okay kids, the vg30e FAQ section is in need of more content.

Lets make a list of what the vg30e Frequently Asked Questions are.  If you see a question here you know the answer to, make a new thread and let us know, or point us in the direction of an old thread with the right info.  We'll review it, and if it's good enough, we'll throw it into the FAQ.  I'll add questions to the list below as the questions come in, and cross them off as we get more answers.  I'll start things off with an easy one.

"Why is my SE so sluggish around the corners" (because they're heavy and the turbo S12s are faster and lighter :D ahha j/k)

I don't know much about the VG30 stuff, so you guys are going to have to spearhead this one more than the other two sections, but I'll offer as much help as I can.

ill throw down whats on my mind.

Excellent Info Page: "Engloid" has a vast knowledge of the VG30. Search the Z31 forums. you'll find quite a bit!! Here's a page. You'll find it a good idea to lurk about the Z31 forums. they have alot we can learn!

Where is the oil filter? (theres always a new guy): Under the passenger side exhaust manifold. It is somewhat difficult to access until you've done it a few times. Secondly, its best to do it cool, and take the extra time draining the oil, otherwise your asking for forearm burns.

What is the best Ignition Timing? This largely depends on you as the driver, but the consensus is around 25* bdtc. Stock is 20*.

Where can i get a replacement radiator? Just like any other part for the SE, you will be hard pressed to find a new one. Your best bet is to take it to a radiator shop and have your old one re-cored. Theres always Summit Racing for aftermarket radiators, but still no direct fit. you must make it work.

How can i increase the performance of my VG30E? Believe it or not, there are multiple internal upgrades you can do to your VG30E. The place to get the power from, is the Heads.
  • A good Port n' Polish at your local machine shop will do wonders for your performance.
  • Camshafts: MSA,  Courtesy Nissan of Texas, and even Jim Wolf Technology make cams. You may see them listed for a Z31 300zx. this is because we have the same engine!
  • Valves, lifters, rockers, Etc: Ebay is always a nice cheap way out, just keep your eyes open. Courtesy Nissan sells lifters, J.W.T. carries Valve Springs. And your local parts store can order you new valves, or you can just have them machined.
  • Spark Plug/Ignition Wires: Nopi carries a good deal of wires for out engine. Sparkplugs.com carries some wires as well. Theres always the local parts store, but usually they only carry oober expensive, OE wires. no fun!
  • Spark Plugs: Most have had good success with some sort of NGK plug. You can get these at most any online parts store, or even your local parts store. Bosch seem to work, but there have been instances if lesser performance.
  • Ignition Coil: Most any type of Coil will work. I use an MSD blaster II, but others use the MSD Blaster SS. Its a personal choice, not much difference for us to be concerned with. We do have a How-To.
...more later..

Is this along the lines of what you're looking for?

actually the stock nissan ignition is very good an upgraded coil is not really needed. also i have an entire vg30e turbo set up (how to) in the works with pics

demonic s12

anyone want to contribute to a vg swap into a coupe how to?

that would be nice?

maybe we should sticky something about how difficult other VG swaps are in these cars. you see a new thread every week about "will it fit?" these threads are mostly useless to the forum until someone makes one that says "it will fit!!!"

that seems to be a very frequently asked question.

#1 port and polishing the head won't do jack if anything you'll notice such little difference that it won't be worth the money. you should only port and polish when your HP goal or your engine is over 400hp at the wheels, as the head and intake tract start to become very very restrictive at this point openning up the air flow would make a HUGE difference in the air the air flows into the engine.

#2 af far as valve springs go the one's from the L series motor work perfectly on the VG.

#3 i honestly wouldn't go with anything except NGK wire unless your expricancing nitrous misfires or boost misfires. NGK's are very good wires top quailty (SP)

#4 as far as the ignition coil goes, the Z31 coil are very very good. better then MSD here take a look dyno runs to prove it

http://az-zbum.com/dyno.results.airfilter.na.shtml
and for the boosted VG's

# 5 spark plug gapping is very important. the longer the gap the more enegy it takes to ignite the plug but the more stronger the plug ignites, the smaller the gap the more consistent the spark is and the less energy it takes to ignite the plug but the ignition isn't as powerful. as far as choice in gapping, thats up to you to choose.

#6 z31 parts make very good cams and their adjustable pretty good deal too.

Russ' Dyno sheet

Russ just hit 220WHP and 203 torque at the wheels on a VG30E

This Might be true for the Z31 coil, I thought we shared the coil but who knows. Anyways I noticed a huge difference in low end power and when I added my MSD Blaster II, then I added in my msd 6al. From that I got a Rev limiter Plus It made it so I could gap my plugs all the way to .45-.50 and yes he has dyno sheets but every car is different. All I know is for 30$ for the blaster II was money well spent on MY car

I can't seem to find it with search...but the factory shop manual for the VG would be quite nice. That along with as many random .pdfs of wiring diagrams, etc, etc, etc.

good luck attempting to find the factory service manual. I scored mine from ebay years back. last year I gave it to a CS12 member (as i didnt have an S12 anymore). two weeks later, he wrecked it, and gave up.

From this point on, try to keep discussion to the VG section. if you feel you have good, solid info (or corrections to any info), feel free to write it up.

I did a port match/mild polish and added a set of Experimental Engineering headers, 2.5" all the way back...  Did wonders for me.  YMMV
