Title: Steering Rack Compatibility?
Post by: NashvilEric on 10:59:56 AM / 10-Jul-07
Quick question--Will the power steering rack from an '85 ca18et fit into an '86 ca20e?

I'd like to buy a used part, but am not sure of compatibility.

Thanks!

Kind of on par with this topic.

I'm after a faster rack than the standard CA20 Powersteering one!

Does the S13 one bolt right in? Is it any better? I have also heard that older Skyline racks (non hycas) might bolt in too?!

Any info would be great.

I got a fair bit extra lock with the S13 coil over, hub, brake upgrade, i just would like a rack that can give me that lock a little bit quicker... so wasnt sure if the S13 rack would be quicker than the S12 one.

I havent heard of an S13 manual rack.. but that doesnt mean they dont exist.

Now i've been told that S14 - S15 racks are the same too... anyone know what they are like to swap in?

gadget: Since you have the s13 front suspension coversion it looks like, do you experience any bump steer issues like the lowered s12 suspension does?

S13's and S14's all had power steering guys. Some people claim that the HICAS rack has a better ratio.

What do you mean about the bump steer issues?

I tire scrub a little on the inside of the guard with the 16" watanabe's on... even with the stock S13 tires it did at full lock sliding...

But the rack never had any issues getting to the end.

About the HICAS rack, i had heard the same, i'm yet to have that confirmed though!

Very interesting.  I take it they are making them taller than a normal manual rack, as the manual rack I have is too short (the powered part, the spool valve, makes the power rack taller and the intermediate shaft shorter) and the intermediate shaft won't connect.

so does this mean s13 racks are not a direct bolt in replacement? i had read somewhere on here that someone had put one in their car with no issues at all (save for tie rods and suspension stuff, but is headache free with the s13 conversion). I know that Stanza's and Altima's around 85 came with manual racks, i've been trying to find out if these would fit our cars and if they are the same inner tie rods (meaning that the a1 ends would fit on it for s13 conversion guys). I'd love to find this out. I was on an auto parts site and when i searched for those cars the manual rack had the same part number as the manual rack for the same year 200sx, but i was confused at that point because the 200sx didnt come with a manual rack... this is something we need to find out because i'd rather have a manual rack than a power rack any day.

Very interesting, I figured there was a carry over, but was never certain.  The S12s technically had a manual rack available in 84, although I've never heard/seen anyone who has one in their car stock, although I have pics of one someone had for a 200sx, but unsure as to where he got it from.

I wasn't saying the S13 racks don't fit in, what I was saying is that the manual rack will not just bolt in to replace the power rack, because of the differences in height.  People say the S13 rack drops in so I wouldn't worry much about that.

ok, thanx for clarifying. At this point if i cant find a manual rack that fits i will be putting in an s13 rack when i do the swap.

That quick ratio S13 would be tits, but $400 hurts man.  Especially when you already have $200 in a S12 unit, I just gotta figure out the linkage.

As for the bump steer issue, I'm sure you're aware that as for our stock s12 suspension geometry that when you lower the car too much we experience the car jerking/swerving left to right when it hit bumps/dips/uneven road, etc...which is known as bump steer.

My car has about a 2" drop, maybe a little more and I experience some bump steer still even with bump steer spacers. I was hoping to get some feedback from the people that has already done the s13 front suspension conversion if it solved the bump steer issue or not.

Btw, this is my manual steering rack.

Well i have a fully adjustable camber kit... with the right alignment i dont really have to keep adjuting where the cars going.

Manual racks i've seen a few of over here... but i was mainly after a fast rack, not a manual on... with what it's intended for... the extra effort will require a steering wheel WAAAAAY too big.

To clear a few things up, S13 or any other rack will not bolt in to an S12, without some custom mods (Search 'S13 Rack', and click on the thread started by Jaimie (Ferret)).

Non-P/S and P/S S12 racks aren't directly interchangeable. The correct crossmember, steering arms (at base of struts), bushes, brackets, and lower steering column shaft are required.

Bump-steer can be corrected by bump-steer-spaced ball-joints or tie rod-ends.

Tip: If you want more lock in an S12 with non-P/S, fit the shorter P/S steering arms. Just make sure your wheel alignment is spot on, and you have adquate clearance between the tyres and the chassis rails on full lock.

Hi,

I have european silvia s12 (200sx) with bad rack and found remanufactured on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Rack-Pinion-Power-Steering-Nissan-200SX-84-85-86-88_W0QQitemZ190303688113QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item2c4efbd5b1&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318).

4920032F00 alternate: 4920032F06   - is for USA Models.

4920033F00 alternate: 4920033F06   - is for European.

What difference between them?

Euro is probably set up for RHD, and US is set up for LHD.
