Sad Paint
« on: 09:40:39 PM / 12-Jul-12 »
In 1986 or 7 my wife got hit right front fender. Most of the car's paint still has good color & gloss (lots of dings and scrathes) but the right front is fading and the hood is a disaster (ask Silverton). I used Maguiars #2 Fine Cut Cleaner the other day. Any suggestions for the hood paint, or does it need a strip & paint.
Rt door, still good shine

Rt front fender fading

Disaster hood & close up

That looks pretty far gone to me Red. I'm no expert, but it looks scaly.

Most of that is the clear, you might be able to get away with a fine wet sand and a good polish.

I was wondering if it was the clear coat. I have done zero exterior work. A few details please!

You can try and buff it out, but I think it's getting to be time to have it repainted. That's the bad thing about the paint in the 80's. The clearcoat cracks and scales unlike anything else. Older paint just fades and newer paint comes up like Neons but slower.

The Z I'm getting looks similar. Let me know how it goes so I know what's in store.

Go grab some 800, 1000, and 2000 grit sand paper, and a squirt bottle with water and get wet sanding!

Just work your way up from the 800, basically you want to knock off the nasty stuff with that, then refine that once it's smooth with the 1000 and 2000.
After that, just get your self some meguiars paint polish and start polishing.

Just whatever you do, don't buy the turtle brand polish, it doesn't cut unless you have a nice right angle variable speed polisher, the meguiars stuff you can do by hand and get results WAY faster... You'll thank me later.

Edit:
Oh, and look at it this way: The paint is already bad, so you can't screw it up more by trying... You can only make it better!

So, here's the results of sanding. Started with 400 & 600 to generate a white slurry, once through that I finished with 1000 & 1500. Definately a full thickness problem. Got to primer and bare metal in a few places - but looks alot better.

Next is Maquairs #2 cutter followed by wax. OMG there's actually a reflection again. Still wild spider web pattern too.

Did the shop that you took it to have a lifetime warranty on their paint? I don't know how thrilled they would be if you took it back for warranty work, but it can't hurt.

Any self-respecting shop will mediablast to bare metal, use a metal-etching primer, and go from there. Better shops will disassemble the car first.

haha didn't think of that. Have to look in my old receipts, see if the place still exists. Happened in 86. Guys that did the work are prob dead or retired

If the business still exists. That was still during a time when people took pride in their stuff. Hell, most of the body shops here still offer lifetime with their work.

You're the original owner. Can't say no if they are still there and had that warranty. ;)

yeah, but I got to take responsibility for letting sit outside for the last 20 yrs and being very neglectful in the washing & waxing department. Probably would still be ok if I held up my end.

Doesn't matter, Lifetime Warranty. They can't prove you didn't keep up with maintenance.

Actually, I severely doubt that. It just happened. I've never seen paint crackle up that badly in my life. And that's entirely besides the point. Washing and waxing only takes care of the surface. Yes, it helps deflect more of the suns rays and keep underneath conditioned, but what you have is the whole depth of the paint. It really wouldn't have mattered that much. It would still be similar to earlier in its days. Maybe like how it was 5 or so years ago, but I'm willing to bet this was a problem then too.

Been bad for several years, and is the only area of the car affected, and the only area repainted. Swing and a miss, no receipt found in the file. Can't believe it, usually pretty anal at saving stuff like that.
