is a little video i need help much appreciated.

When I get my harness rebuilt to stock specifications, I'll tell you what I find out. I don't know about anything on the EFI harness being spliced. The diagram doesn't exactly indicate that.

the oem positive battery terminal had them incorporated into the terminal itself i had to cut the wires out since i did a relocation and all 3 or 4 of those wires have to be connected for the car to crank
here is a pic of the original terminal wire i replaced.

What's the frame of reference for that bottom shot? Where on the car was it taken, facing what direction?

The cable with the cover is the positive starter lead. On my car, it runs right into a junction the previous owner made out of a battery terminal.

The black with white wire also leads off the starter, but I'm not all sure where it goes before it hits that little starter bundle again.

The other 2 wires are connected to the alternator, then into the starter bundle, and that goes to the body harness, on my car. It doesn't look like he messed with that set of wires, so I assume this is the stock layout.

When I have my terminals connected to a good battery, my car cranks just fine, but the ignition harness, among other bits of the engine harness, was bad (SEv6 ignitor on a CA-DET, what?), so it doesn't turn over.

An image to point things out: (taken, leaning over the passenger strut tower, looking between it and the intake manifold.)

Unannotated:

(Mind the butt-end splice and the missing bolts. They were like that when I bought the car)

They're not spliced on my car, and mine does what it's supposed to (again, except ignite, but that's an entirely different set of wires), so I wouldn't be so quick to try it.

That said, no fault in getting a cutoff switch, if the car's not a daily. I might invest in one if this harness rebuild doesn't fix the short in the system.

WOW. You guys really need to pull your harnesses out and clean them up. Are you running the lower harness for that chassis? The ECU wiring is cake for the CA18DET. The FSM has it, as well as some guides online(I'm not a big fan of). Anyway, find my old build thread and you can see SOME of my documentation. I'm not going to do a writeup because I have no time but I can only help when I'm free.

I ran through an FSM, and picked the DET wiring diagram apart. Still confused the fuck out of me.

I'll check your build thread though. Gotta find all I can.
