Here forth it comes

Alright professors in case you don\'t remember what this device does it modifies the signal of the MAF sensor in order to either lean out or richen the A/F mixture.

That\'s all it does.... However the neat part is... it\'s adjustable on the fly, you can do different corrections at different points in the rev range. so on and so on.

Anyway start by buying one:

It\'s around 300. I got this one almost a year ago for about 276 on ebay. Brand new.

Now the way the SAFC does it\'s job is by being connected to the computer. Here is a picture labeling where each wire needs to be connected to in order for the SAFC-2 to work.

Gray is tapped into the TPS.... stock S12\'s do not have TPS\'s (they have ONE switch) so this can be left untapped.

The yellow is the SAFC\'s MAF output. This wire will eventually be connected (inline not spliced) to the ECU\'s MAF input. It will give the computer the \"corrected\" MAF signal

Ground 1 is connected to the ECU\'s (yes the ECU\'s) ground wire and should be spliced into the wire farther away from the ECU after.......

Ground 2 is connected to the same wire a little bit closer to the ECU compared to the splice for ground 1

The green wire is the RPM signal. Obviously you will splice into this wire from the ECU\'s RPM signal input.

The white wire is the SAFC\'s MAF sensor input. This wire will connected to the MAF sensor output.

when you cut the ECU\'s MAF input you will connect the MAF portion to this wire and the ECU part to the yellow wire get it?

The Blue and purple wires are the MAP (manifold aboslute pressure sensor) sensor input and outputs for the SAFC. I would use on my car but not on the S12. It doesn\'t use a MAP sensor for metering fuel. So obviously don\'t do anything with them.

I don\'t have the instructions anymore and I forget what the orange one is for but I made this picture when I had them so I\'d say the orange isn\'t used either.

The purple wire will be spliced into the Knock sensor input wire.

and finally the red wire is the 12v power source which you will also get from the ECU\'s power wire.

\"but johnny What the **** am I supposed to do with all these wire if don\'t know where on the back of the computer to splice and hook them up to?\"

Well you lazy pieces of poo.... get the Big ****ing book out and find out yourself...

Nah j/k I have the answer to that too.

The ECU pin-out courtesy of one_equals_two and mr.bob.

Now I do have a picture of it wired in but it doesn\'t show you the colors of the wires you need to splice and tap anyway so just follow the pinout I showed you and you\'ll be fine.

One it\'s all wired in you\'re good to....

Setup the SAFC.

First you will have to tell the SAFC how many cylinders the car has, what type of metering system the car what metering sensor the car has and what type of TPS the car has.

So here\'s how you do it.

Turn the key to the on position DO NOT START THE CAR IT I WON\'T RUN ANYWAY.

Then the SAFC should start dancing around

use the stick to scroll to the etc. menu and press the button

Then go to car select

This screen is what you will see

It most likely won\'t be set like the picture. So using the pad set the # of cylinders to 4 then go over and set the \"thr\" (which is throttle in case you couldn\'t figure it out) to ****..... no seriously set it to ** this is the setting you use for the stock TPS which you didn\'t tap into because you don\'t have one.

Go back to the etc. menu by pressing left on the stick. Then go to sensor type

You will see this screen

continue by pressing into the Hot-wire selection

You will see this screen

Except for the fact that 01\'s will be the default and you will see them in place of the 04\'s. This is the sensor setting you need. 04 is for the the CA18DET sensor which we have. Now if you put different numbers in the SAFC will convert the sensor\'s voltage range you currently have (say a 300zx TT sensor) into what the computer is progammed for allowing you to use a different MAF sensor (so long as it\'s measuring capacity is more than the stock one othewise the car won\'t run right anyway) without having to hack into the computer\'s ROM and rewrite it.

Once you\'ve done this the car is ready to drive. However you should set the knock sensor correction while you\'re here.

Go ahead and start the vehicle now go back to main menu and go to the setting\'s menu. In there scroll to knock set

now while the car is running of course raise the engine to around 1500 RPM then press right on the stick. This tells the SAFC that this raw knock sensor output is \"normal\"

Then raise the engine RPM to 3000 RPM and do the same thing.

The result should be around this but the numeric values might be different

Setup is complete, install larger injectors, tune with a wide band, and proceed   to lay waste to your froerr..... I mean rear tires..

Beautiful.... *sigh* If only I could still keep it....

are you sure ground 1 goes before ground 2?

I just got a SAFC(not SAFCII so it may be different..dunno)

but the manual specifically says that you MUST splice in the brown ground in front of the black ground..unless your front and my front are backwards...

in the apexi manual, it says the brown wire goes closest to the ECU and the black wire goes further from the ecu.

Ahhh well that\'s good I\'ll just edit it.

Awesome write up dude.  But I still can\'t for the life of me how one ground should before another...they are both connected to a central point, and if it were a perfect world they would have the same resistance...just seems weird to me...:dontknow:

I don\'t get it either Alex, but the manual explicitly states NOT to get them mixed up or you may do some serious harm to the car

doesn\'t say why or anything.

Steve

So now that its fitted, What is the actual effect?    The reason I\'m asking is that over in the UK at the moment normal 95ron Unleaded petrol is nearly Ã,£1 a litre and is set to go up quite alot.    If you are using your et on say 1bar for everyday use with a Safc enriching the mixture, are we likely to see quite alot less mileage on tank of Fuel? Any views would be helpful as my et is my everyday vehicle for a 100 mile trip to work which could work out quite Expensive!

Many sellers on ebay for example tells you to specify car make and model before purchasing an SAFC-II.
What car should i order for since i doubt they make them for the 200sx S12?
Its not the topspeed that matters, its how fast you get there.

okay, I wired mine up using that ecu pinout and what not...

but when I turned the car on..the safc didn\'t start up and turn on..it\'s just blank....

what\'s odd as well is that hte car starts up fine and drives fine as well.

anybody know what\'s going on?

I checked the wiring tons of times, and it\'s right, unless i\'m a complete douche and wired it all in backwards/upside down or something.

I bought this used, so I dunno if it\'s hooped or not...I\'m trying to rule that possibility out....how would check?

would it be a bad idea to hook the safc up to another power source(accesory wire, or directly to a power source?

hey try taking off the back panel to make sure the wiring harness didnt get pulled from the board.. this happened to me

ugh...okay...after help from dan and some from randy...(took me forever to find the damn wiring diagram for the ECU(EFI control unit in the electrical section and ECCS control unit in the EF & EC section)...and about a half hour tracing the diagram...

we realized that the pinout that was posted was looking at the BACK of the connector..not the front....*pukes*.....I feel sick now...

so all my connections were wrong lol  ...luckly there was no power running through this thing so hopefully it won\'t be fried...and it didn\'t fry anything...

I\'ll try again tomorrow....damnit.....

baah..damnit....I feel SOO stupid.....lol

i\'m pretty sure that\'s what I did.  I \"flipped\" the image and checked the wiring in the FSM, and it makes sense...

the way I had it..its like the ground was going to the knock sensor..or something..and like the MAF wasn\'t going anywhere...and the IG power was hooked up to the MAF...lol

damn man... that sucks... I had a feeling that\'s what you did though. That\'s why I said to check the wiring again.

Of course that didn\'t work. Sorry I couldn\'t help you better

edit: Guys I don\'t know what dan or any of the mods (if they\'re able too) have done to the settings on the board but I can\'t even edit the post to make sure someone becuase there\'s too many images in it.

I can\'t split up that post effectively now! WTH guys throw me a bone here!

Also to eddy: the SAFC doesn\'t get connected to the TPS becuase the TPS is not a potentiometer type. In fact it only has one switch. The idle contact, to tell the computer when the throttle is closed.

I Hate Ricers

If the SAFC-II allows you to select and manipulate different AFMs, can you convert to a suitable \"Hot Wire\" type AFM ( you know, the kind with out the air flow vane) from a series five 2nd gen RX-7 or something similar to reduce intake resistance?

All, Does anyone have the complete pinout from the ECU?  I have a CA18ET Project andthe harness we got does notcompletely match so we are having to splice wires.  If anyone has a FSM for a 1985 & 1986 scanned or electronic it would help tremendously!

i installed an safc neo today..but the RPM is off by a little bit at low RPM and as i rev it  higher the RPM gets more thrown off....anyone know y?
