Intercooler ideas for the CA18et?

Has anyone (in Club-s12) taken the CA18et, and intercooled it. Or is it smarter to just go import a CA18det, or SR20det? If so, what intercooler and piping did you use, and how expensive was it? Information would be appreciated!

 Excuse the hand signals :lick:  
 
 Its a Starion FMIC with custom 2\" piping. I ran them behind the lights inside the bay and down to the front. I still have the A/C in, so it was a puzzle to get it to fit.
 
 Lots of ppl have IC\'d 200\'s with many different IC setups. Like all other things with these cars, you have to be creative and origional to get what YOU want out of the car. All I can say is with this setup anything after the IC was [span style=\'color:Blue\']COLD[/span], and I mean [span style=\'color:Blue\']COLD[/span]. [span style=\'color:Black\']Probally a good 20degree temp drop. The car LOVED it.[/span]

A front mount usually sticks out like that (which is no probs at all) but you can get a front mount hidden back a bit further if you remove the aircon or mount the cooler between the radiator and the air con core (have to move the rad back a bit) but this would likely flow a little worse than one mounted way out the front.  I have a front bar that will cover the core on my car no probs, just got to get around to modding it to fit.  I have a JZA70 core in more car but cardomain seems to be down so i can\'t show you the pics i have up right now.

im currently making endtanks for a new spearco core measuring 3x9x10in which will flow about 250-275cfm which is good for abour 250-275hp... the best part is the i can make the endtanks as needed so i can make these fir the ac equipped and non ac equiped

This will give you an idea of the size that fits behind the S12 front bar with minimal cutting.  From memory the cooler is 600x300x75 or so.

where the blow-by from the valve cover used to go into the stock turbo inlet pipe.

a guy on here is using a 91 ford probe gt intercooler. inlet and outlet are on the same side as the turbo

I have removed my A/C so finding placement should be relatively easy. Another idea I had for those of you who dont want to lose A/C is to swap to a smaller radiator, and then use a narrower intercooler (like an F-Maxx, or early Subaru Legacy GT IC). Then you could get electric fans for more room, I\'ve heard that early 90\'s nissan Maximas w/ the VG30de had an electric twin fan setup!?, If anyone knows for sure maybe you could post a reply? Of course everyone knows that the VG30de was an option for the s-12/ gazelle/200sx in some parts of the world, so the twin fans off the maxima (if it had them at all) should hypothetically be an easy match-up! At any rate I like the 91 Probe idea theres a turbo model in town, maybe I could swipe the IC while they\'re sleeping, LOL!, and an 87 Mitsu Starion so I have some options there. AAEEH, y\'know these people they go to sleep thinking everything is ok, everything is good and then they wake up and I\'m running across they\'re front lawn w/ they\'re intercooler in my hands! :laugh: Just kidding though seriously!

Yaa early Maximas have dual fan setup they work very well, but can be a hassle to find. I just bought a electric fan off a pulsar is covers the rad with a shroud and has one fan. Im not sure how it will hold up but i will post the results when im up and running.

I used to run a Permacool 14\" fan on the race car.  Didn\'t look as nice as a factory setup, but a lot lighter, simpler and cheaper.  Pulls 2950 cfms, and is $95 from Summit racing.  Well, maybe not cheaper depending on the junkyard, but the yards around here are freakin ridiculous unless you know someone.

I was planning on doing something like the electric fans, than moving the radiator forward about 2-3\"s, and I think there\'s plenty of room in front of the A/C condensor.  (My AC works too good to get rid of yet...  :laugh: )  I don\'t really want the I/C sticking way out down low.  Probably gets better flow there, but I don\'t want everyone to know what I\'ve got...   :lol:

ye,  my a/c sucked, so i ditched it.  then Iput it back in to refill it with some R-134A but never got around to it.  I just cut out the frame to fit that fat IC in there.

It looks like you might be able to squeeze one up there if you get rid of the hood latch support, but I\'m not sure if that would affect the strength of the latch mechanism.  Chances are that it wouldn\'t, but that\'s probably what I\'ll end up doing...

Speaking of A/C, anyone of you FMIC guys running A/C?  I know a few Honda boys that said their A/C quit working after they turbo\'d it, but you know how Honda boys are...

Yeah theres also always top, or side mount intercoolers :-? not as much flow, but you will get that bit of extra performance. Early 90\'s Isuzu Impulses had and AWD Turbocharged and Intercooled option w/ a nice top mount setup, and 90-93 Celica all-trac\'s had a decent top mount setup, only problem is finding them? especially when people think that they\'re made of un-obtainium!

Yeah i have cut mine out where it goes between that thin strip of metal above the bumper and the latch.  It effects nothing cos it\'s not really bracing anything at all.
Another thing you could think about is a water/air setup.  A bit more complex but the heat exchanger is small and the water/air core is small and can be mounted wherever.  More bits but they are all small and you can put them in different places around the engine bay.

I removed the front latch support and had problems with the hood flapping around and tearing the u-shaped piece of the unibody that goes in front of the radiator.  I don\'t have a grill though, and the problem did not show up until later (when I noticed the hood moving up and down on the highway!).  I had already tossed the stock support so I made my own out of a section of aluminum angle.

My \'95 Maxima with VQ30DE has a dual fan set-up, and finding one of these might be easier to find than the 2nd or 3rd gen maxima fans
As Joel was saying that Perma Cool one sucks pretty damn good...and better than most aftermarket dual fan setups!!  I have the 14\" Perma Cool one on my \'84 turbo and you can hold a piece of paper in front of the grille and the paper will slap up against the grille, and stay there while the fan is on....and thats pulling air through the A/C condensor and radiator.
But yeah I am one that would like a to get a fmic and keep my A/C functional since I recently just sunk money into a new compressor and dryer from Nissan, and R-134 conversion.
