Title: Marks S12 Grand Prix
Post by: sunny1600 on 09:11:46 AM / 05-Feb-11
Hi guys

I had my eye on this GP for some while now.  But I couldnt afford it, the price was too high. So at certain moment he dropped his price and I made him an offer. He accepted so I suggested to make  a first payment to him, He agreed but then there was some guy from Poland that wanted to buy the car for more money. Agreed to pay his price and make a first payment.
Hadn't heard anything for a couple of days... started tripping out missing the opportunity to buy this car.
Then I just received email from seller that I could make first payment and collect the car.

Me is happy

So soon hopefully I'll be a proud owner of silvia S12 Grand Prix from 1986.

And the best part is that in Holland cars till the end off 1986 will have no road tax

So plans are

- coilovers (saw some BCracing)
- polybush the S12
- brake upgrade
- maybe other rims (like 10J rear)
- rollcage

ow and a guy I know at the dutch nissanclub suggested to make the FJ20 FJ20E+T.
Wouldn't say no against that

Plans? Scare the living sh** out of those beemers on the Nordschleife

Some pics of the car

Early rise, at 8 in the morning I was at my mate's place to collect my S12 Grand Prix in Stützengrün (Germany) About 700kmh's from my place.
Stützengrün (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St%C3%BCtzengr%C3%BCn)

Tom Tom said it would take about 9hours drive with speed limitation of 90kmh
(http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/silvia%20s12GP/s12%20ophalen/P11403211600x1200.jpg)
Crossed through the whole of Germany with Patrol and trailer
(http://s440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/silvia%20s12GP/s12%20ophalen/P11404321600x1200.jpg)

At certain point even dumb dumb (tom tom) lost track
(http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/silvia%20s12GP/s12%20ophalen/P11403261600x1200.jpg)

After some hours we came in the direction off Dresden.

The road kept getting smaller, but the Nissan Patrol was still going strong
(http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/silvia%20s12GP/s12%20ophalen/P11403921600x1200.jpg)
In the end, after alot of time, random shit chat, shitty coffee and strong diesel we arrived in the small town.
Look around and there the S12 stood
(http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/silvia%20s12GP/s12%20ophalen/P11403951600x1200.jpg)
Instand "crush" again
(http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/silvia%20s12GP/s12%20ophalen/P11404021600x1200.jpg)
Took a quick peak below the car and the seller came with a half liter of beer.
Started the S12 GP for a moment to see how it runs, testdrive was a problem because of the snow. Lots of it.
Snow and RWD is fun, but not for testride.
Looked in and underneath the car, the previous owner had put new pistons and camshafts in it, according to the seller. So that will be checked.

Car stood still for more then 10 years (suspended)

Car on trailer and then we went into their shed with some typical stuff. Beer, naked posters of ladys, frozen beer and torched beer to unfreeze it.
We also did one beer there and then went home for a long way back.

It had became dark, and after the usefull pitstops, we arrived home.
Parked the car, did some S12 test driving and went home with the mazda 323 (my other car).

I was in bed at 4 and was totally broken.

Thursday 03th february 2011

Today I stood up early, fixed myself a garage for the S12 and went to see the S12 in daylight

Bad points

- paint especially on the fiberglass widefenders
- Ashtray missing, and the foglights front
- absorber right rear is leaking, needs replacement
- exhaust system is leaking near the hand brake cable
- blower only works on 4, so the blower resistence? needs replacement or solder

Good points

- tires with enough rubber
- almost no rust underneath
- as we could tell its well maintaned
- oil is good
- disks and pads are in very good nick
- radiator looks new

Nice score buddy!

You've got to love those road trips to go get far away/rare cars!

Was the passenger foot brace standards on european car, or on the GP in that matter?

Love the front corner lights, but the Euro tail lights are less nice than the USDM one, maybe someone over here will want to trade their for yours....

How can anyone not find the euro taillights by far the sexiest s12 taillights? The six packs do not even compared. The (usdm anyway) mk2 tails are sexier then the mk1 six packs but the euro tails still easily beat out the mk2 tails in the sexy department.

so this is WAY off topic, but:
you have a patrol correct? does it have the RD26? what do you know about modding that engine? and stuff that people have done to it? We had a huge argument on here about the performance of that particular engine. PM it to me if youd like.

Nice hatch btw! cant wait to see forward progress!!

You know I always wondered what a GP model would look like with a usdm SE kit on it.  I have one laying around if you're interested.

This is an awesome find my friend.  What are your plans of duty for this thing, DD or track car?

interesting. ur rear spoiler is a little different the the two styles we are used to seeing.  and ur rear diff has a cover that looks like a later model r200 lsd cover.  GPs came with lsd?  never heard of any S12 that did.  not even the JDM RS-X

idk if shortnose r200 covers fit our longnose or not.  i know the lsd will fit inside tho.  its possible that somebody installed lsd into it and replaced the cover to match... or just replaced the cover.  wouldnt hurt to pop the cover and inspect the diff.  prob needs new fluid and seal anyways :D

30/03/2011 Zeitronix AFR + gadgets

The last week I looked around for an AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) gauge. I PM-ed with some guys local that know alot of Nissans.

Finally decided to order some stuff from America. Why? With a wide-band I get a much better idea how my engine is running compared to a lambda-SR20 (narrow band). So I can see if the engine runs lean, too rich or good. The FJ20E  has no lambda control and with this AFR the engine is well controlled.

So I bought an AFR with gauge.

This has become a Zeitronix, more precisely the ZT-2 with plenty of adjustment / reading possibilities.
The plans are to place an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) gauge to be connected. This is something my S12 doesn't have yet. If you are going to tune it better to have a wideband and EGT sensor, this is the way you see what really happens. If you only have a wideband, you see only if the engine runs rich or lean. What you see is how hot or cold the exhaust and that is important, especially in turbo area. Keeping in mind the future plans, being a turbo on the FJ20, this is a logical choice.

I also have been thinking of a Apexi SAFC II.  Skipped this plan quickly because  the SAFC does not work on the current engine. This is because the FJ20E has no  0-5 volt throttle sensor. There is only open or closed and there are no intermediate steps.  The Apexi has been referred to the fridge. Not as long as into the freezer for the project should not be that long.

What are the plans?

short term [/ i] [/ b]
Compression test and spark plugs replaced (The Nissan S12 workshop manual book
BPRS7ES BPRS6ES or-11-11).
Check the fuel pump and fuel pressure.

Slightly less short term [/ i] [/ b]
If the Zeitronix  stuff arrives have that built in.

What do we monitor?
- Oil temperature
- Exhaust gas temperature
- Fuel pressure
- Water temperature
- AFR

And what have we finally bought?
• Zeitronix Zt-2 + LCD Display Bundle in Black
• Fluid Temperature Sensor (1/8th NPT) 2x
• 2x 1/8th NPT Bung
• Exhaust Gas Temperature Probe
• Pressure Sensor (150 PSI / 10 Bar)
• Oxygen Sensor Bung
• Zeitronix Decal

The ZT-2 has arrived. New tyres have been put on the rims (Falken ZIEX 912) and I have bought some new spark plugs.
I am looking for some new discs and pads. Probably hawk pads and OE replacement discs. Thanks for the links Nils (Spec)

The car has been taxated today, so this way its good insured in case something happens to it.
I took the car for a drive afterwards and Its handling better and better. The rear shocks (right one was leeking), front ball joints and tyres have been replaced.

I have also found a document from 1995 where the car has done 177.xxx KMs. So the last 15 years the car has been driven less than 10.000km.

The PU bushes I have ordered are on the way. Coilovers next year so plans are there.

The Zeitronics will probably be built in end of this month.

I went to a Nissan meeting today (yesterday/sunday) and took the car for a longer drive. Like 1 hour.
Got a good response to the car, even thumbs up from a biker on the freeway

Afterwards I went to a Nissan enthousiast who also has a silvia (S110) and we did a compression test on the engine. All 4 cylinders are around the 11.5 so thats all good. Only I wonder about the FJ20 rattle. I will post a video and a topic later.

Car is doing much better, new rear shocks and tyres do the S12 good.

A quick search on wiki told otherwise...

it's not related to the nissan sunny, but to the nissan cherry... it's the first nissan FWD car ever sold in North America (so it's a FF car).  It's using the famous a12 engine (same as the datsun 1200 and 120y engine)

Monday 27-04-2011

Had a busy weekend, with on monday some time to fix the car.

The FJ20 engine made a strange rattle. I was a bit worried because the common chain rattle is just during start up for a few seconds on a cold engine. In my case it was also during revving like 2000RPM and when starting the engine when it was warm. Decided to replace the chain tensioner for the mazda chain tensioner 395312500A

It was a bit of a puzzle but we managed to replace the tensioner with the modded mazda one.

Did some instalment of the Zeitronics ZT-2.
The fuel pressure is measured now, and the EGT sensor is connected.

Then did some maintence to the car.
- Tie-rods front replaced
- Brake pads front and rear
- Brake fluid refreshed
- LSD oil refreshed
- thermostat replaced
- Cooling system flush and new coolant
- Oil filter replaced

Afterwards decided to wash the car and take it for a spin. And took some pictures.

Look at the beading on the GP. Im getting hungry again.
There was no beading when I brought the car to my buddy.

Next thing to do is getting the car aligned? Dont know if this is the right word.

Anyhow short term to do list is
building in the rest of the ZT2 sensors
taking the car for a spin on the Nordschleife in Germany.

Long term
BC racing coils
FJ20E+T project
And everything what comes between

I update to many times?

Good news Bad news time

Good news
I received the spare GP kit so my buddy can do some replica's when he has time

Bad news :(
Was going to a dutch Nissan meeting this evening. Driving and noticed the engine was getting too warm. So put the blower on hot and 4 and hoped for the best... but soon I got the white (non catholic) smoke. So the car got towed away to a car shop and have to make arrangements to pick it up shortly. And then fix what ever damage there is.

Blog was delayed some time due to some problems on the S12sil site.
But in the end it all turns out fine.

There are many reasons as to why those of us who make up the Nissan S12 community would claim it is by far one of the best cars ever made. In the past year, it has not only been us of the S12 community who have appreciated them. The S12 has risen from a forgotten car to one that can almost be claimed to have a cult-like appeal with the amount of fans worldwide that have taken notice and fallen in love with it.

Yet, even among the many variations that Nissan released of the S12, there is one model that stands out from the rest. Literally, the zenith of styling and power, the only S12 model that could come close to that of the Grand Prix S12 would be the Full White S12. Moreover, what better way to start the re-introduction of S12Silvia.com’s blog than with a Grand Prix S12? This Grand Prix is clearly not your Sunday driver nor your stay in the carport but for a car show S12. It is owned by an individual who both understands and values the car for what it is by taking it out to the ever-fabled track the Nordschleife. A long time in the works and in waiting, we here at S12Silvia.com are very proud to offer this exclusive coverage of Mark van der Velden and his S12 Grand Prix (http://s12silvia.com/?page_id=1996)

Driver’s Blog: Mark van der Velden – part 1

As contemporary and local to our fellow S12 member Nils (http://s12silvia.com/?page_id=640), the one who started our Driver’s Blog series, we knew immediately that Mark would be one of those guys. Kind, knowledgeable, understanding, helpful, and the all-around great guy you would want to meet. Having talked with him for some time, we were quite anxious to feature him and after much effort on his part, Mark has assembled several pictures of his car and written a bit about both himself and his experiences for us. Just reading his story and browsing the pictures he had for us proved to us that there is not much better but an individual who truly values his vehicle.

Hey guys, my name is Mark, 28 years old and hail from the Netherlands. My first was a ’91 Nissan Sunny N14, which had a GA16DS. I drove that car for three years and enjoyed it to its fullest. While owning, I drove on the Nordschleife in Germany several times and even took it to the big Japanese Festival in the UK in both 2009 and 2010. After some time I began to want something faster and preferably RWD. After much effort I was able to obtain my Grand Prix S12 (FJ20E powered) after quite a trip.

I had owned my Sunny for three years and as mentioned loved it. After the years of building it and driving it on the track, I began to strip my N14 and sought to move on. I then found myself thinking about what I wanted next. Did I want to pay road tax for a track car that I only was able to drive six months out of the year? I knew I wanted to avoid paying road tax so I knew it had to be pre-1987.  I also preferred a RWD car so I began talking to a fellow Nissan enthusiast of the Dutch Nissan club. It happened that a friend of him owned a Grand Prix S12 with a swapped JDM FJ20ET.  He suggested that a Grand Prix S12 would be my best choice and advised me to look in Germany for a Grand Prix S12. Despite being available in Germany, even the Grand Prix S12 is a rare commodity there.

There were several reasons for my purchasing of the S12. In the Netherlands, cars that have been registered before January 1 1987 are not applicable to pay road taxes. I only have to pay car insurance (full insurance), which is quite cheap. In addition, I bought the S12 knowing its rarity as a Grand Prix, driving on a track, and for going to meets with the local Dutch Nissan club.

I really love the Grand Prix S12. I could have easily bought an S13 or a RHD S14 for the same amount or possibly less but the Grand Prix S12 is much more of a rare chassis. This is especially true in the Netherlands where there are not many S12s were sold. When I drive the Grand Prix, I constantly see people stare in confusion and many times, I get the thumbs up when cruising. I love getting recognition and helping to prove that the S12 is as great of a car as the S13 or S14.

With so much capability of the Grand Prix platform, the options are great. So many things I could do but for the short-term, not much. I have replaced some parts that required it and changed many of the fluids. As recent, I am looking to open the engine up and assess its current condition. At first, I wanted to strip the car in its entirety and have a cage welded in but I have fallen in love with the stock interior so for now refrain from doing so.

I currently plan to drive my Grand Prix on both the road and the track. I plan to continue to take it to the Nordschleife and to the Japanese Auto Extravaganza in the UK. I attended it in the past two years and am planning to go there again marking it, my third visit. This winter I plan to buy some BC racing coils, do an S13 front suspension conversion with appropriate S13 brakes. I have currently been preparing my winter progress as I have bought ES polyurethane bushes, S13 hugs, and S13 calipers.

I also need to acquire a set of bucket seats but that is not as easy a task as it may seem. I wish to have a set of bucket seats that fit the interior of the car even if it is ‘dated’ to the 80?s. If it becomes quite difficult to obtain a set bucket seats that fit my taste, I may have a set reupholstered to make them more fitting. Regarding the chassis itself, I want to add some stiffness to the car by way of both sway bars and strut bars. All this may be long-term depending on my funds. My brother is going to San Francisco and shortly after I will be following on a road trip along the west coast of the US.  Yes, my funds may be short by that time so if the BC racing coils have to wait then wait they will.  I have no problem with that for the car is not leaving me any time soon.

At this time in addition to assessing the motor’s health, I am looking to upgrade to an FJ20ET exhaust manifold for my future turbo plans.  I plan to run low boost at that time but who knows what happens after that.  Most assuredly, it will be fun.  Next year I want to take the car to other tracks participating at track days such as the Belgium circuits Spa Francorchamps and Zolder in addition to a Dutch track, Zandvoort.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Part Two of Mark’s blog. It covers his experiences on the Nordschleife in both the Sunny and his Grand Prix S12 along with some downloadable content about the Nordschleife.

Just come back from my buddy. The head has been taken off.. and it was not good.

Unfortunately it wasnt the head gasket. The head is cracked by 2 cylinders. I already contact a local guy that has a spare FJ20 head.

If it is al going to cost too much than the car is going for a soon winter sleep and be awakened next year. Full revision is too much money for me atm.

Coolant hose on the rear of the engine that is cracked.

Title: Re: Marks S12 Grand Prix

Time to give you guys an update.
There where two events I wanted to take the car to. The first one was the Nurmeet which is the biggest SX event on the Nordschleife (called often the Nurburgring) which is hosted by a German member from SXCE (Nils aka Spec). The other event was the biggest Japanese cars show in Europa. It is called Japanese Auto Extravaganza (aka JAE) and is held in the United Kingdom.

After reading this story you will know if i succeeded.

The FJ20 is not sold in massive amounts over here. S12's are not sold much too here in the Netherlands. So the search for parts was difficult, too say the least.
I needed a new FJ20 head because my old one was cracked in two places.

So I put out a request and a local Japanese scrapyard had a FJ20e head so I picked that one up and took it to the re-builder.

The FJ parts where hard to get here. I asked the local Nissan dealer ship what they could provide. Not much to be honest. They could only get me the rotor and some belts (like the fan belt etc).
The rest of the parts I had to get imitation. So I ordered Nipparts thermostat, Nipparts spark plug wires, spark plugs, got aftermarket and Gates hoses,

- New oil (Castrol Magnatec 10W40 )
- New coolant
- Head gasket for the FJ20
- spark plugs
- Spark plug wires
- coolant
- oil filter
- Belt (which had some small cracks so we also replaced)

I got some help from Colin (Draconis). I had found a OE head gasket set in the States. However the seller couldn't send outside the US so Colin offered his help and got me the head gasket set. Alot of thanks for that, Clublife FTW!!

Also put my paint skills at work
(http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/silvia%20s12GP/S12%20topic%2033/P1160881Medium-1.jpg)

Also I found on ebay Germany a seller that sold some OE FJ20 stuff. I got from him
- OE rotor
- OE distributor
- OE breech seal
- OE Belts

I also wanted to replace the water pump. However the dealer couldn't provide and the carshop had the wrong one which did not fit. Not that of a problem, I could still use the old one but wanted to replace it with a new one.

Anyhow
So when I had collected all the parts needed it was already too late too attend the Nurmeet with the S12. I went shotgun with my buddy in his Primera P11 GT and did one passenger lap that day.

Back to the FJ. The mechanic did not trust the way the pistons looked so we took off the oil sump cover. Took out the pistons and checked also the bearings.
They seemed to be ok, only the pistons had some stuff on them. So the mechanic cleaned them up, also he cleaned up the cylinders.

Well this is not going to fit ever...

Due to the overheating of the engine the inlet manifold got so hot that it had slightly deformed. To close the gap there had to be used some extra gasket stuff. After some time he got the engine running, only needed to have the valves set. I went to my local Nissan dealership which I think are good at what they do. They where supposed to set the valves properly. However there was a problem. The re-builder cut two valve stems they had put in from my old FJ20 head because the other where damaged. So the problem is that the shims are not available. Nissan only provides till something like 2.15 and needed is 2.82. So the solution was to have new shims made. In the meantime I went to JAE, without the S12. I did drive a little while in a S12 with CA18ET of a buddy of mine.
Totally made my day

I got back after JAE and got some better news. The head has to come off again and the valves have to be replaced. On top of that there are some more problems expected. The mechanic drove the car and when he shifted he said there is blue smoke out of the exhaust. Not a good sign. The engine is also using up some oil and I have the idea it is either leaking some coolant of eating my coolant. So the cylinders have to be checked and the engine needs a total rebuilt. Not cool at all.

So after this I got a little bit fed up with the whole S12. Luckily I got a road trip planned to the West Coast of the USA. I had a blast, met some of the US S12 owners (Colin, Andrew, Jason and Hung).
Even got a ride in Andrews car which is very low.
I also got the change to sit in the S12 formerly known as the heartbreaker S12. Henry sold the car to Hung.

Anyhow holidays don´t last, but when I was there I received a email of a German member of SXCE that he still has a FJ20 for sale. He doesn´t know if its running, he bought it from somebody else that wrecked an S12. For the money he asked for it I decided to take my changes. So the plans are to put the engine in beginning next year with a buddy of mine from the Dutch Nissanclub. Maybe some of the old members have heard of him. He is a member of tati motorsport, a bunch of guys that are into Japanese cars. One of them owns a S12 Grand Prix with FJ20ET which should be running again soon with a SR20DET harness implanted.
The engine came working out of the car, at least that is what the seller heard, no guaranties though. Fingers crossed it all works out fine. Picked this one up with a aftermarket manifold. I forgot the gearbox that was also in the deal but will go back later to get it. The seller was also a nice guy to meet, he wanted to put the FJ in a AE86 but sold the AE86.

Long story....

Saturday the 22th of October me and my buddy Jano went to collect the FJ20 from a German member of SXCE who lives in the Saarland.

Then I had to wait until a member of the Dutch Nissanclub (Kevin aka B12-power and known by some S12 guys from tati-motorsport with the red S12 Grand Prix FJ20ET) had time to swap the engine.
In the meanwhile there came another FJ20 for sale on Nissanboard (a german Nissan forum). So I bought that one too and it was shipped to me because it was in Dresden (near the Czech border)

And then it was time for the engine swap.
DAY 1
We started early in the morning. Making sure the engine was free from the body. Decided to also take out the gearbox because there was a seal that needed replacement. This has been on the to do list for quite some time so better do this also.
This was my first engine swap, fortunately Kevin has done this before. And also with S12 GP’s.
Radiator out, engine mounts loose, lots of hoses/ clips loose, en finally taken out the FJ20.
It was done quickly, gearbox disconnected from the FJ20. Seal replaced, easy fix when the gearbox is out of the car.

Old picture
On the swap engine we took away the sump. Welded a bung in the sump so in this way the oiltemp sensor can be mounted.
Exhaust manifold screwed off.
And then we to mount the gearbox back on the FJ. After a lot of fitting, refitting etc this was done. Clutch plate was still looking good so no need to replace that.
FJ mounted back in the GP. Reconnected everything en tried to fit the aftermarket manifold. Wouldn’t fit because it would hit both the bulkhead and the handlebar. So the OE manifold mounted back.

Refill the fluids and see if we got it started. Tried a lot of things but couldn’t get it to run. Because it was running late decided to go home and start again tomorrow.
Kevin decided to try some more
After 15 seconds it began to run on 4 cylinders…. Not bad for a engine that stood still for some years. The distributor looks shabby, so needs replacement.

DAY 2
Planning: Wire up things and connect the Zeitronics ZT2 further.
Off course the planning didn’t go as planned. All started good. Start and the engine was running sweet. Time for a test-drive. All was good until I revved the car. Engine started to shock alot, so back to the garage. We where literally standing in front of his house when the engine wouldn’t start again, so had to push the car. Got it running again and quickly put the car into the garage.
Rotor and distributor taken off again and compared with the distributor of the other engine. Rotor was different, from the “new” engine was higher and thicker.

This one comes from the Nissan dealer
(http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/nordschleife/S12%20Grand%20Prix/S12%20topic%2036/P1210883Medium.jpg)
And this one was one the “new” engine.
Fixed the rotor and mounted it. Start the engine… nothing…
Check ignition, check timing. After f*cking around for some time we saw that the rotor was not correctly mounted in position. So switched the spark plug wires. 1 became 4, 2 became 3 and vice versa. Start it and it was running sweet again.
Distributor and rotor taken out again and placed correctly, spark plug wires mounted correctly. Made a test drive and it was all good.
Connected the Zeitronics and decided that the controller will come in the place of the time clock. Good visibility and easy to mount.

I went to collect the GP and the starter engine died. So got towed a few meters, second gear and when doing around 20kms let the clutch come on.  Drove the car back home to the garage and noticed the coolant temp wasn´t correctly displayed. Saw the oil temp on the ZT2 so knew it was all good.
Things to fix.

-   Distributor

So I have replaced the starter, but still the car wouldnt start. So I have been trying to fix the problem but didn't had the time for it atm. So I towed the car this week to my buddy and he should take a look at it.
Problem had something to do with the spark plug wires and the coil. I switched one of the plug wires with the wire from the coil in the dizzy cap. Stupid mistake... hence the non running explained!

Yesterday we had a meeting I organised in Eindhoven. So perfect opportunity to drive the GP.

There where some things that caught my attention.
- in fifth gear on acceleration there is a "strange" noise. Hard to describe and maybe I am exaggerating but I dont trust it completely.
- at start of the engine there is a strange hard noise coming from the starter or perhaps the flywheel?
- the coolant temp gauge in my dash is living his own live. Driving it is almost on the left side (cold) and when I have the car running stationary it goes to the center. Probably the thermostat needs replacement.

To do list 2012

- solve problems above
- upgrade my radiator with a thicker alu rad. And see what is possible with the use of (slim) fans etc.
- replace the coolant hoses
- have the recaro's collected here and welded in
- deep dish steering wheel
- weld a strutbrace front
- normal maintenance
- drive the GP on the circuits

Winter 2012
- remove the subframe/chassis and have it all powdercoated or with PU paint  sprayed (apparently better/ more bulletproof then coating)
- Energy Suspension PU-bushes mounting
- coilover setup
- 5 lug converion
- brake upgrade

Circuitplans
- hit the Nordschleife in Germany a couple of times
- Japfest 2 Donnington Park (bought already 4 sessions of tracktime)
- if possible do some laps on the Hungaroring in Hungary. The F1 track which is also open a few days a year for trackdays.

Meetings
- the local Eindhoven meetings
- JAF (Japanese Auto Festival in the Netherlands)
- JAE (Japanese Auto Extravaganza in the UK)
- Nürmeet (German SX meeting near/on the Ring)

Some pics of my car at the meeting yesterday.

Today I had a carmeet with the Dutch Nissanclub. The car has been polished completely. The engine bay has been cleaned by myself and some help, with WD40 FTW> Interior has been cleaned with an extractor, and did a good job. Alot of brown stuff came out, but this was expected.

No pics before, but the result tells it all.

Not even close Jay. I do wonder if they fit the calipers? Better upgrade to 16 inch and get some decent brakes. Trackdays FTW!

Fits perfactly with just S13 brake parts (caliper, brake pad, brake disc, brake lines), S13 hub and S13 spindle. Rest of it is still S12 stuff.

Spotlight: The art of the S12
We of Wangan Warriors are all into everything regarding the Japanese automotive culture out here. That means we are no strangers to some of the most classic models and projects. Actually, we adore them! This beautiful Silvia S12 Grand Prix rolled of the lot in 1986. Twentysix years later it is owned by gearhead Mark van der Velden. His life is all about travelling to visit race circuits and drive them. He’s also a Nurburgring addict and thats where we did this photoshoot back in August at the annual nissan Silvia meeting in a small village near the famous Nürburgring.

Mark changed quite a bit on the Silvia since he imported it. In February 2011 he picked it up with a trailer in Stützengrun in Germany which is near the Czech border.

After a few months the engine blew up because of a coolant failure so Mark needed to fix that with an engineswap.

The FJ20e under the bonnet runs about 145 hp with 184,4 Nm of torque. In the interiour there are Recaro recliner seats with a 4 point QSP safety harness.

When I took a further look at the interior I was expecting a sport steering wheel as well but the Swiss edition S12 comes with special Grand Prix steering wheel, German ones just got the stock S12 steering wheel like these.

Because driving on a circuit is no joy without some handling modifications, Mark installed a BC racing coilover setup on his car. And on the front there is also a s13 strutbrace customized to fit the S12. There are also S13 facelift brakes with DS2500 brake pads mounted instead of the stock brakes.

Mark didn’t do anything fancy with new wheels but is running on OE Grand Prix Edition Gotti 3- piece rims. With 7j on the front and 8j at the back.

As you can see Mark is not scared to drive overseas. Some people would be paranoid after some big engine failure and would only go to places or meetings near their hometown in case anything happens. Mark is almost a regular at JAE.

The GP edition Silvia is quite exclusive. However the exact numbers today are unknown. Nissan Germany says that there are 4.400 sold in total. Most people doubt these are all Grand Prix’s, others say only 50.

Mark has been an active forummember of ours for a long time and off course he’s got one of our stickers on his ride. In fact it’s an honour to see it next to the Japan support sticker which were designed after the tsunami in 2011.

Another cool detail about this car is that even the models in 1986 had headlight rain wipers. Even the later Silvia models don’t have those, how cool is that!

Mark made me open my eyes for these classic Silvias and this will sure as hell not be the last feature we will share of a cool classic JDM car. I would also want to say to all the classic owners out there that if you read this, feel free to drop by our end of year meeting. We’re not only fond of performance and stance orientated cars but we love classics as well!!

I know for certain that Mark will visit some tracks in the future and if I spot him out there I will try to capture him! Thanks to Mark for his enthousiasm and activity on our forum. I had a lot of fun at the Silvia meeting in august! Hope you appreciate the spotlight blog.

Yeah the real one is more than just wide body panels molded in... special wheels, LEFT hand drive, and special documentation in the manual.

And the Swiss one has some extra's too. But that will all be revealed in an upcoming blog by Colin Masterson about the Champion edition and the Grand Prix edition.

Yes it is. Check the blogs on s12silvia.com

Do you have proof of the special documentation in the manuel of the S12 Grand Prix? Never heard about that and mine didnt have any special documentation when I bought it.

I noticed some pictures arent working anymore. So here is a summary of last years track time with the S12.

Long due update.

The original idea was to put the tracktime stuff into a blog but Colin is way to busy to finish that atm so we decided to put it in the project thread instead.

2012: tracktime of Marks S12 Grand Prix in bird's eye view

Last year I have been to two tracks. On the 8th of July 2012 I drove the S12 on Donington national circuit in the United Kingdom and I have been four times to the Nürburgring/Nordschleife in Germany.

Japfest 2 8th of July 2012
Donington Park
The weekend of the 8th of July me and a buddy have been to the UK for a Japanese car show with tracktime, called Japfest 2. This is in the midlands of England and held at a historic racetrack, Donington Park. We arrived a couple off days before the event to make it a decent holiday trip. We visited the local pub quite occasionally, because it was raining a lot.

We decided to go and visit the track, it was not open but we were still able to get a glimpse of the circuit and feel the atmosphere. Donington national circuit is not as long as the more famous Nordschleife, but it also has height differences and it looks like a fun circuit, more about that later.

As a regular visitor to JAE (http://s12silvia.com/community/index.php?/blog/3/entry-159-jae-2012-the-s12s/) for the past four years I have been used to the British Japanese car scene. It was nice to see old friends again, and make new. Japfest is different from JAE, it is more track oriented. There are still show and shine cars, but a lot more cars that are there just to race. Thats what I am talking about, I met some of my buds from a UK based group, Cable tie racing and I have met them also this year at the ring. Cool bunch of guys, with the same interest so that bonded very well.

More about Donington national circuit.
At Japfest I drove the short version of the race track, the Donington national circuit which is 1.957 miles. I drove in the intermediate class, which is for the more serious track tools. I knew I would get overtaken a lot with my 145 bhp on a stock car but I rather drive in this class then with tupperware drivers where I have to watch out for people that cant drive. I did 4 sessions at Japfest 2, drove 33 laps so that was quite a good value for money. Loved some parts of the track especially the right left Goddards and the Old Hairpin. My favorite is Coppice. A hard blind right corner. You see it on the video I made at 2.53.
A strange thing is due to the close presence of the airport you see planes taking off at the horizon. Very cool.

As said above, Donington race track has a bit of height difference, nice corners and some fast corners. It is a fun track to drive on. However it was Japfest and not trackday only so between the sessions in the intermediate section I returned back to the paddock where the S12 stood between my friends of the Nissan Primera Owners Club. During those time it happened a lot that people came to me for a chat about the car on track or that they had a S12 before. There was even one guy that came to check the VIN if this was originally equipped with a FJ20 (noticeable by the codename RUS in the VIN plate). They liked it in particularly to see such an old car in such a good condition lapping the track.
I drove at Japfest on a totally stock car, the BC racing coilovers I had ordered where in back order for two weeks so next year I expect to put down some better times.

And to finish it off two video's

It is a fun track to drive, I have only driven my car on the Nordschleife but had plans to visit other tracks. Next year I will go to some other circuits as well. England has a lot of small circuits, but there are some in a few hours away from my place that are also quite well known. I think the most know apart from the Nordschleife is Spa-Francorchamps with the famous and the notorious bend eau rouge.

From next years plans back to another famous and also notorious track. .
The Nordschleife / Nurburgring
One of the most famous tracks in the world. A track with some dark clouds overneath it, nearly bankrupt due to mismanagement. However I am confident the Ring will survive, with or without the latest additions.

A track with a lot of history and a mindblowing experience every lap you drive there.
Last year I have driven as much as in 2011. That is 11 laps. In contrary to last year I didn’t do this in one morning. There were a lot of track closures, I went four times last year. The last time I was with Colin, and I am sure he will mention it in his blog regarding his eurotrip.

So back to my experiences. I have driven the Ring only with a stock car until the last two times I have been. My last three laps where with a modified suspension. BC racing BR-RA 8kg front spring rate and 5kg rear spring rate coilovers. I must say this is quite the improvement. The car is a lot stiffer now and it handles so much better. For next year there are the plans to finally polybush the subframe and do some handling mods, but most important is to visit more tracks and do more track time at the Nordschleife.

Here are some pictures made of the 12
First some comparison pictures of my car with stock suspension and the bc coilovers

Here you have a good example of the height difference. Which is 300 meters from lowest point to highest point.

Sometimes it is very crowded on the ring, as you can see on this picture.

It is all about having fun, and you have the most fun among friends. The understand me and they understand my passion, drive the tracks around the world. My best weekends there are the ones with my mates. It is the combination of going shotgun with a buddy on a lap, doing a barbeque with some beers besides the track or just take a walk on the track when it is closed. This mixture makes it something to look out for every time again.

So looking forward to next year, the plan is to attend more different Euro tracks and I can say that the Trip has started last July at Donington Park.

Hope you guys enjoyed it, and remember if you ever go there.
Don't forget to

Have fun with friends

Post Merge
Annual  update  :P

Last year I had a hose leak again. So I decided to take off all the hoses and have them all remade. Which cost some time but eventually I found an UK company (JSperformance http://www.jsperformance.co.uk ) that is able to reproduce the correct form of the hoses. They are from silicon and are a bit thicker that original. Which fits perfectly most of the hoses. Only the two hoses under the inlet manifold are too big in outer diameter and they cannot be fit properly. If you want more info reg. the hoses contact them, I don't have more info.

Some pictures

New silicon hoses

After this was fixed the car was ready to be driven again.

I had custom floor mats made, but wasnt happy with them so version 2 arrived

And don't be fooled of the picture of the S15. They come without brand/club name on them.

I also bought some new rims, work emotion XD9 front 9x18 et20 and rear 10x18 et18 but sold them because I believe they are too big on an S12 and not easy to be fitted with some decent rubber unless in 4x4 mode.

After this I brought the car to a buddy of mine that welded a new floor pan in. The stock one has a big bump in it and that gives problems with aftermarket seats. They cannot be mounted low enough.

Seat is much lower now and much better for track use.

Then I went twice to the Nurburgring/ Nordschleife with the S12
First time was during the Nuermeet (A SXCE international car meet weekend at the Nurburgring). This was my second time and had alot of fun again. Although it was pretty cold in the Eifel at night.
I did only 2 laps on sunday and it was insanely crowded at the track, which can be seen on the picture below.

After this I also went for a track session at the local track Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The track is so wide compared to the ring.
Unfortunately no pics or footage of this. Hopefully next time.

To do list for next year
- new clutch
- revised gearbox (which is at my buddy atm)
- floor pan adaption version 2
- cross/ bar welded between the rear struts for mounting points of the 4point camlocks and extra chassis improvement
- polybush the subframe
- adjustment for toe and camber on the rear subframe
- mount the setrab oil cooler

Optional
- bigger brakes (perhaps r33 GTR front)
- 5 lug
- new wheels
- semi slicks
- respray

There will be one small update this year.

thats pretty badass. yeah i dont like the floorpan design on the s12 verymuch.. the awkward hump near the trans tunnel is strange..lol

but i have to say i liked the silver smaller rims a lot more than the larger work rims.. the larger ones make the car kinda look goofy but that just my humble opinion.. looks killer man.. your making me really want my s12 to be running right now..haha

Last time it appeared like the S12 was running on 3 cylinders, so we checked the spark plugs. They where fastened way too much and only came loose with alot of effort. Unfortunately the ceramic on one off the plugs was damaged and was laying in the bottom off the spark plug hole, so next problem. The spark plug wasnt completely screwed out of the hole so we could get the ceramic out with a compressor. We put in new plugs and it was running alot better instantly.

Also mounted a deepdish LTEC steering wheel and because I have driven on circuit Zandvoort recently I have also placed a sticker of that track on the back of the windshield.

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/1398239_228796640614904_731507988_o.jpg)(https://scontent-a-ams.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/998315_228057490688819_1175367583_n.jpg)

Like I already said there was coming a small update.  I have a few pictures and a webpage where you can see more of it.
The story begins like this. I saw a scale model of a local Supra that looked alot like the real deal.

I wanted a scale model of my S12 for some time now, and it had to be a replica of my Grand Prix S12. Only problem is those arent made. So I asked Kris if he could make it for me and he liked the idea.

It is in Dutch but google translate can help and the pictures are pretty much self explanatory.

To top it all off here are a few pictures of last sunday when I attended the Wangan Warriors meet which is a Jap car only meet which attended 400+ cars. Not bad for some guys that have a forum and do this for the hobby.

For now the S12 is in wintersleep mode, waiting in the garage for next years plans.

Last weekend I went to my welder to have the mounting of the drivers seat redone. I wasnt happy with it and neither was he. The way it is done now it is more solid and easier to adjust.
Here are some pictures of the result. I still need to grind it down a bit and give it some paint.

And a before and after picture

The FJ gearbox has seen better times so I bought a FJ box for cheap. And because the FJ was also cheap I also bought that one.
Instantly lowered the mazda :P

Also ordered a new clutch and pressure plate. This will be replaced together with the gearbox.
I want the friction plate/clutch plate to have a better lining so it can handle the track abuse better.

I also bought a Nismo sport muffler which will be mounted together with a 2.5inch stainless steel custom exhaust system together with a DR30 FJ20 N/A exhaust manifold I have had laying around here for two years. That will need some serious remodelling but nothing my welder cannot fix!

Saturday we plan to mount the setrab oil cooler and while we are at it change the oil. Some time ago I bought a refurbished S14 front brake setup which hasnt done 1000 km. We will fit the S14 front brakes to see how big a spacer I need to make the brakes fit in the 15inch Gotti's.

With all this done we should be sorted for Japfest UK. So hopefully see you there.

Cheers mate. It still is on the road. Just need some minor problems fixed.

Tomorrow we are going to test fit the S14 brakes in the front to see what size spacers I need with the Gotti rims. And hopefully mount the oil cooler and do an oil change while we at it.
Then next week I bring the car to a workshop to have the gearbox changed and also the clutch replaced.
I have picked up the clutch plate today with a different material mounted on it. The workshop owner is also a nordschleife fan. He has driven over 500 laps in the last years. He used to tell me stories of earlier times when a yearcard on the ring was 1100 gulden (thats aprox 500euro) in comparison to now when its like 1700 euro. Inflation right.. :(

Time for a trip down memory lane.
In 2011 my S12 would be featured in Youngtimer Magazine. A dutch magazine about cars of the seventies, eighties and nineties. Unfortunately my engine blew up and I had alot of problems afterwards with the rebuild. In July of 2012 the feature did happen. There are some mistakes in the article but overall I like the feature.

Here is a scan of the article. It is in Dutch but I have translated it as well as I could.

Introduction
29-year-old Mark van der Velden is a Nippon-freak at heart when it comes to cars. Proven by the many pictures in his room. Rightly proud he is of his Nissan Silvia S12 Grand Prix, a special limited edition, which spoils the sports driver with generous power and good driveability, while the lover of art is operated with beautiful Japanese engineering. Although the Brabander is particularly careful with his white coupe Youngtimer Magazine was allowed to take it for a ride.

Article
Nissan brings the Silvia S12 Grand Prix in 1983 to the market. The big difference with the normal S12 is in the body shape. The standard looks slender, graceful and pruning tight. The GP has the contrast as if it’s on steroids and it has a wide body kit that looks like a sumo wrestler. The wide costume fits the coupe exceptionally well. Even when standing still, the car demands respect. Of course the body is not the only difference. Especially under the hood there is a technique of a very different caliber. There is a double overhead cam with a displacement of two liters, with the codename FJ20E. This machine is good for 145 hp. Indeed, not much, partly because it looks suggests at least 200hp+. The block, however, offers an unprecedented potential for tuning and can easily double the power. Mark has enough future plans; a FJ20ET turbo and manifolds are already impatiently waiting on the shelf.

Van der Velden lost his heart to cars from the Land of the Rising Sun. His first car was a Nissan sunny N14 1600.

Page 23
Article
I like to take my car out on some laps around the Nordschleife in Germany. For this purpose I had modified the sunny. GTI brakes, an improved chassis, all perfect for street and track use. Driving pleasure guaranteed, and all three years, without excessive costs. Another proof that the technique of the Japanese is hard to beat. The bodywork was less, I sold the N14 in part-out.

End of 2010, it is due time for something else. The quest begins on the internet. Mark has a few requirements. The car must be rare, preferably RWD and road tax-free.
In Germany Mark discovers his current Nissan near the Czech border. "Not exactly next door, but for something special you have to put more effort in it to obtain it.. After several emails with questions, answers and photos it was November 2010 and the buy was agreed. After a small deposit the car was taken of the auction site and could stay there for a few months. In February 2011, I picked the GP up. "

Writing in top photo: Nissan dealers can provide almost nothing for these cars

Article
Such a silvia is not a modest appearance. The extended fenders recall those of the Audi Quattro. The Quattro ones are made of metal and are integrated with the bodywork. Nissan used polyester parts that widens the body on both sides 7 cm. No show, but necessary because of the front 7" and 8" wide wheels in the rear. The screens are in one piece, with the rear riveted. Nissan has tried as much as possible to conceal them, but that was not exactly successful. On the hood the 'power bulge' displays proudly. In combination with the higher FJ20 engine this is a sheer necessity. The folding headlights feature washers and wipers powered by the same engines as the lights move. Very special are the guards for the headlight lenses. Protection against crossing wild? The special footrest for your passenger is also a rarity in street cars.
Mark wants to keep his Silvia S12 Grand Prix for a long period and plans a respray in the future. Striving is to keep the car look as original as possible on the outside. It can be difficult to get all the original stickers, but if it is impossible to get the originals, they can always be reproduced.

A nissan silvia, with a FJ20E engine. The FJ-blocks were built in the eighties and have a deep motorsport history. The FJ24 is a 2340 cc engine, which was used in the Nissan 240RS rally car. The FJ20 is the normal 1990cc production version, which we find among others in the DR30 Skyline and Silvia S12. The cast-iron block carries an aluminum head with two chain driven camshafts. All together an almost indestructible piece of art, countless racing and

Numbers with pictures:
1. In the eighties the sunroof is inevitable, this Silvia is not an exception.
2. The FJ20 overhead cam is a fine example of classic motor construction. It is well known in the tuning world that the engine harbours great potential in power and moderately displays such ability.
3. All GP's are on a composed 15" Gotti wheels, front 7" wide and the rear 8 ". It is typical that a Japanese manufacturer opts for French wheels!

Page 26
rally successes have proven it.
The white Silvia GP has left the factory in May 1985 and was first licensed in January 1986. At the time of purchase the km-counter stood at 185,000. There are now 9,000 added. Mark found a MOT report from 1995 where the car had at that time a milage of 177,025 kilometers. In the ten years before there is thus only 8000 km driven!
Unfortunately there is no service history. A thorough maintenance is vital. Besides the standard items Mark replaced all the fluids. The brake pads were replaced, the thermostat, the track rods and a large handful of other parts. After all this the RDW (the Dutch civil service for road traffic) doesn’t give this thick Japanese car the slightest obstacle in the way. Since February 2011, the S12 is on Dutch yellow license plates.

The enormous fun can now begin! Every ride puts a big smile on his face. Until ..Mark  "It was not Friday the thirteenth, but Friday the eighth. The 8th of July 2011 to be exact, "I'll never forget it. Big white clouds of smoke rose from all the cracks and crevices of the hood! Shit, a burst in a coolant hose .. The engine got incredible hot and the cylinder head was damaged, cracked in two places to be more precise.’
Mark says that he quickly found a replacement head at a nearby Japanese car junkyard. The gaskets needed to be ordered from the U.S., but that went smoothly. "Nissan dealers can provide almost nothing for these cars, so you have to rely on countries such as the USA, Australia and England. There is still enough FJ20 supply, which gives peace of mind.
After rebuilding the block, stuff got worse. The company that had overhauled the cylinder head cut off a valve stem. With two valves just too much .. With the result that the valves are no longer able to provide in the normal way. "
Mark is now really fed up with this, "I decided to buy a completely different block, which I found in Germany. It was not expensive, so I dared to risk it. Together with a friend I did the swap in three days. The engine ran perfectly straight away, one problem less. Revision of the transmission is still on the priority list, which has some odd sounds. The starter or the starter gear is not good, but it does still run'’.

Blue text in the middle of the page
"With everything you can notice that the car is designed for much more power."

Page 27
The car does drive fantastic! It is quite heavy with its 1375 kg. Everything feels remarkably tight and solid. The interior has a typical angular eighties atmosphere. The vast amount of plastic is characteristic of Japanese-made cars of that era. The many shades of blue that really come at you from every angle underline this experience even further. These seats offer more lateral support as you would expect at first sight. The steering wheel looks like it came straight from a Bluebird. This super sporty coupe deserved a more sportier interior!
The five-speed shifts completely free of play and the clutch performs its work as on the day of delivery. The suspension should have been a tad stiffer, but this Nissan doesn’t roll too much on its longitudinal axis. The car responds very directly, which is a big advantage on the circuit.

The classic sixteen valve behaves like a true sports machine and is pretty tame at lower RPM’s. However when you floor the gas pedal, from roughly 4000 rpm there comes a wonderful explosion of power. The exhaust will treat you to a wonderful deep rumble that animates you to rev it over and over again. You notice on everything that the vehicle is capable of much more power. The braking system is also there to cope, it has a big overcapacity in its current power.

Mark uses his S12 for hobby, although certainly it is not an impractical car. 'For everyday use I own a mazda 323 hatchback from 1987. My grandparents bought that car brand new. The car has just had its run in period with only 80.000 km’s on the speedometer.
Part of the hobby includes visiting events. High on the priority agenda are Japanese car events like Japfest 2 Donington Park in England and the Japanese Auto Extravaganza, also on the other side of the North Sea. "This is one of the largest events for Japanese cars in Europe. The S12 GP is extremely rare, but in such major British festivals he is one of the many rare cars! But hey, that is the charm, you can enjoy watching and comparing. "

Blue piece center of the page
The market.
We are quickly done with it, because the stock of Silvia's S12 (April 1983 - September 1988) is very limited. Of the few cars offered the state varies. A decrepit copy can be obtained for 700 euro’s. Beautifully maintained in standard condition are on a tight four grand. The Grand Prix with its wide body was never sold in the Netherlands. They can be found In Germany, but they are very rare. Switzerland and Austria also belonged to the elect and there is rarely a GP to find. If you can found one, count on about 5,000 Swiss Francs. Production numbers are not known. Wikipedia talks about 50 units, but that's probably too little. Elsewhere you can read about 4,400 units, of which 3.483 with FJ20e engine. That will probably sit closer to the truth.
Its hard to find parts through Nissan dealerships in the Netherlands. The Internet helps you sort needed items, most of the time you need to import items from the USA, England or Australia. Prices are often surprisingly pleasant. Also used parts are easy to find on the world wide web.

Numbers with the pictures
1. The extended fenders remind of the Audi quattro. Headlight protectors to protect from crossing wild?
2. Apart from the low seating position the interior differs not that much of the interior of a brave Bluebird from the same period.
3. The seats look not really sporty, but are excellent, with adequate lateral support.
4. The large rear window provides access to a decent boot. Typically eighties, lots of black plastic.

Later this week I will post an update reg. Japfest UK Castle Combe which I attended two weeks ago and had some fun on track with the 12.

Event report Japfest 2014: UK Castle Combe

The week before the event I checked the car, gave it some maintance and mounted the setrab oil cooler with a 85degree temp sensor and a mocal sandwichplate.
The weekend of 10-12th of May I went to the UK with a friend of mine. Tracktime was bought several months before.
We decided to depart on friday morning. From Dover it still is a 285kilometer/ 3hours drive.
I had decided to spend the friday evening at my mate Taz's place at the English Riviera in a place near Torquay. So the trip was a bit longer then necessary. We also passed Stonehedge, however because we are Dutch we refuse to pay 20 pounds to see some old prehistoric bricks

After a long trip with leaving at 7.30 in the morning we arrived at Taz's place at 18h local time. We did some beers and decided to get some sleep before the clock would ring at 3.30 in the morning. An hour later we were on road to the premeet near Castle Combe circuit and at 7.30 we drove off to the event with a bunch of primera's. As usual there was a nice queue to get in. However this time it was much worse and it took us 2.5hour to get in. Some dickhead decided to crash his honda and left the event in an ambulance.

Finally arriving at the event we had to hurry to get to the sound check (Db test) and a mandatory briefing. After alot of stressing finally back in the car and onto the track. Unfortunately there fell quite some rain on the track which resulted in a very wet and slippery tarmac, duly noted!

Castle Combe is aprox 30 kilometers from Bristol and originated as an airfield, just like alot of other English tracks. Sinds the 1950's there are races held. It is a fast track, but it is also bumpy. Which makes it more difficult to brake properly. During the briefing the instructor tells that this is the track with the hightest accidents ratio in the country. 25% of all UK track accidents happens on the Combe.

The first session was on a fairly wet track. Advantage of this is that you learn to know your car very well. Lots of corrections needed especially in corners, and sometimes it just goes wrong. Seems a good reason to do a drift day soon. Top Gear decided to warm us with their presence. James May was driving in the same session. I found it peculiar that such a strange car was on a Japanese car event. He was "driving" a green peugeot convertible.

Second session went better. Tarmac was dryer and the speed also went up. Had a lovely drive and loads of fun.

Here are some pics of the event.

Soon I will have the decibels checked because I think it will be too loud. We will fit a freeflow silencer between it somewhere.
Current setup is a 2.5inch stainless steel exhaust line with a nismo muffler.

Also made a key holder

Last friday I did a compression test with my friend Chris.

We already thought the FJ was not in a very good condition. And we were right.

(http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/sunny1600/S12%20GP%20fora/compilatiecompressietesttekst-1.jpg) (http://s440.photobucket.com/user/sunny1600/media/S12%20GP%20fora/compilatiecompressietesttekst-1.jpg.html)

The spark plugs seem to look fine. Only the spark from cylinder 1 is less black.

Soon we will test it on the dyno to see how many horses it has still left.

Last friday I had a Simons silencer and a small restricted pipe welded in. The smaller diameter piping should help against the noise. Piece of metal from 2.25 inch extended to 2.5 inch and had that welded in after the silencer.
It seems the Fj pulls better again, however that might just be a mental thing.

The exhaust noise is less now.

http://youtu.be/41hOoYs_zuw

And how it was without the silencer.
http://youtu.be/PU3pHXp3wfE

With the silencer I have to watch out with tresholds. Already scraped the silencer a couple of times. Only problem is that it cannot really be higher mounted. The original spot is not available because of the floor pan modification.

Soon mount the S14 front brakes and the car will be ready for the Nurmeet.

Last weekend 12-14th of september I have been to the annual Nurmeet organised by SXCE.org (German silvia club). It was the most crowded one I have been to yet. Friday morning I installed the tent and at two we where already in Adenau enjoying a hamburger with fries at Bistro Cockpit (prev. Hannes). The atmosphere at Cockpit it not like it used to be but things change...

Friday evening we had a bbq and on saturday a tour through the Eiffel area. Very lovely environment. Sunday I did two laps on the ring. First lap it was foggy, very beautiful to see the ring in a different way.
Sunday evening around 9 I was back home. Exhausted but that needs to happen at such a weekender.

Some pics and other stuff.

At the Nurmeet.

Some vids.

Partial first lap of the day. Gopro quit half way.

Later I was able to close the file with the gopro Sos function.

Filmed on low quality on a budget cam. Found out later it was not filmed on the desired 1080p mode.

The weekend was awesome again. Next year I hope  to go more times.

Yesterday I had the 12 dynoed by Jonne from Sky Engineering. A Dutch tuning company nearby that specializes in skylines.

The result was less then expected. I expected around 130 bhp.... As soon as there is a budget for it there needs to be a turboed FJ under the hood.

The engine is running way too rich. And there came a lot of black smoke out the exhaust.

Today a friend of mine made some pics of the Grand Prix.
Here is a preview

Bought some small upgrades

Solid steering rack made by David Carroll. Explanation of the use. Passenger side solid mount whether RHD or LHD. The stock driver's side mount basically just has to keep the rack from twisting once one of these is installed. It locks the rack down and keeps it from moving side to side. Stock it's a really soft and squishy rubber bushing that doesn't do much when compared to the driver's side. With stock mounts the passenger side does probably 80% of the lateral locating of the rack but the rubber still flexes and lets the rack move some. The solid passenger side mount eliminates all of that movement. These are machined from black Delrin and eliminate ALL lateral movement of the steering rack under turning/cornering loads. Even if your stock rack mounts are in good condition you will be amazed at how much more direct the steering is with one of these installed. A T/C Kit and one of these solid mounts are the first two mods I would do to any S12.

Tension/Compression rod bearing kit made by David Carroll. T/C Kit: I have produced a UHMW / aluminum ball & socket assembly to replace the forward rubber bushing in 510s & Zs for at least 15 years. The 'T/C Kit' as it's known is usually the first handling modification done to any of these cars. It's a cheap, easy way to make a major difference in the handling of the car, especially under heavy braking. What it does is eliminate ALL fore-aft movement of the front wheel under braking and cornering loads. This is done by replacing the forward rubber bushing with a mechanical joint. The rear rubber bushing does not need to be replaced unless it is cracked and at risk of falling out. This is because all the rear bushing does is apply pre-load to the T/C Kit's ball & socket to keep it from rattling. The rear bushing is NEVER compressed further except while braking in reverse, and it handles that just fine.

Keep in mind that the stock two rearward rubber bushings are retained with a T/C Kit. All they really do is preload the ball & socket joint but they do have to be intact enough that they don't fall out! They are compressed slightly when braking in reverse, but otherwise they're only job is keeping tension on the ball & socket. If your bushings are crumbling you should get two new rubber bushings and replace them when you install the T/C Kit. They are cheap from Nissan. You should NOT use polyurethane bushings with the T/C Kit as they are too stiff.

Last month I went for a drive with my friend Stefan. He also has an S12.

I am waiting on the pictures made by RoyZweers. You will see them pop up later.

This weekend I have the last ride of the year planned for the S12. Afterwards the S12 Grand Prix will be in the garage for the next three months looking like this.

Few upgrades to the S12 Grand Prix, only mounted a solid steering rack made by experimental engineering/ David Caroll. Off course the thread was worn because of some rusty bolt. New thread, new oil and filter and that was it. I still have the S14 4 pot brakes that I should really install on the car, as should the PU bushes from Energy suspension I still have collecting dust.
Not many upgrades, but I have been cruising with the GP. With the Dutch SXOC I went to Japfest at Zandvoort Circuit. I took a German friend from the sxce.org with me and he had a great time.

Some awesome pics

Just like last year we decided to go to Japfest 1 Castle Combe in the UK. My buddy Mike and I decided to go a day sooner so we had an extra day to chill at the coast in the Torquay area at my mates Taz place. So we decided to leave really early in the Thursday morning...........
To get in a huge traffic jam at the E34 even before Antwerp. So we decided we went a bit offroading leaving the highway and find ourselves another way.

Around 18h UK time we arrived at my friend Taz which I know from the NPOC. He lives near Torquay at the English coast. Stunning environment, lovely roads and we had great weather. What else can you wish for??? Right! Beers!! And we had a lot off those.

Saturdaymornings early departure took us to Castle Combe. We did a premeet with the Primera OC (NPOC). Did some tracktime which was great. I had bought 3 sessions. This year it was devastating warm (well for UK standards that is :P ), so it was a 1000 times better than last year when it was raining cats and dogs. Unfortunately my second sessions was over way to soon due to a red flag. 35 pounds for 5 minutes of driving time.. ouchhh.. expensive session. An EVO had his rear bumper in flames and a honda decided to be a lawn mower. Plus there was an extensive amount of debris on the track. I did found out it is a really fast track, something you notice better when pushing harder on the track.

After the event we drove to a hotel nearby Castle Combe. Decided to celebrate a good weekender with a shitload of beers and steak. In the end I did drive 1800 km’s that weekend and also the FJ20 decided to use 2 liters of oil. :P

Planned short term fun time with the S12 Grand Prix.

27 Juni Tracktime at Zandvoort Circuit
http://vrijrijden.nl/

4th and 5th of July to the Nordschleife / Nurburgring

16th of August tracktime at Rockingham during Japfest 2
http://www.japfest2.co.uk/

If its possible I would also like to go to Zolder Circuit for some laps. Not many updates but the S12 is used for what it was built. Driving it with a big smile, preferably on a track off choice.

And a small video of me at Castle Combe to Finish off.

That two-tone blue s12 looks really purdy. Oh, and I guess your Blue-Smoke Unicorn doesn't look half bad either.

I'm jealous that you've got tracks to play around on.

Did I see a blue Turd in there!?

I only wish my S12 looked that good.
Maybe someday, I'll find a good one. I don't think I'll put the effort into the body of mine now.
Kinda like my own body...

Last winter the S12 Grand Prix has been stripped and rebuild cosmetically. The widebody panels have been removed to fix the always present rust on the rear arches (typical GP problem). The right rear panel was the worst and needed to have a new  wheel arch welded in.

After the painting. The car has been painted in two steps. First the whole of the car in white. And a few weeks later the accents in black.

Furthermore fenderbraces have been made and also a fibreglass hoodscoop.
Also fitted are a JDM RS-X grill and an SE fibreglass spoiler to replace the foam ducktail sponge.

All hollow spaces and the underside of the car has been tectyled.

I also put on 25mm spacers on all fours. This is needed for the S14 brakes combined with the Gotti wheels. It also makes the car look better with the extra 25mm each side. Soon the S14 brakes and yellowstuff pads wil be mounted.

After the rebuild in march/april I went to Japfest Silverstone (national layout) and Japfest 2 Donington Park (national layout). Damn Donington is a nice track to drive. Last time I was there was in 2012.

I had some problems with my exhaust studs. One was missing and two broken so I had some exhaust gasses coming out near the 4th cylinder. Engine removed and fitted some helicoils as the the thread was missing. Also I had a cracked manifold. Thankfully I have some spare so that was a quick fix.

Very nice. Shame photobucket killed all the older photos though.

Look for the photobucket embedded fix for chrome and add it. It will make all the photobucket pictures magically reappear. Its great.

Or add me on facebook mainly because I don't post to forums that much anymore.
