Hey

Ive been reading lately and I was pretty set on a CA18det but now that I have been reading that it wont handle my 300whp goal reliably im thinking about maybe swapping a SR20det.

What are you thoughts on these swaps.

I want to know....

Will the CA handle 300whp and if not what do I need?...pistons, rods, etc..

How hard is it to swap in a SR20?

Which engine weighs more? (ca is iron block right?)

Overall whats the better engine swap?

Thanks alot

Evan

I've seen that JUN Automotive built a CA18DET to handle up to 500+ HP.  I believe changing out the Pistons, Rods, etc.

Cast-Iron is heavier... stronger too.

Indecisive

the SR is actually the heavier motor.

Aluminum block, but it doesn't have the same strength, so they have to beef it up.  Which in the end makes it heavier than the iron block ca18det.

From what I've read, a ca18det won't be reliable past 300whp like you said, but they can be built up to take the power.

300whp is a lot of power in a car like the S12.  Are you absolutely hell bent on making over 300whp?

the SR and CA are the same in difficulty with the swap, or supposedly.

As far as which one is the better engine...that's highly debated. The question should be, which engine is the better choice for your needs?

To answer that, you've gotta tell us what you want to do.  Power goals, purpose of the car, budget, etc...

I would like to build this car to be a drifter/track car...my horsepower goals are 300whp but I guess im not totally set on that much. So maybe 250whp. Budget is 4000 after I buy the motor.

Thanks alot.

Asking questions is good.
Asking questions that have been asked at least twice in recent memory is bad.
In general CA vs SR threads are one of my least favourite topics on any forum due to the general flaming, poor/wrong information and so on expressed in them and the fact that in the end you are comparing motors that cost different ammounts, displace different capacities and so on.

which one would be able to take abuse more often as in constant redlining between shifts?

which motor is the weakest compared to the other (as in internal wise)?

and finally which motor is harder to find parts for if something goes wrong like head gaskets, oil pump pistons, con rods oil pan. for what ever reason if something goes wrong i wanna be able to access parts easy.

I'm thinking of going CA18DET. since the ca20e project is gonna eat my pocket.
