Title: Would you buy this SR20DET? Need opinions or reality checks please...
Post by: 8SixS12 on 07:44:07 AM / 26-Jan-12
I found this guy with a redtop sr but he says it knocks.   I think maybe it has a spun rod bearing.  Think I should pick it up?  I think I can get it for around $600 with tranny and ECM, no wire harness though.  I can get rebuild parts for cost at work.   Think it's worth it?

yea if its a spun bearing hopefully the block isnt damaged.. thats the main worry.
I bought my sr with a spun bearing the guy i bought it from told me once he heard it start ticking he turned it off and towed it home.

if nothing else is missing other than the harness then 500 would be a decent price if its an S13 motor. SR harness shouldn't be a problem to find. And make sure to get the block checked!

SR S12s are sick.

But you really can't check the block before you buy, can you? Besides external cracks.

Yeah.  That's what I was thinking too.  I wasn't going to buy without inspecting the oil pan for metal shavings.  I just needed to see if I was just beeing to anxious about getting my 12 back on the road.   I already have a c trans waiting for a bellhousing swap.  I just need a drive shaft from a c trans car for the hybrid setup.  I might just go ahead and do forged internals if the block and bores are within spec.

I will most definately get the block checked.   Thanks guys for the fast reply.  I'm going to check out this motor tomorrow morning.  I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Well, I looked at the motor and it needs work like I thought.  I took the upper and lower pans off to inspect the pistons, etc.  I didn't get a chance to take off the the caps to see what kind of damage the spun bearing had done because at this point I was ready to walk away.  Then I thought for the right price I could part it out if there was a problem after I get the head off.  So I offered the guy 300 and he took it!

Can't argue it myself. And I hate SR's only a little bit less than VG, which I hate just a little bit less than CA20E's.

I started removing accessories today so I can degrease and pressure wash it before I take the head off.  After that, the block is off to the machine shop!

Just an update on the motor.  I have the SR at the machine shop getting bored .20 over.  I also had the head decked along with a valve job.  I've got CP pistons and Manley rods going in after I get it back.  The coolest part about the whole thing is that I sold most of my KA swap parts and recovered every penny I paid for the motor and then some!  It's about time to start my build thread soon.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I found a harness by asking around at work one of my customers had one at his shop.  Picked it up for $100 bucks with MAF and all.
BTW, I got the SR back form the machine shop this past Tuesday and it looks great.  Just waiting on some of the more important bits to come in before I start the build.

Its a much better design... doesnt get blocked as easy from a dented oil pan.

Wow thanks for the tip.  I had no idea the designs were so different.  I think that little upgrade is well worth the trouble.  I've read that it bolts up to a different part of the girdle.  It's like having a little cheap insurance.  Although I probably won't use the stock oil pan, the increased pressure would'nt hurt.

It bolts right up no problem. And they are cheap

Sounds like I'll be getting one then.  Cheap and better?  Sounds like a win-win to me.
