Q For Those With 18det Swaps And R180 Diff
« on: 09:56:37 PM / 09-Aug-07 »
Is there any problem with running the 18DET mated to the CA20's R180 diff insofar as gearing? What I'm getting at is, the CA20 cars already twirl 3500+ rpm @ 75mph...And yes, I know, the R200 is "the Diff to end all Diffs" but I already have a Nismo R180 2-way LSD for 280ZX waiting to be thrown in; don't think I'd get anywhere near breaking even by selling it off and purchasing the Nismo R200 unit....and the R200, plus shafts, etc from either the 240 or another S12.

I don't see any problems with it. I'm running my SR with the stock 4.11:1 R180, though the revs push closer to 4k at 75MPH.

Where'd you get the Nismo diff, and for how much?

picked it up at www.thezstore.com
it isn't actually labeled as a "Nismo" item, but since Nismo are the only ones who made one for the Z's, I believe it is the very same item w/o the stamp of officiality. Two-way clutch type limited slip, cost me about $800 shipped when I bought it almost two years ago...price has since risen dramatically:

Was it a whole diff, or just the clutch part?

And, to put it in perspective... I'm at ~4000 rpms in my s2000 at 80mph, with the stock 4.11 gears, with a 8200 redline, so pretty similar characteristics, and it's not really that bad. Maybe with taller gearing better gas mileage... but who doesn't want to accelerate quickly?

In fact, a lot of people upgrade to 4.57 gears, so you're at ~4500 at 80mph, and it takes 3rd gear to get to 60

go back to the link, look under "limited slip assemblies". shows the item, albeit in a cut-away drawing format. they're selling the actually differential, no case.
