I looped the feed and return lines on one of my old Supra's because the rack leaked.  I'm sure the same is doable on an s12.  power steering racks all function the same way.

I believe there's a thread here about converting your power rack to manual.

Seishuku drives on that every day. When he drives the S12. Which is nearly every day. I think.

To answer your question though. There's no reason as to why you couldn't do the Y mod.

Yep, every day. It's my ride to work!
But yes, a loop like that will work just fine, I did that before I converted mine.

Looped racks should work no problem, Ive done it one VW's, Ive seen it done to Yota's, Honda, and everything in between. No reason it should'nt work for our s12's

Looped the rack on the first s12 I owned. Drove it for three months like that no problem.

I don't get why this is a popular modification. Sure it is free, but unless you have a horribly leaking PS system and dont want to spend the money fixing it - WHY DO IT?

With the exception of drag racing, there is almost no motor sport that doesn't benefit from power assisted steering. So you're really just inconveniencing yourself in order to save a couple pounds, and maybe 0.5% power loss at the crank?

hey dan

in my case its cause
-my pump bracket is fucked up
-my ps belt is broken
-my ps  consuming alot of space
-lines are leaking
-i want a manual steering but only PS was offered here
-free up some space which i really could use for other things (airfilter? coilpack mounting? catchcan?beercooler?)
-i have humungus power

keep in mind the car will be used for wangan style racing.....not much wheelturning needed here^^

In my case, it was actually a "new" reman'd rack, but I was getting tired of fixing crappy fittings and leaking hoses.
Also my pump was on it's way out, and being an SR, I would have to track down another one of those (or fit a KA or whatever).

Besides, I like the road feel of manual steering.

Ok so I'm gonna jump on the no power steering justification bandwagon and say that the first s12 I bought was an incredible piece of shit that would puke a quart of ps fluid in under 5 minutes. With that said, I love power steering.

i just removed the lines and left it open. no problems. a little fluid comes out for a few days or so. no big deal.

I originally deleted it cuz the pump and rack both leaked like hell and im not at all motivated to spend money on things i dont need.

the second time i did it was while i was actively drifting. I bent the rack (the actual rack inside the thing) in a practice event so i had to replace the rack and pinion. before installing the replacement I cleaned everything up. I modded it like in the manual steering thread. it was pretty easy. and i adjusted the rack pretension too how I wanted it. Worked awesome on the street and the track. Now that rack is on my notch. still great. GL
