Are you aware of the need to run ABS wheels speed sensor on all four corners plus the ATESSA control module in order for it to be AWD... otherwise, you'll end up with a very HEAVY rwd setup??

Is so, what rear axle/hub setup are you planning to use?

It will be used system "4wd" or "2wd" without use ABS......

It will be used system "4wd" or "2wd" without use ABS......

What I'm saying is the attesa system need to use speed sensors from the 4 wheels in order to activate the FWD portion of the AWD system.... if you open the AWD transmission transfer case, you will find a clutch drum inside that make a couple of chain turn your output shaft going to the front diff.... in normal driving condition, the "clutch drum" is spinning freely, making it basicly a RWD, that is why you can run a GTR on a RWD dyno.... When the ATTESA controle module (which is wired to all four speed sensor) detect rear wheel spinage, it activate the clutch drum in the transfer case and thus, transfer some of the power to the front wheel, with a maximum of 50/50 power between the front and rear axle...the ABS speed sensors are not to use ABS brake, but to use as input data for the ATESSA controle module for it to control an hydrolic pump to lock/unlock the the clutch in the bell inside the transfer case

In other words, if you don't connect an ATTESA controle module to 4 speed sensor, you'll end up with a RWD fitted with a transfer case that will be disconnected from the transmission permenantly, thus making it RWD and if you activate permanently the clutch in the transfer case by jumping the power on the pump, you will turn the system into a 4wd without a center diff, thus making it inefficient on dry pavement/street.... the beauty of the ATESSA system, is that it's not on/off like a 4x4, but it's constantly adjusting power biais between rear and front axle over changing driving condition...

Tom is correct.  It was half the reason why I chose not to go that route.  I am curious as to how this will be dealt with.  Not to mention, I've personally never heard of anyone using the needed ecu mated to an RB20.  If you need help, let me know.  I may be able to answer some questions concerning your project.

I will help Vovka a bit with the translation
It will be set up to manualy switch from 2wd to 4wd, no fully operational ATTESA system !YET!  Need to make a normally driving car first, then can proceed with the details. It will use manual switch, connected to the hydraulic clutch in the transfer case.
The front suspension is for test-fit only, he is still designing it. I say that the simplest way would be a custom front suspension like the RaceSilvia from Sweden uses.
When there will be updates we will post them here.

Cool... so esentialy this is not an AWD s-12... it's a 4x4 s-12... as for now with this setup!  Could be a really cool rally car, 4 wheel drifting all over the place   Keep us informed...

Ah and for Colin's info, I believe that the Atessa control module is completely independant from the engine's ECU, in other words, it's the same module for the rb25, rb26 and even vq35 (g35x)... oh and their is a 93 skyline AWD for sell with a rb20det up here... I'll go search for the link....

*edit*

Sorry, i thought it was an r33 but it's a 91' r32....

Post by: Nitro on 03:39:07 AM / 12-Jun-10
As for the VIN plate - yes, you shouldn't ask  It is something about registration procedures and other stuff - it's very complicated here.
The stock R32 crossmember fitted there with some modifications:
You need to bend or cut the part of the tension rod brackets to fit:
And need to redrill one of the holes, that is closer to the front end of the car for 4 cm. The brackets is from R32
(http://s43.radikal.ru/i101/0812/89/5523163ed3bf.jpg)
Stock VS R32:
Need to widen the hole in the crossmember mount, this one:
Also the R32 mounting brackets have long bolts, so you will have to use some washers:
The steering rack mounts is stock from FJ engine, but as far as I see it's the came as from CA

Well, some thoughts that may help since you're already setting up your subframe and wanting to do the AWD/4x4 system as mentioned earlier.

The RBs are front sump as are the S12s.  The cross-member sits behind the sump.  Also, the stock RB's oil pan is a single piece, as you showed a pic of, with the front axle setup as part of it.  That means, the front axles are too far forward for your stock strut towers.

The Z31s that had the RB20 (the 200ZR) had an oil pan made up for them to accommodate the fact that they are rear sump (Z31s).  But that was also still designed for a RWD.

man that require extensive modification to make the front axle line up with the diff... i wonder if it would've been easier to move the front differential backward, in line with the stock front axle by changing the diff mount and shortening the front shaft and then redrilling the oil pan for the drive axle to pass through in line with the new diff placement... In my mind, it would be easier than extending the whole body work forward a couple of inch.... and the wheel wells will probably need some modding in order to clear the wheels at full lock

*edit*

And looking at your pictures, you seem to have used a standard rb20 oil pan, I can't see the front differential and the the driver half shaft hole in the picture where you drop the engine in... how are you gonna send power to the front wheels???
Title: Re: S12_rb20det_4wd
Post by: RB25sx - SLPR on 04:55:15 PM / 06-Nov-10
First of all let me state - I am not a hater. I love that you are putting this much time into an S12.. I just fear you may have bitten off more than is manageable. I have two primary concerns, and they both involve the 4wd system.

Now this is off a gts-4, correct?

The gts-4 and gtr share a common front suspension setup which uses a dual balljoint lower control arm (no bushing on the inner), and an upper control arm connected to a link bracket in the wheel well (dual bushings) - this is to correct caster and camber primarily (works in cooperation with the tension rod). What I am worried about is that you have moved to an S12/S13 variety suspenion  which has only one balljoint, and an inner bushing.

So you chopped off the entire upper arm, and are planning on welding the coilover sleeve body to the side of it.. That is going to take some very thorough thought to get it even close to good enough. And even when it is put together you are likely going to suffer from random caster and camber changes which will make the car almost undriveable - no matter how stiff the front suspension since the play is inherent in the LCA.

My other concern is the Atessa wheel sensor system. From what I recall it distributes torque based on wheel sensor input - though on the gts4 it may have been a driveshaft mounted sensor for the rear wheels and 2 front reluctance/abs sensors on the hubs. Are these sensors being included, and since they are part of the chassis harness how do you plan to integrate them into your s12 harness?

Best of luck.

-Dan

Let me reply for him. :)
As for the front suspension - it's still a draft. Not a final decision.
The Attessa system wont be here - there will be manual 50/50 - 0/100 switch for the first time, and after that he plans to make his own control module, that will distribute torque smoothly when starting.
As for the oil pan - he plans to finish the suspension first. Then he will swap oil pan and attach the drive shafts.
Title: Re: S12_rb20det_4wd
Post by: tommy on 11:01:43 AM / 07-Nov-10
I also do believe that the first ATTESSA generation were using a speed sensor in the diff for the rear wheel...

Why go custom on a awd control system when you already have access to something that works and works good???

stick with the 2 speed sensor in the front hub and get a rear diff on a 240sx with ABS (yes you'll have to mod the mount and the driveshaft since it's a short nose r200, but you've got your rear sensor) and steal an ATTESSA control unit from a r32 and wire those shit on a custom harness (I don't really see the need to incorporate it into the s12 chassis harness) all you have to do is run a high pressure pump (electric or mecanical (lets say hook up an other P/S pump on the engine where the A/C use to sit)) and make it push ATF or power steering fluid (out of a small external reservoir) much like the standard ATTESSA that uses a pump inside the rear diff to provide the tranny with oil pressure to work the clutch that transmit power to the front axle... after this, the ATTESSA control unit will just adjust the amount of pressure that get to the center clutch and control eveything much like it does on any ATTESSA car

Because now all you've done is create a real complicated and real expensive 4x4 car... without a center diff, forget bringing this on dry pavement (ever heard about transmission wind up?), it'll behave like a truck when you've got the center clutch engage and when it's not, you've just got a hell of an heavier and much complicated Collin's car (the way it used to be)... and going custom on the awd control system is still gonna require to get some kind of oil pressure in the tranny to control the torque biais to the rear wheel and then figure out some kind of management for it... which will not be any easier that using what is already used in the r32 IMO

I'm not hating here and I absolutly love the idea, but I just don't think it's been thought through because if you don't solve the awd management, you've got yourself a pretty hard to make rwd car or a 4x4 truck... oh and I don't think he uses a rb20det from a gts4 since the oilpan has no axle going through it on the picture, so it's standard rb20det on a awd tranny...

Anyways, good luck with it

I like your style un derstand what you are going thru. I'm half way thru fitting a VH41 into an S12 with 4wd, Using R32 crossmembers and a VH41 with a diff in the sump like yours. Couldn't getn the steering to work so had to use Toyota hubs to use McPherson struts and R32 bottom arms.

Seems to be going well. Good job! I think we have the first dual arm suspension on an S12 - you beat me to that one by several years.

This is still awd? How long till the front shaft go in?

Really glad you guys went the route of switching to double wishbone suspension instead of welding a shock body to the knuckle :)

Looks like its coming together.

Have you considered using a gts-4 or gtr front cross member? It has an allowance for the axles to pass through.

If you are referring to the reproduction Gran Prix Kit it was originally made by someone in Poland and I think he sold the mold to someone else.  This is what I can find from IOT:

https://unqshop.com/nissan-silvia-wide-body-kit-wide,f,11,number,720437

and this:

and in summery try contacting avb sport  instead, but the post was back in 2014.

Looks like a good print.

The driverside ones are the ones though i think.

Theyre far more delicate and would probably need revised as 3d isnt as strong as the injection they were originally made of.

If i may ask, what printer, and what drawing program are you using?

Im using ender 3 and an older autocad.
