Just curious- typed in Nissan L28, L28ET, nothing comes up.

Assuming I got the designation right (280ZX Turbo engine, right?), anyone played with one of these things? Are they a pain in the butt to deal with?

Do you think it would fit in an S12? Hope it could be made to run without the gazillion miles of vacuum pipes, smog, etc.- just a turbo, and 6 fuel injectors.

Nope, have no particular reason, other than curiousity and liking to be different.
Some of these Japanese cars I've been 'discovering' on Japanese Nostalgic Car got me thinking quite a bit. Plus I've always been intrigued with factory protoypes, development mules, etc.- stuff that never made it to Joe Public. Thought maybe tossing a S12 and a 280ZXT in a blender might produce an interesting result.

Maybe a mini-sized mutant relation to the early 80's boxy Skylines? 2000RSX-Turbo, right?

Any comments, remarks, etc. would be appreciated.

Thank you.

All I know is that upping the boost plus the usual basic bolt-ons with a custom fmic kit would yield you 300 whp. That was the simple route I was planning to go with if I pick up a local 240z.

ive seen them swapped into s13 240sx, 810 maximas, 240z's etc.

i was thinking about doing one in my m30.

as far as bolting in, its similiar to doing an rb swap, which there area  few of here.

and yes, they will make 300hp, easily, cheaply, and pretty damn reliably.

You will be nose heavy.

Boosted I6 > NA V8

Its a pretty long iron block.
I'd rather be a matchstick than a lighter.

watch a few episodes of the show Wangan Midnight and you'll want an L28 lol

Yea, they're heavy, and kind of a pita to work on.  With the intake and exhaust ports on the same side, doing work in there is kinda my version of hell.  Esp. if you have no power, little light, in someone elses driveway.  Not that its ever happened to me, btw.

But the potential... amazing.  Ever heard of one with the diesel crank?  500hp capability, anyone??

L28 is a Beast of a cock motor, plagued with Fi issues, heat, oil leaks just old age in general, like 200sx said "PITA"

enough said.
if want a 6 cylinder go VG,VQ or RB

yes, diesel crank makes it a 3.1 stroker.

and you guys are crazy if you think they are hard/pita to work on, and then suggest a vg.

from my experinace its like driving a boat that steers from the front. I have owned 260z its typical driving a roaderster style car,

reminded me of my camaro, and driving a Jaguar XKR series sport coupe. long nose.. like driving Giant dildo. " hey baby i got somthing for you"

rofl, so would you say, its along the lines of a v8 mustang? front heavy and likes to understeer.

on the contrary its opposite of that. long nose/engine puts enough weight on the wheels that does not happen to often.

A SBC ( small block Chevy is lighter and go fast parts are easier to come by. By installing one it moves the center of balance more towards the rear wheels. There are a few cases where people have installed SBC motors and ended up with a 48/52 balance. Swap kits are cheap and easy to get.

I guess that why I am going to leave the stock L28 in my car or install a VG30ET in it. To install the VG30ET I will have to make custom manifolds ...etc for the car.

The l28ET is a good set-up. It keeps most of the original parts and is "somewhat correct for the series of car." But to get a lot of power you will need a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$!!!!

2 (four or six) many projects,,, TOOOOOO little time!!!!!

i have a exrta l28 from a 77z i bought it for a back up for my 77 280z which was stupid cause that motor is so reliable........now that i converted it to caburated but if my motor ever goes out in my turbo 200 i might just try a l28 swap no probloms with caburated very easy 77 and 78 have a spot for a manual fuel pump and pop a 260 mani to cover up the injector holes sounds awesome

Arro

L28E from a 280Z has a very different head than the L28E or L28ET in the 280ZX.

IMO, the work required to make this fit would be better served with an RB.

THAT IS EASY, anyone can camber a skinny as tire till it dosnt rub. Now fitting an 11 with a 315 on stock fender with reasonable camber, that is fitment. And looks, and performs better than both.

^^^agreed but...

... he says he already has the engine... so a couple hours of fiddling and welding and the thing could be in without spending a buck... doesn't have the capacities of a RB (25det or 26dett...) but for the cost of it, it could be the best bang for the buck this guy has...

BattleFairy

:yay!: i just was yesterday googling about s13 L28 swap

why all that hate for the L28?

-displacement
-Turbo
-cheap
-strong
-YES lighter than a RB (postet serveral Z sides)
and if it fit in a AE86 than it also fit inside a s12

iam at the end of a RB swap and serious, if a L6 would not be super expensive here i would throw such carbed bitch inside

lol nice i can see of course it is a tight fit and yes i have evrything i need lying around and the sound.....:) staight 6 with carbs straight pipe sounds very beffy  thats what i have in my 77 280z ive also owened 280zx turbo and it was fast but......i was always having probloms with it so i sold it so many wires and vacum lines and i hate to say it but i kinda hate the fuel setup i mean the fuel line loops like 3 times around the head and i hear the turbo heads have been known to crack......:(
