Fuel Pump Help
« on: 01:24:48 PM / 13-May-12 »
Don't know how many of you have had this problem but this is killing me.  I have an 84 s12 with a ca20 motor in it.  Everything electrical works and the fuel pump is getting power.  Checked everything down to the t and it all seems to work except the fuel pump isn't picking up fuel.  So bad fuel pump, easy fix.  Well apparently finding one is a pain.  Asked around on here and only thing I've been able to find is a SE pump and I'm pretty sure that will drown my little motor.  Just want to get it up and running to take it for a spin and make sure everything is in working order.  I plan to swap to a sr20 down the road and I was wondering, can i swap in a sr20 pump for the ca20 since it is a $160 bucks cheaper then a new ca20 pump or will that sr20 pump drown the ca20?  I've heard that the ca20 pumps will keep up with the sr20 motors no problem but then I've heard sr20 pumps drown ca20's.  Is this true or would I be ok with doing this preemptive swap?

Hey Hoogin, I have no personal experience, but rockauto catalog lists the same part numbers for the 1985 ca20 and the 87 6 cylinder. I have never read anything on here about needing to change pumps with motor swaps. My thought is as long as the pump supplies enough fuel, the injectors and pressure control proper amount to the motor. Only an inadequate volume would be a problem. Maybe the Colonel can shoot you a pic of his so you can compare.  Smarter guys please verify!

Hey red, thanks I got your message in the WTB forum too.  I appreciate the v6 fuel pump help.  As for this, I know the Walbro 255lph blows up the stock fuel pressure regulator and I've heard you have to put in a fuel pump relay.  Although that would suck to do, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get a beefy pressure regulator and just do that swap since the sr20 i want to run I want to push around 300 out of it.  So I don't know what to do because I have no idea how much effort that relay and pressure regulator are to change or how costly they are.  And the ghetto bypass of the harness a lot of people do, which I don't know if I'm comfortable with that.  I kind of want to keep it as simplistic as possible on the wiring front just because I am VERY inexperienced with wiring.  I'll admit I know the basics of cars but this is a big project and a big learning experience for me and I would just like some pro help as to what to do to get this damn ca20 running AND be preemptive for the swap I want to do without breaking the bank.  (college budget here guys, will improve a bit this summer just because more hours but still pretty broke, just fyi)

Just use a Walbro 190, should be fine for your stock FPR and will give you more fuel for whatever you might modify for later. Installation is pretty easy, very similar to a stock pump other than maybe a couple zipties to hold the new pump in the original bracket.

Hella flush and all associates should be gunned down for brainwashing people into thinking a 225 and lots of camber is proper wheel fitment. THAT IS EASY, anyone can camber a skinny as tire till it dosnt rub. Now fitting an 11 with a 315 on stock fender with reasonable camber, that is fitment. And looks, and performs better than both.
i dont own a s12 at the moment but trying to acquire one to get rid of my s13 hatch

Depends, are you talking about the KA24E or KA24DE? One is top feed, one is side feed (in that order). The KA24DE and the SR20DET are both side-feed injector styles, so chances are their fuel rails are similar or the same.
