Here's how I did it on my TE31... it was also covered in anti-rust grease... if you think your shit is bad, you should've seen mine...

First off, start by laying cardboard on the floor... or anything that you'll throw away after....

You soak a rag in kerosene (I used a leftover gallon of engine degrease that the previous owner had bought, but it's what it is... expensive rebadged kerosene).  You use it to softer up the undercoating a little.

They you use a very narrow putty knife...

and scrub the as much as you can...

Then you use some more kerosene to try and disolve what's left

(This is to show the difference where they used undercoating and where there was only antirust grease)

and you finish up with an other rag diped in varsol to try and get the adhesive out of there

Finish up with a wiremesh wheel on an angle grinder and your good to go...

One thing : Like you, I did it laying on my back, but you need to work above the area that you are not under... even there, you'll be a mess after that... but it's better that to have varsol driping in your face... oh and please do wear some glove... I can't work with glove, but I had to do that with some

Oh and this is about 1/4 of what came out from under there...

Good luck... but nothing beats the piece of mind of knowing that there is no rust under your car... and that you can spray it with a nice modern undercoating and that it'll be protected for years to come...

Apart from the exhaust, that doesn't look like a 35 year old car ;)

thanks for the tips and even more so for the pics (visual always wins)
i actually just started trying that tactic and also 3m black wheel on a drill, but i don't have any karosene so I'm using the power of oranges (goo gone) with agasket scraper... seems to work pretty good after time to soak
will give karosene a try too...

that underside looks smexy, what did you use to undercoat it?

about 7 cans of cheap undercoating from the parts store... well not the cheapest that is non hardening and non paintable but the second cheapest, the one that is paintable.  I think it's something like asphalt/rubber.  It cost something like 7$ a can for a total of 50$ to do all the underside, the rear wheel wells, the underside of the front fenders and the front fender support... and I think I didn't finish the last can.  Only thing I did before applying it was wash the parts with methanol to disolve any grease, kerosene or varsol leftover

If I were to do it again, I'd probably use a bedliner kit that they sell for something around 100 or 120$ instead of the undercoating can... cost twice the price, but that thing is sure to be able to take a hell of a beating and ask for some more right after ;)

i havent done mine yet but i plan to, i know the wire wheel is messy but it does quite the trick. i had a bunch of in my "new" fender so i used about half a can of wd40 and soaked, it made it very runny and about 80 perfect of the oil just ran off in after about 30 mins of sitting (thing with wd40 is that it needs to sit on/around whatever your trying to remove, not drip off). then came wire wheel and drill and wd40 sprayed cloth so the left over oil sprayed from the wheel didnt smudge, then dry clotch and it was 99 perfect spotless. although i must say it was far to time consuming so i can only imagine how long underneath of the car would take.
