[Today at 09:26:09 AM] Charlie S12: how much should i pay for a S12 with no motor or trans? it's a SE model.

[Today at 10:09:25 AM] Wonderingraven: 200 - 300

[Today at 10:18:16 AM] Wonderingraven: depending on the quality of the shell, if it's cracked and crappy looking 50 - 100

[Today at 10:18:37 AM] Wonderingraven: I wouldn't spend more then 300 because it's missing engine + trans

[Today at 02:16:22 PM] SchizophrenicMC: ^

[Today at 02:16:30 PM] SchizophrenicMC: Shells, especially S12 shells, aren't worth much

[Today at 02:28:39 PM] Brandon G: Yeah, unless they're absolutely MINT low km, rustless, don't expect to get much for one

[Today at 02:28:57 PM] Brandon G: And Sideways, it's coming lol, in due time

[Today at 02:29:51 PM] Brandon G: Waiting on my neighboor to lend me his engine hoist, then i'll have everything else out

[Today at 02:34:21 PM] SchizophrenicMC: I had to bargain with a mormon for an engine hoist

[Today at 02:34:37 PM] SchizophrenicMC: If I end up swapping the Saturn motor, I may not need one.

[Today at 02:34:45 PM] SchizophrenicMC: 1.9l all aluminum

[Today at 02:34:51 PM] SchizophrenicMC: Probably 200lbs or less

[Today at 03:40:42 PM] iceageg: just like my early subie engine

[Today at 03:40:50 PM] iceageg: superduper light

OK. I must just be the biggest idiot or something because this is driving me nuts. I have the suspension supported and have the shock mount removed from the control arm as well as the 6 bolts that hold the half shft to the companion flange. WHAT AM I MISSNG HERE???? I can\'t seem to get it sepperated from the companion flange.

Oh and I did see three small tabs and moved them out and still nothing.

Not sure if this will help, but here\'s the breakdown of the parts involved.  I\'ve only taken the halfshafts out of the diff, never the companion flange.  You may need to wedge something between it and the companion flange to pry, since you can\'t just pull on the halfshaft.

Its been a while, but I had the same problem, but I can\'t remember the details exactly.

The 3 tabs hold the cover in place, I don\'t think you need to undo them. I seem to remember having it fall apart on me.....

I also seem to remember using a hammer, and then the halfshaft came right off the companion flange. Eg corrosion set in, and effectively glued them together. PB blaster, and some gentle hits made it come right off. However, someone with more recent experience should be consulted, as I would hate to have something break due to a poor memory on my part.

Well I just took a block of wood and a hammer and gave tham a couple whacks and they came off. The cover that those tabs are attached to did come loose from the end of the shaft and grease oozed out. The spring was a bit of a PITA, but it\'s all good.

Both shafts are now at the CV shop getting looked over. I sure hope this cures my vibration, but for some reason I don\'t hold high hopes of this being the case.

So for now my car sitts with its ass in the air, no axles in and the diff cover off.

I just have this bad feeling that the vibration is in the transmission (auto) and that\'s not good.

here\'s a trick if you do still have the vibration ... shift into neutral. This effectively unhooks your transmission. If the shudder continues even in neutral, it\'s not the transmission.

What exactly is the vibration? I know I chased one forever on my Javelin ... ended up being a thrown wheel weight. Over 50 mph stuff would fly off the dash it was so bad.

Could be the driveshaft ... maybe a loose U joint

The more info you can tell me about the vibration, the better I can guess.

Is it speed sensitive? Like it gets worse the faster you go? 99% of the time, that\'s a reciprocating unbalance. What that is, is anything that spins, drive shaft, wheels etc.

It is pretty much a slow speed thing upon excelleration. Mostly in 1st gear, but a little in second. I have a bad feeling it\'s the trans. The guy at the shop I took my shafts to called and gave me a preliminary assessment and said they looked good on the hub end and the other felt good so I\'m really leaning towards the trans.

This is an expence I wasn\'t really prepaired for, but I\'ll manage. I have to get this thing fixed before I head out to California at the end of July.........UGH!!

I have also replaced the driveshaft support bearing and I inspected the U-joints at that time. All good there.

While I was removing the half shafts I also inspected the carrier bearings. All tight.

I\'ll let you guys know how this mess plays out.

You might also check the condition of your motor mounts and tranny mount.  Just another thing to check, although I would assume a failing mount would give you vibrations all the time.  Never hurts to check though.
