Thanks Jay.

I like that cabin.  Theres so much...green.  There's just not enough trees out in cali.  Its probably cuz all the drunk teens decide to park in them.

whats the trade off though, on a house out there? stuff to do? winter weather? convienence?
Not saying its not a nice house. At MY age I would love a house like that...in the city. I have my country house...out in the boonies...near NOTHING.
The cabin, id take that as well. Yes housing market out here, in some areas, is high. BUT, with that price comes a LOT of amenities...
Oh and they maintain the roads here fairly well for the kind of snow we get.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

So much green? That's nothing.
Here's a little video I took with my cell phone a couple years ago driving to the place. This is the boring half of the road. the other side is WAY more fun. i'll get a video of that up shortly.

I'm buying the house to save money while attending Michigan Tech. Average snowfall is 208 inches yearly. Lots to do in winter. They celebrate it. I own 2 snowmobiles and an ATV, so I'll have lots to do.
Then in summer, There's lake Superior, The whole of the Keweenaw Peninsula, Hiking EVERYWHERE. Beautiful place.

The trade off is there's next to zero jobs. Very low income level. But it's so cheap, even a part time minimum wage job WILL pay the bill.

Michigan Tech even has snowmobile parking.

My kingdom for a place to go 4x4ing! There just aren't any places that allow that kind of thing close to me. Frankly there aren't a lot of places to do anything outside in Dallas. Of course, it's flat and all the (sparse to begin with) trees have been removed to plant buildings.

Ugh I need a beach vacation. But before I can do that, I need to get this death wobble sorted, at least. Last thing I need is a blowout on the 7-hour drive to the coast. There's a ton of fun stuff down in Corpus Christi.

Oh man, I'm picturing the Sanger on a nice boat lift by that dock and a slalom course along the shore - you have a nice set up there

There's 2 boat lifts up there not pictured. One for a pontoon, one for a regular boat.

I just haven't taken them down into the water yet. It's the entire family's cabin that has been handed down for generations. As of right now it's left to me, My older brothers, and 6 cousins. But Me, My older brother Kris, and my father are pretty much the representatives of it because we're so close to maintain, open it for summer, and close it for winter.

You can see the two of them in the background here. Foreground is a 60 year old brick grill. Inside is a 1962 Telefunken for audio. One of the local stations is a 1930-1950's big band and jazz station. Fit's the ambiance perfectly to hear Ella Fitzgerald serenading the world from an old tube radio. No internet. No phones. Just you, whoever else is there, and life.

More from when we were there 2 weeks ago. It's exactly halfway between Wausau and Houghton (Where I'm moving). I didn't get the dock out until later, after these pictures were shot.

Believe it or not, That last picture is from my cell phone.

OK so my mom was born in Wisconsin - maybe, probably we're somehow cousins; so I need to get licensed as a veterinarian in Wisconsin so I can enjoy our cabin more often?? And best of all, family gets free vet care - can't pass up a perk like that.

... Closest thing to that we have in my family is my great-grandad's farm, where he's lived since probably 1960-something. It's just a small farm in Utah. Mona, Utah. Small town, but it's basically impossible not to pass it on the way to Salt Lake City from anywhere south of Spanish Fork...

I'm rambling, because my family has no such cool things, being so splintered across so many states.

Beautiful Property!
Jobs would not be a problem for me, as my career is a specialty career. I can take it with me where ever I go.
Coincadentally I might be  up your way soon. I have been wanting to go back to macanak/ Mackinaw for some time now. And also back to Niagra and Bar-Harbor.  I wish snowmobiling and atv stuff was more popular here. We have the weather for it (kinda) and we are in a desert for the most part. Colorado Springs needs a lesson in City Growth....
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.
