Wont Crank with Key

87 SE, since ive had the car, theres been a push button wired in for the starter. it was all ghetto installed wiring and wasnt spliced or anything into the OEM harness. I hooked up the original starter cable for the solenoid and tried to crank it with the key and all i heard was a click in the passenger side of the dash. I tried a new ignition switch and that didnt help. any suggestions?

This same shit is happening to mine, though mine is stock.
I tried a new starter and still no work.

I think it's because I was charging the battery while cranking it the other day. Probably a blown fuse or bad relay.
Help!!!!

mine is stock too, i couldnt figure out why it wouldnt crank so i wired in another push button on my own from the battery to the button, then from the button to the solenoid, hasnt failed me once since i installed it

Have you tried applying 12v directly to the starter?

Starter works fine, the problem is the start signal. I wired it so 12 volts goes to the connector where the start signal wire goes so it cranks

It's possibly a relay, change out the relays underneith the battery near the battery and I think in a few other places as well, or  Check the FSM it was one of the first things I checked when it wouldn't crank when i turned my key. and all I got was a click click.  Mine was just the battery pos cable, in which your case possibly not. Just have patients and check the fsm, you will find it.

Just an update to an old thread. My resolution was "the starter"  Even though the button maybe working, the solenoid if it's malfunctioning or something inside blown, it will just click.
I just spent 3 weeks on this issue, tracing the wires with a new ignition and all, it was a PITA. But end my day was with the starter and 300zx turbo starters bolt up with 0 issues, I rewired the whole wiring clip that came from the battery to the plug in on the starter.

So if you ever revisit this on your Hatch, try another starter especially one from an 300zx (I think they are all the same model / part number) I wonder if you might be with that same issue as well. Even though the start button does work.

Yeah it doesnt bother me anymore lol, the push button is as reliable as can be, I grew fond of it

I started an s12 with a key once, I hated it!
