Is My Front Swaybar Bent? *pics*
« on: 09:22:54 AM / 11-Sep-06 »
years ago i nailed a nasty curb in the ice and just noticed that my front sway bar looks bent. what do you think?

last winter i installed some canuck springs to lower it.  here is a pic of the drivers side and passenger side.

to me, it looks like there is more wheel gap on the passenger side.  also notice how the wheel is not centered in the well.  it is pushed back toward the rear.  could a bent front swaybar cause this?  a few months ago i replaced both lower control arms.

it definitely looks bent man.

you should check the passenger side suspension.  the tension control rod may also be bent if the castor is off...dunno if a bent swaybar would do it.

as far as lowering.  Make sure that the spring is seated properly in the perches.  if not, you will sit higher.

I dont think a bent sway bar could cause the wheel to be off center like that. I would look at the tension rod mount and the controle arm. one of them is bent. to bad I just threw away my stock sway bars I would have gave it to you.

i replaced the lower control arm so it must be the sway bar and or tensoin rod.  anyone have a pic of what the sway bar should look like?

Isn't that a castor adjustment.....as far as the wheel not being centered?  Have you gotten an alignment to see if it's out?

I need to look at mine, because I'm pretty sure looking down from the top in the engine bay w/o the fan shroud, mine looks like it is pushed back on the passenger side......not bent looking like yours though.  Also, my passenger side front wheel isn't centered up just like yours.  My castor is within specs too.  I did rear-end someone a long time ago and most of the damage was to the front passenger side......so maybe mine is due to that.....this was back in '96, and I can't remember if the sway bar and passenger front wheel had those issues prior to then.
Next time I drive down to Florida, I'll take a look at it......maybe in a few weeks or so.

you know i looked at both my s12's and they both seem to have a bend at the same spot. maybe its like that so its easier to get to the coolant drain plug?

looks "normal" to me. i just did my swaybar bushings, and i looked at that thing for the longest time, wondering if it was bent. So it looks like mine does. The tension rod has alot to do with forward/rearward placement of the wheel. also, if your strut mounting location is incorrect (bent, etc) is could throw off the placement. an alignment will reveal your problems, so long as the tech knows what hes doing. if you get one, put the specs up!

yup! The swaybar itself is basically a difference spring! (my own term). Basically, it acts like a third coil spring up front, so that when one side is lower (shifted weight during cornering) it tightens up on that side, which suppresses the body roll. hence the term Anti-Roll Bar. so long as it aint broken, severely bent, or unbolted, it should work.

It does seem to have a strange looking kink in it but then again they all do. Definitely something wrong with that right front corner though. An alignment won't necessarilly tell you what's up either because they don't measure where the wheel is located in the wheel well. Hope you didn't bend the chassis!

a good alignment tech will see that the wheel is located incorrectly and measure setback. Setback is basically the position of the wheel in relation to the axle (imaginary line).

if you have a good alignment rack you can measure castor sweep by turning the wheels back and forth. but castor isn't adjustable in stock form... need tension rods and s13 front suspension conversion  then you can whack curbs and fix shit.

I just took a peep at my front swaybar today when I was in the engine bay, and it looks exactly like yours, so I guess that's how it's supposed to be.

But I'd still bet your TC rod is bent.
