HI Im new to club s12 And a new owner of a1985 200sx turbo. I have a problem when I first go down the road it seems to be fine but when it gets hot it backfires under the hood and misses the only way to make it stop is to go full trottle and the turbo makes a very high wine sound and the turbo gets so hot that it melts stuff under the hood but it is barley boosting it is in the middle of the boost gauge in between the -5 and the +5 and want move. It goes to the shop tuesday the 6 and I dont know whats wrong please help.

If the turbo is getting that hot, it may not be getting a good oil flow.  It could also be that the turbo is in need of a rebuild, but Iââ,¬â,,¢d check the oil lines going to it first and make sure its flowing? How many miles are on your car? And has the oil been changed recently? Itââ,¬â,,¢s possible that dirty oil that hasnââ,¬â,,¢t been changed in too long is clogging the turbos oil lines.

If the boost is low, it could be the turbo is damaged, or has been damaged as a result of extended ware without proper cooling.  As difficult as it is, you may have to pull the thing out and/or rebuild it.

Itââ,¬â,,¢s obvious that the backfiring is probably being caused by the turbo under boosting though.  The engine is more then likely mixing to much fuel into the engine because the turbo would normally be boosting more.  Iââ,¬â,,¢m sure the shop will get to the bottom of it.  Whatever the issue is, I doubt itââ,¬â,,¢ll be pretty.

check the coupler that connects from the compressor housing outlet to the cross over pipe.  If there is a big enough boost leak there....it will idle and cruise fine...but when you start to boost, it won\'t boost much past 0, the turbo will have a loud whine, and it will buck and kick when trying to do so......all symptoms you describe.  If the stock orange silicone coupler is on there......they\'re crap, and split easily.  You may have to take off the cross over pipe to visually see a split in it.......but my bets are, this is your problem.
Same thing has happened to me several times over the years.....until I got wise and started using a different silicone coupler.

The car has been sitting for about 9years with out being started so as soon as I got the car I changed the oil & filter pluse spark plugs plug wires desribiter cap and rotor button and the car has 150,000 miles own it.If I buy a new turbo do you think it will fix the problem? And how can I tell if oil is making it to the turbo?

before you waste money on a new turbo.....check the old one to see if it\'s still good.....because I think your problem is what I mentioned above.  If not, thats a good place to start.
To check the turbo.....take off the accordian intake pipe  from between the air flow meter, and turbo compressor inlet.....and reach in and see if the compressor wheel spins freely.....and also check for shaft play by grasping the nut in the center of the wheel.....and push and pull it.  There shouldn\'t be any movt.  Also move it side to side.  A little play is normal.

I did that the other day because I had to replace the turbo gasket it did not have much play but I noticed when I spun it that it would spin for a little bit but then it would stop suddenly and I would aply more force than normal to get it going again. And what you said about the cupler will that cause it to get paint melting hot?

Keith

well...........if the wheel is binding when you spin it, then it sounds like your turbo IS on it\'s last leg.

How can I make sure the turbo is getting oil to it.?

drift_addict

Make sure the lines are clear and you can take apart the turbo itself to insure that it is getting lubrication. Sounds like the turbo is about to go kaputt on you for sure, I would just look for a new one or maybe...oh I dunno, slap a T25 on there! ;)

Indecisive

pfft to your T25 idea...

you can take off the oil return hose that hooks to the oil pan....it should be lined with a bit of oil

Student #1, chuckling: Yeah, and plus, it's yellow, so that makes it faster, too.

What kind of ecu what

Cavi Mike

What? The Electronic Control Unit. There\'s nothing more to it. Not an ECU brace, ECU line, ECU bearing or ECU grease, just ECU. It needs an ECU. And you\'re going to, or already did, blow your seals in your turbo from trying to drive it in this condition. Basically, after you replace your ECU, it will run fine but blow some blue smoke.

If you didn\'t know what an ECU is, you shouldn\'t be thinking about swapping a turbo on anything. Stick around here for a little while longer and get more familiarized with your car before doing any major modifications.
