Title: Ashley's S12 Awesomeness
Post by: ashleyanne on 04:35:05 PM / 14-Aug-10
So I'm not quite sure if it's too early to start documenting on my car. I figure it would be fun to just be able to keep track of everything that I'm doing, and then by the time it's done, I'll be able to look back at my progress. Not only will I be able to enjoy my car when it's super baller, but I'll have a reminder of how much hard work and learning it took to get where I'll be. I'm super excited.

Like I said in my welcome thread, I plan to throw a CA18DET into it. I have intentions of drifting it. I love how clean it is, although there are minor imperfections.

I'm very excited about turbo Delorians. :]

So, my car has a killswitch.

I'm pretty excited about that, most awesome security device ever. Will come in handy as my car becomes more and more baller, even though I plan on getting an alarm anyway. That won't be for a while though.

my car came with a push button start...but it was dangling by the ignition...I moved it to inside the cubby hole underneath where the stereo is supposed to be...now whenever I go to drive some one elses car I reach down there for the stupid non existent push button start.

I will try to come up with some turbo delorean stickers later when i get a chance! lol!

Aw way to take all the fun out of a Beemer. That's pretty fail, I'm not gonna lie.

This makes me think of drive-by-wire cars. THAT is depressing. I drove one, and then I had to drive an older Volvo, which made me realize how much cars actually respond. It was lame when I was stepping on the gas and there was a delay in movement.

I'm not gonna lie either. It is... ESPECIALLY on an E30.... HOWEVER! All I need is a single mass flywheel, and a manual driveshaft, and I have everything else to swap her over.
Do that, Throw in one of my LSD's (I haz a 2.93, a 3.73, and a 4.10), and have a rip or two...

car looks good! on a side note its not a very wise idea to post pics of where the switch is located. (on a public forum) relocate it! that is the most common place ppl look for kill switches when stealing a car. just my two cents.

Welcome, glad to see the Lass's on the site.  Now put down the make-up and get sweaty...

Seriously though, your nails are just the right length to be useful, I find it handy to have some nails to slip washers into tight spots and such.  When I was active duty my coworkers found it odd but I could get those tough jobs done faster.

Yeah, this is true. *facepalm* Well now I feel dumb.

So guess what?

1. I wish that I could go on the forums while I'm at work, but my phone's browser is retarded.
2. I have a story.

Yesterday, I was on my way to work, and my dash lights were on. Fuel, seatbelt, e brake, coolant, battery light...and my headlights seem dim. Alternator, I think.

Now I get to work, and I let my car sit. It's 4:30 in the morning and it's dark plus I need to be at work. My temp gauge doesn't climb any more than usual (about a 1/4 of the way) but I pop my hood, and all I hear is sizzling. Awesome. My car sits for three hours til breaktime and I go out there to put water into the radiator. I pop my hood, everything seems fine, and I dump the water into the radiator. Turns out it's full. So I start my car to let it suck up the water and right away I hear this awful noise. I look to where my fan is, only to see that it's snapped off, sitting on my belts and hitting them.

and before they did so, my hood opened fine. The release is hard as hell to pull, any ideas?

Much appreciated.

never saw a water pump fail that way

changing it is pretty easy.  if ur not too experienced with automotive work its best to google up some universal tips for water pump swaps.  also do urself a hugh favor a refer to the FSM for the exact procedure.  its available somewhere here in a sticky.  i havent messed with a 20e for quite a while but im pretty sure u dont have to touch the timing belt if u dont want to.  it would be a good time to change it if it hasnt been done though.  refer to the FSM for that as well.  GL

Post by: sam31183 on 03:29:54 PM / 18-Aug-10
I have always had to mess with the timing while doing the water pump on the 20e...and it never ends well as i despise the timing belt tensioner on the 20e....this is one of the main reasons why i hate the 20e. There is no doubt some trick I have missed that prevents you from having to mess with it....but it shouldnt be as hard as i have made it out to be...it just looks like a giant pita once you get so far.

I saw ashley quoted me in her sig....that is freaking win!
Title: Ashley's S12 Awesomeness
Post by: 200sxkitcar on 10:52:01 PM / 18-Aug-10
You need to remove the timing belt to change the water pump, iirc.

I believe the tensioner gets in the way of the water pump bolts, thus you have to remove the t-belt, basically.

New water pump is like $30 or less.  I have at least 3 fans in stock (haha) and other parts, so if you need, etc.

If you're not super comfortable with the work, I can do a full pictured how-to, seeing as I have all the necessary pics, I just haven't gotten around to doing it.  If you follow the FSM (download on here in the General Tech section's stickies) it is fairly straightforward, you already have quite a bit out of the way.  I do recommend an impact on that 22mm crank bolt to get it loose btw, its not impossible otherwise, but makes life easier.

I've not found a fix for the hood pop-up issue, on cars I've had with the problem, a bungee cord of sufficient length so I can pull it up a bit while grabbing the release has usually worked.

GL with the build and keep us updated with pics!

Today failed.

I got all my belts off, and found out that my timing belt is brand new, pretty much, after I already bought one, ha.

I appreciate all the parts that people have for sale, haha. But I got it. Autozone FTW. I had actually called and ordered parts through Nissan on Monday, just in case Autozone wouldn't suffice. Turns out even OEM they can't order fans for the S12 because they're too old and don't make them anymore. For the time being, I'm going to use my old one just because I don't have the money for an e-fan. Soon though! I promise :]

Getting really defeated by the car. So the timing belt tensioner allen is stripped. It's between a 7mm and a 6mm (7 being too big, 6 being too small). It's almost completely rounded out.

I tried hammering a 7 into it, and none the less, I haven't been successful. Lots of stress-- the two guys who said they would help me out have both been lagging for a week. I don't have rides anywhere except to get to work.

I was going to try to use pliers to get it out since the hammering/filing idea didn't work. Surprisingly, neither I or any of my roommates have pliers. I need a ride to get some.

So. Incredibly. Frustrated.

Picture time?

you could try pliers, channel locks, large vise grips.  out of them a big pair of quality vise grips might do it if u clamp them on very tight and use a heavy hammer on them to break it loose.

ya EZ outs, also called screw extractors.  you have to drill the hole in the allen bolt deeper though.  the ez outs really only work if they can dig into the metal.  honestly i've had mixed luck with them.  usually if the bolt ur tryin to get out is tight (which urs is) then its not comin out.  use one of the larger ez outs in the set and drill the hole large to match.  small ez outs will just snap with the torque that bolt probably has.  oh and that bolt will be made of somewhat hardened steel so you'll need a TI coated drill bit or even better a cobalt coated one.  GL

any way u go u still need a replacement for that allen bolt

Grab-its work very well, I used those on some busted exhaust manifold studs with great success, its a good idea to soak the bolt in penetrating oilfor a good day or so to help the process.

If you see in the reflection of my glasses, that's the furthest my arms go so psh on the picture.

I considered vise gripping it out and EZ outs. However, like I said, I have no ride anywhere so I can't really go and buy anything at the moment. My friend just woke up though, so we'll see. I'm pretty irritated by this :[

I did nap though, from the time of my last post to just now, so I'm feeling a little better about the situation. :]

thats why grab-its are win, they dont usually snap.

another option is to use a dremel and grind some flat surfaces on the sides, that way you can get a wrench on it.

Extractors are junk, they rely on drilling the hole, and they push out on the sides, making the bolt tighter.

Option One: Left handed drill bit. Drills out the center, and the walls collapse, loosening the bolt, tightening on the bit and it comes right out. All in one nice, easy motion. Best size is a tad smaller than the inside diameter of the the threads, but guesses will most likely be fine
,
Option Two. cut timing belt. MAPP Gas torch and a GOOD set of vice grips. New timing belt required

Option Three. Angle grinder, Cut a slit on the the surface, put a chisel or a flathead (Thicker = better, of course) as far out on the surface as possible, tap with 3 lb maul to turn it out.

Option four, cut off parts of head to make oblong with flat sides rather than a circle, same thing with chisel, flathead, or vice grips. (Mentioned above)

Option Five: Screw 20e. KA swap <- My recommendation

I've had this happen.

A pair of vice grips on the head of the bolt, they don't need to be super flush, just solidly on there, and loosen.  Unfortunately this is quite common with the single cam CA's, if you need a new one (as always) I have several about the place, ships easy in an envelope.

With vice grips, you should be ok.

Flush all the coolant while you're at it too!  There is a plug on the lower back part of the block behind the exhaust manifold, it is at the bottom rear of the water jacket and if you remove it you will drain the whole engine part of the system.  don't forget teflon tape or paste when reinstalling so it doesn't leak tho.

Carefully drill out the hole until there are just threads left inside. Using a scribe, clean as much of the threads out, then start a tap in the hole to clean out the rest.  If this fails drill over sized for a thread insert.

Lotsa luck, Wolf

Cars = patience, women = no patience.

Got a wink mirror, a 12" sub, a new deck, powerbass speakers all around :] cleaned up my engine bay a little and getting a new aluminum overflow tank soon. Got rid of my hubcapz and steelies, replaced with wheels off an 86 s12...

Looking to do a ka24e swap. Think its most simple, cost efficient and they can make 1000hp +!

Wait, rephrase that,

Wish we had females into decent cars in NZ.

Especially ones with a bit of knowledge about what they're doing.
Car is looking good btw!

+1, the "E" is a "boost only" motor IMO, unless it is free, then it's a freebie upgrade. Otherwise, the KA24DE is the way to go. If you want to be different, don't sacrifice power and practicality for uniqueness, find other ways to be unique (such as engine bay color scheme, bolt-on choices like superchargers, or nitrous, something nobody seems to play with on here).

Thanks :D yeah I plan on boosting it :D I would like a supercharger because I dont want boost lag, plus how awesome would a super loud whine from my car be? Turbos are cool but lag is not and I dont really want a bigger displacement motor. Plus I pro/conned other motor swaps and eh. Haha. Thanks for not hating, everyone keeps saying,"just spend a little more for a lot more power blah blab." 240 fanbois lol

I dunno if I'm weird, but I love turbo lag.
It's the calm before the fury. I HATED when my probe made 20psi at 1400 RPM. Was the worst thing imaginable for city driving.

no your completely normal! i love turbos and lag too. nothing like free energy producing more power. turbo>supercharger

i have a 1988 mr2 supercharger in my garage, it has a electronically controled clutch to activate the pulley to make boost. that would be nice because you could wire to a switch and activate it when you want. but the whole assembly is fucking huge and wouldnt fit with lotsa work.

I almost cried reading that, haha.

I used to like/not mind turbo lag, but some of the driving I would be doing down here, I would hate to hit boost in the middle of a turn and swerve off the road. Sounds absolutely terrible haha. I mean I guess I would eventually get used to it and drive less ridiculous, but eh. I've been throwing around the idea of turbo or supercharger. Figure, want more power, just get a bigger pullley.

No hate for turbos though, believe me, I like them. I just recently painted a Garrett T28  pink, I'll have to post pictures :D

that's why blowers are so kosher, you don't suddenly get a huge hadoken of power to the face and spiral off into the weeds.
Title: Re: Ashley's S12 Awesomeness
Post by: ashleyanne on 05:23:00 PM / 24-Jun-11
Yeah and that's what I'm going for!
Title: Re: Ashley's S12 Awesomeness
Post by: Arro on 05:29:03 PM / 24-Jun-11
Turbo lag is either because you have a REALLY big turbo (think T4, T66, 20G, Holset, etc.) or because your exhaust is too small, and your BOV sux. If you set it up right, a good turbo will hit full boost so fast your head will spin, and you will laugh at people who talk about "lag" as a motivation to look at superchargers.

BUT...

If you go supercharger, there are already adapter plates for the KA24DE to use an Exterra blower, and I think only ONE guy has done it so far. It works well with the DE because the intake manifold splits into two parts, and the blower replaces the stock plenum section... the adapter plate makes it BOLT on. The KA24E intake manifold doesn't allow for this, and you'd be stuck with either a centrifugal blower (expen$ive) and a custom mounting bracket, or an even more expensive custom intake manifold for whatever random twin screw blower you want to try.

Also, you might not be aware of it, but the KA24DE uses side-flow injectors that are compatible with the SR20, meaning that SR20DET injectors are a cheap upgrade for a KA24DE going boost. With the KA24E, the top-flow injectors will require more expensive aftermarket, which usually means a custom injector building shop (mail order, lots of expense).

This is why I was telling you that as you get into things more, the KA24DE is a better choice on the whole, regardless of what you intend to do with it. I know you want to be different, but understand that the reason why it is more popular now than both SR and KA24E is because (at least in North America) it is the wisest choice for a variety of factors.

Add to that the fact that you can indeed obtain aftermarket cams for the KA24DE in a variety of specs, as well as adjustable sprockets from vendors, and it leaves me wondering why anyone would choose a KA24E over a KA24DE unless they are getting it for super cheap or free.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to ram "KA24DE" down your throat, Ash :P I'm just pointing out the details here. I'll be honest with you, when the first few people on C-S12 were just TALKING about KA24DE's going into S12's (many years ago) I was resistant, believing that the CA18ET was a better starting point (or even the VG30E). I was highly resistant but now not only am I a believer, but I have the proof revving quite healthily in the engine bay of my own KA24DE-powered S12. It's not boosted yet, but even still, I have a good amount of power more than a KA24E... I'm already VERY quick down the road, and I know that boosting it will be even better. But the nice thing about the DE is that in the meantime, you have a nice, peppy engine that gives you a respectable performance increase.

Just some things to think about. Might as well throw in that you might want to read through this, too:

http://club-s12.org/v3/index.php?topic=27031.0

Also, it comes down to what you want to spend. If you're willing to toss in lots of $$$, anything is possible with the most unlikely of engines.

Title: Re: Ashley's S12 Awesomeness
Post by: Arro on 05:36:43 PM / 24-Jun-11
The KA24E has less power... 140hp and 152tq vs. the KA24DE's 155hp and 160tq. That's 15 more horsepower, and nearly 10 more ft lbs of torque. There is a good deal of that due to the head design, plus the 16v head flows air better at the top end, meaning that custom cams can take better advantage of the top end. It also means that as you increase airflow (think boost), your get more power per extra PSI of boost than you would from the SOHC KA head.

It also employs a more advanced ignition design (even more advanced in the 1995 and up models), and a superior fuel delivery system (including the computer).

You can also use NISTUNE on the KA24DE, making your standard computer a fully-programmable ECM.

Also, there will be more room for a supercharger in the KA24DE as the intake wraps around downward.. more room there than if you had to cut the KA24E manifold and fit something there. Not impossible, but more difficult.

there's really no point in a KA24E swap with how cheap DE's are from s13 kids... make friends with somebody and grip yourself a KA24DE + 5 speed from someone that's doing an SR swap for like $300

It seems like most people have had a lot more problems with the ka24de, didn't they have some recall from a bogus chain guide or something.  I know one of my friends the chain busted through the valve cover.  I'd go with the KA24e since it seems like they're a little more reliable.  If your planning on turboing I'd go ca18 or sr20 though.
Title: Re: Ashley's S12 Awesomeness
Post by: Arro on 02:37:20 AM / 27-Jun-11
The first year ones found in the last S13's, some of them had that problem, but usually the chain guide was just loose and resulted in chain noise; what you're talking about was not related to the recall and is an uncommon problem.

If anyone really wants to know what both engines can do, and what problems they have, the prudent thing to do would be to sign up an account on ka-t.org and read the testimonials on the forum.

On my Rust bucket S-12 (1.0) I sealed the two holes with Black RTV.  I placed small pieces of tape on the inside and smoothed the RTV very carefully from the outside, once it cured (completely) I removed the tape from the inside.  It is no big deal to cut it free and clean up the hole if you want to re-install the motor.

Ashleyanne -  I seriously want to know about this guy that does custom windshields.

So, this thread is coming back. I pretty much fell off the face of the Earth for 4 years, but I still have my 12 and she was just recently parked for teardown.

Currently, the 12 is in the following condition:
Gutted interior
CA20E with a massive oil leak from rear main- 186xxx miles
No brake booster, no power steering, ruined passenger front brake caliper
No AC- dat weight reduction
2.5 in exhaust
KA radiator
Intake
Cut rear springs

Originally, I was thinking a 1UZ or 1JZ swap. Scrapped that idea- going single cam KA-T. I have the full motor and trans- pulled out of a car running. Tearing the entire motor and trans down, thinking low compression turbo. I want completely new everything.

So it begins... Again...
