How To: Push Button Start
« on: 06:11:06 PM / 23-Aug-07 »
Hey everyone! here is the write up on how to do a push button start on the S12. The button mounting is up to you... Mine I got from Circuit City's (I work there) Thump Room Buttons.. Any button will work, just go to Radio Shack! SO! Heres how you do it:

Wiring Info:
-Blue-Accessory
-Black/Yellow- Starter

Parts Needed:
-2 Terminal Push Button

Tools Needed:
-Wire Cutters
-Wire Strippers
-Solder
-Soldering Gun
-Electrical Tape

1. Remove steering column cover.
2. Locate the Blue and Black/Yellow wire in key cylinder.
3. Tap the red wire to the blue (acces) wire. (make sure the wire is fused)
4. Cut the black/yellow wire.
5. Tap the black wire to the starter side on the black/yellow wire.
6. Tape off the end of the black/yellow wire (cylinder side).
7. Reinstall the steering column cover.

YOUR DONE!

Push Button Start Video

ENJOY!!! K-LOX.

Cool stuff. Always wanted to know how to do that...

Also, what amperage fuse do you suggest? 20, 25?

It'd depend on wire amp rating, what the rated wattage on the switch is, and how much watts run through the starter wire.

And Klox =) thanks for this, someone should pin it!

No Problem! Go with a 10 or 15 AMP Fuse! You don't want a fuse rating that is too high!!!

Also, if you want to do this on your other vehicles,
http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/vehicles.html
has wiring diagrams for car alarm installs, which has the info for the colors on the ignition switch harness.

reason I post this, i was gonna do it on my corolla as well as my nissan, but the corolla is my test vehicle, so I wanted to do it on it first.

Might be a dumb question, and I don't mean to sound negative......but whats the point?  Looks like you still have to turn the key "on" first, before you push the button.....

I would see it as a theft protection, cause most theifs use bump keys and if they turn it and it isn't starting, they go WTF, this is a POS and leave..

The button just has to be digusied or hidden

yup, you turn the key and it just runs down the battery =)

The only thing is, make sure you get a good quality button, otherwise you'll be dealing with a lot of shorting out when you try to start it.

Has anyone played with an immobilizer? Like an RFID key system where you just hop in the car, chip on a keychain closes the starter ciruit then push button start?

It would be realllllyyy cool.

well, you said directly to the starteR?
why not just to the wires by the steering wheel?

mine worked for a day and killed my starter, but you saw my video so i guess you get it.

post a pic of your button

Awe... i remember when i posted this thread... good times... i adventually took out the push button, cuz it was driving me crazy... cuz in the early mornings and late nights... i would for get i had it!!! lol...

well later i had a problem with the wire that went from the key to the starter... so i hooker it up again.. cuz i was too lazy to see what was wrong wit it.. only this time, i used 12v from teh battery, and a wire straight from the battery... more reliable than the 20 plus year old ign. wires!!!

Good tutorial. Helped me alot, and not that difficult. though i would suggest an inline tap tha tyou can get at walmart for like 20 cents. I wired the button next to my e-brake  though i accidently broke the panel i placed the switch and button in so i need to find another one at the junkyard...

So I can go straight from the starter to the button? And ground the wire from the otherside of the button
