Title: Restoration project #3
Post by: S12_Lifer on 10:02:29 PM / 02-May-15
Picked this MK1 a few months ago for $1000.  Body looks good, engine runs fine and interior is in pretty good shape.  I plan to start the restoration this summer and give to my son as his graduation gift.  Will send pictures during restoration.

I'll most likely swap them out with my favorite XXR wheels and end up selling them.  Let me know if you want them for old time sake.

I need to find a couple of those steels for the S12 I have. It has 3, but two are mismatched generic steels. Either those or Turbo snowflakes for this car.

I thought I would update you folks on my restoration project#3.  I am 15 months behind schedule as this project is my sons graduation gift.  He graduated last year so I thought I would finally start this project after hearing for weeks and months, "is it done yet, did you start yet?"

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27371_zpsqg49lhby.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27371_zpsqg49lhby.jpg.html)

Ready to pull the CA20e which runs great.  I plan to have this motor rebuilt to it's former glory and have it back at 105hp (or was it 99)!

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27391_zpsyaclgmre.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27391_zpsyaclgmre.jpg.html)

All hooked up.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27421_zpsyi8bfazu.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27421_zpsyi8bfazu.jpg.html)

No problems extracting the motor/transmission.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27431_zpsdisfpaz7.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27431_zpsdisfpaz7.jpg.html)

Mission accomplished!

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27451_zpsk1yxqgo2.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27451_zpsk1yxqgo2.jpg.html)

Steam cleaning the engine bay.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27461_zpsyexxdwmc.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27461_zpsyexxdwmc.jpg.html)

Drying out in the California sun.  That's my secret weapon next to my sons car.  Big plans for that MK1.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27541_zpsnczahrwx.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27541_zpsnczahrwx.jpg.html)

Completed stripping the front.  Next weekend, gut the interior, remove all glass, doors and hatch.  I'm hoping the car will be at the body shop by the end of the month.  I'll keep you all posted.

What is it with cats and builds?

It's amazing how much rust you will find when stripping these cars.  This is the driver side (rear window).

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27641_zpswaniy7h6.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27641_zpswaniy7h6.jpg.html)

No surprise here.  Passenger side (rear window)

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27661_zpszuajvpwt.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27661_zpszuajvpwt.jpg.html)

This is rust located under the spoiler.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27671_zpsh7sqxcfd.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27671_zpsh7sqxcfd.jpg.html)

Once I removed the spoiler, I was in for a shock.  There would be no way I would tell my body shop guy to repair this.  So................

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_27701_zpswmjniowe.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_27701_zpswmjniowe.jpg.html)

I pulled another hatch from my inventory.  This hatch is rust free and the class has already been removed.  I still have to remove the dash, carpet and a few more things in the engine bay.  Hoping to get her to the body shop this week.

You're one helluva dad, pops! Where is it that you are working on this car? Is that a public rental space in the pictures?

I do all my major work on a military base at the Auto Hobby Shop (retired military).  Disassembling/assembling the body is done in my carport.

Aside from the $1k purchase price what's your budget for this Mk 1?
Title: Re: Restoration project #3
Post by: S12_Lifer on 06:36:43 PM / 07-Sep-16
I have an unlimited budget when restoring these cars.  However, I do not foresee going over $4000 for this project.

Kinda surprised it has that much rust if it was a cali car its whole life. Usually the west coast climate overall isn't that hard on them. You got the average tuners wet dream for the restoration...military base auto shop for the major work AND unlimited budget? Should turn out very nice when it is done! Found it strange with all the work your putting into it your just planning on keeping the ca20. I'd figure you'd at least go ka24 since even that is a huge improvement over the ca20.

I new this comment was coming regarding the CA20.  I want to try to keep it original and legal (smog) as possible just as my son does.   As you know, the CA20 is a great motor for road trips and reliability.  He's not a drifter and really appreciates the originality of the car.  He has driven my S12 (SR20DET) many times and could have requested any engine but, he is perfectly content with the CA20.  He did grow up riding in them.  My next restoration project will be a different story.  Stay tuned.

Indeed the ca20 question was coming. At least it is outta the way now haha. Totally solid reasoning for keeping it though. The ca20 is a great motor aside from its lack of horsepower. I always forget about the smog laws being so stringent in cali too. You guys have the most nazi emission and inspection laws in the nation unfortunately.

Checked on the car last week.  Coming along just fine.  Should be ready in another two or three weeks.  Until the mean time, I am assembling the CA20e in my backyard.  I took a few pictures when the block and head were at the machine shop.  OEM parts are still available for this motor.

As of today, car is still not ready.  Should be painted next week.  Until the mean time, I have been working on the extra rear suspension parts that I have.  That way when the car is ready, all I have to do is bolt them on and tighten to specs.

Absolutely!  You can ship your car to San Diego on December 16 for the meet on the 17th.  That way your drive time will only be 14 hours.  We can do whatever you want to your S12.

Jay, looks fantastic! I admire your hard work, your son is so lucky to have this project that will be his prize one day. Thanks for documenting all this effort, it is inspiring (and embarrassing that I am not getting into mine as much!)

Thanks guys  for the positive feedback.  November may be a slow month for this project as I will be visiting family in Hawaii next week and taking another week off for Thanksgiving.  During that time, I'll most likely take my S12 on a road trip to Vegas to "stretch her legs" and to possibly visit the S12 Vegas boys.  Thanksgiving in San Diego is boring, especially when I have to visit the in-laws.

I had a little time to stop by the paint shop to check on the car.  Looks like their done with the bodywork and priming.  They will start painting next week.  Here are a few pictures.

Body and paint is finally done!  At first, I was surprised with the color.  I was expecting a color close to Nissan's "Hot Red."  Instead, my son decided on "Claret Mica" from a Lexus RX 350.  They did a great job and totally satisfied with their work  I plan to bring restoration project #4 (Blue Bandit) in the next couple of months.

Finally back home for assembly.

I agree Kelso840.  This is the best part of any restoration project........putting everything back together with the best parts I have.  This is going to be one sweet ride that will be joining me on road trips and car shows.

I have to admit, this project has not been a priority for me during the last few months.  I'm sure some of you know how time consuming it is to maintain more than one S12.  Here are the latest pictures of my slow but steady progress.

I thought I would work ahead and take care of the front strut assemblies since I have many extra pairs.  That way all I have to do is remove the old and bolt on the new.  As always, this project will have new KYB mounts and struts.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_33451_zpsg4zlzoku.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_33451_zpsg4zlzoku.jpg.html)

This was the closest product I could find for strut fluid.  I'm not sure if it helps but I figure it won't hurt to help keep things cool inside.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_33461_zps3jv2xv6w.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_33461_zps3jv2xv6w.jpg.html)

Pressing the strut at least 10 times as recommended by KYB to help reduce noise and excess gas.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_33471_zpst1oydjk7.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_33471_zpst1oydjk7.jpg.html)

Notice the Gland packing does not sit flush.  This has always been an eye sore but, I have been using this strut  for over 15 years and has never given me any problems.

This is far as I can go until I get these strut assemblies bolted on to the car.

I was going to replace the fuel pump but this pump is fine.  These pumps rarely go out.

What specifically did you use for the rear springs, and where can I buy them, I have a set of megan coilovers but the rear springs did not come with adjustable collars/seats. This would work perfect for me.

This thing is gonna belong in the Nissan car museum after its done. Seems to be about as close to "factory brand new" as you can get for a 30 year old car. I'd truly fear for its life on public roadways after this kinda restoration. Amazing effort and work lifer.

I don't see why you need to use gloves on an engine as clean as this. ...perhaps to keep the engine sterile?

Final height adjustment will be done once I drop the motor.  Later this week I plan to do the front suspension and replace steering rack.  I am hoping to drop the motor by the end of this month.  Stay tuned!

Hey Kelso840, this project should have been completed a long time ago.  My son is just to busy with his job and cannot really help me.  He just wants to just drive S12's to the shows and meets.  Guess I don't blame him.  Besides, he knows how passionate I am when restoring these cars.  Want to come over and help?

Hmmmm.... It's 11 degrees this morning, and I am trying to make inroads with the fuel handling folks at a base in San Diego. Be right there!

Cool!  I'm off at 12 today and have a lift reserved at 12:30.  By the way, it's currently 70 degree's right now.  Gotta love that Cali weather!  We can drive the 12's to the beach and have a margarita!

Thanks Cajun1guy!  Hey SuperWhitePlatinum, I probably will start repairing the SE in April.  You may like what you see when I'm done.  Full restoration will probably start in a couple of years.

Updated:  02/05/18 - I finally had the chance to drop the motor.  Here are the latest pics.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_3809_zpshh8hvl2p.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_3809_zpshh8hvl2p.jpg.html)

Just loaded the motor and other parts on to my truck.  Off to the Auto Hobby Shop.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_3810_zpstpsoeqqd.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_3810_zpstpsoeqqd.jpg.html)

Off loaded the motor late in the evening.

I been waiting a long time for this moment.  A couple of buddies assisting me in dropping the motor.

After a few minutes of wiggling the motor in place, I bolted her on to the motor mounts.

The last part to install on the bottom of the car was the front sway bar.  This weekend I will tackle the air intake, radiator, hoses and vacuum lines and of course, the harness.  Hopefully she will crank over by Sunday.  Stay tuned!

Installed all remaining hoses.  Started her up for the first time, nothing.  Found out I had a bad coil.  Replaced both with the resistors (should have replaced them the first time).  Finally cranked over but idling very rough.  Pulled the dizzy, set number one cylinder TDC and installed dizzy.  Still rough idling.  Called my buddy (Gus) and he says it's the timing belt.  Pulled entire intake and discovered the timing belt was off 180 degree's!  Started her up, idling was a little better but still a little rough.  Lastly, replaced the MAF.  Started her up, bingo!  She was purring like a new CA20e!  Finally, I can drive her home and continue the work in my carport.

I thought I would take a picture of the part number for this Toyota item in case any of you are looking to do the same for your lip kits.

That's it for now.  I plan to finish installing the lip kit this weekend or next.  This will be the last item for the outside of the car.  Next phase is to beautify the engine bay by replacing parts with chrome parts.  Lastly, the interior.  Stay tuned!

Stellar work as always, Jaymie.

If you sourced new hoodstop/rubber pads I'd sure like to know where you got them. I've looked all over and come up empty.

Updated 07/25/18 - I finally got her running the way I want as well as completing everything on the outside and engine bay.  The inside is still gutted but I think this project will be completed  by the time JCCS will be in town (September 15).  Here are the latest pictures.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_3884_zpsjphwdyhk.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_3884_zpsjphwdyhk.jpg.html)

Using white-out to mark where I will be drilling.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_3885_zpsk2zt10qf.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_3885_zpsk2zt10qf.jpg.html)

Drilling the holes for the side skirts.

I put sealant under the washer to help prevent corrosion.  I also used a little brush to add some primer where I had drilled.

Just finished the engine bay last weekend.  The motor is strong and runs great!  I did advance the timing by 3 degree's.  Acceleration is instant and seems to react very quickly.  I must admit, one bad-ass CA20e!

This S12 will be participating in the S12 meet this Saturday.  I'm sure she will be the highlight of the meet.  My son is finally off from work and he will be proudly posing (and driving) in front of his nearly restored 12.

Stay tuned for final completion.  S12 for life!

Yeah, just casually slip in the polished air intake and valve cover without saying a word.

Updated 11/18/18:  Progress is still very slow with this project.  I've been extremely busy with my job and have been doing more travelling.  Just got back from Costa Rica (Pura Vida)!

I like to use styrofoam boards to fill in the space for the spare tire.  This prevents the carpet from sagging into the wheel well.  I do not carry any spares or jacks in any of my 12's.  So far, no flats!

I'm going with the Momo steering wheel.

Installing a little Dynamat around the door speaker.

Purchased this carpet online.  The molding fits great but there is still a lot of cutting to do.

I am hoping to have this project completed by the end of next month.  Stay tuned!

Updated 12/30/18:  I started to receive interior parts from my upholstery guy last week.  Here are the latest pics.

Headliner and other pieces to hold the headliner in place.

Notice the coat hanger hooks for the rear handles.  Extremely hard to find.

Double checking to make sure all three air bags work for the driver side.  These seats came from an 84 XE notch that I have been using as a parts car.  To my amazement, the bags still holds air after all these years.  You can purchase a kit online with motor but the kit only comes with one airbag,  I'm glad I did not have to go that route.  As most of you know, these electric seats are very rare.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_4133_zps2xe66xob.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_4133_zps2xe66xob.jpg.html)

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_4132_zpsrxqryrxb.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_4132_zpsrxqryrxb.jpg.html)

My assumption was this connector was for the electric seat.  I knew it was not for the driver side seat belt since I already connected that.  Unfortunately, this connector did not fit the seat connector so I assumed this is for those models with the infamous "talking Betty" on/off switch.  I will just wire the seat to a power source and ground.

(http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j350/jgonzoS12/IMG_4136_zpsqmgv4fai.jpg) (http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/jgonzoS12/media/IMG_4136_zpsqmgv4fai.jpg.html)

I'm just waiting for the back seats and rear side panels to complete the interior.  The last step, a high-end stereo system.  Stay tuned!

Wow, thats super clean. Nice work.

First time it occurred to me the the CA2 has no quench. Was always to busy hanging turbo on them to be concerned with that. Most hemis dont have them. Alot of newer ones do though.

So those are what the hydro lifters look like. Sometimes I wish mine had those as Im entirely to lazy to adjust mine every 6000mi. Honestly I dont think I ever adjusted them on the current s12. Happens when one plans a swap I suppose -  excuse for neglect.
