Nice!!! Good to see someone with the balls to mod a ca20e. Let us know how the motor performs once you get it back together.
DUDE! I LEARNED THAT IN JAIL!

Nitro

Can you tell a full story please? You said that you made it a sport car in '84... That means that you taken a new S12 at that time and build a race car back then or I am mistakenly get it? Because photo of you behind the wheel is looking quite old.

Quoteextra 'p' in model # may mean preproduction, as vin # says 7th car off the production line

You should feel really lucky!!!

Make sure you take good care of that car, it may be the oldest documented production S12!!!

And FYI (for people unfamiliar with VIN coding): the 7 does NOT mean that it is the 7th S12, it means that it was the 7th vehicle to roll out of that particular plant. So it may very well be one of the first S12s!

i bought the car in '02 from my friend don reynolds who was the head motorbuilder for nissans imsa gtu and gtp program. here is the gtp car

here is don driving a gtu car

he got my car from wade hampton, owner of american instruments and nissans sponsor of the electomotive nissan imsa cars. wades son, ryan hampton, is now a pro race driver, including indy lights, alms, and d1 drifting. http://members.cox.net/ryanracer/ryanracer/index.html he won scca national championship(s) in the car i now call mine. heres a pic of it from his website.

and what he drives now (although ive seen an article where hes drifting a 69 camero now)

my understanding is that wade hampton had this car built for ryan from the factory, and was later bought/given to don reynolds, who then sold it to me. it has had many motor rebuilds and don isnt sure of all the details, so now im learning as i dig into it. when i bought it, i changed fluids and took it racing. this is the first time ive ever really taken it apart. ive never had the oilpan off so have not seen the rods, but am very curious, but further disassembly means longer wait until track time, so doubt ill tear down the motor further.

Digging needs to be done! I wanna know how many S12s were made before this one... Kinda cool to say "Yea, this is one of the first S12s ever produced, cuz it was the 7th car off the assembly line in the Nissan plant..."

Ooooo, I'm getting chills!

It's not a powerhouse, it's a CA20E  Bluke will be the first to say he's more concerned about *handling* than power.

this is going to sound dumb, but the 1974 next to ca20e does refer to ccs right?...omg, i need to go double check my plate right now...

nm, it does refer to ccs...i had this weird feeling that his car was made in 74 for a second in some secret ungerground nissan base.

Hey Jason WTH is that supposed to mean LOL. I'm more concerned about handling too.  Maybe not to that extent, but I would have sported my 20E auto for a long ass time if the 20e didn't have weird 80s electrical problems. That, and if I didn't pick up that 18det car haha. It's ok, more power = more fun for a street car haha.

bluke1

arro is correct. handling comes FIRST. but once youve got that sorted out, more power never hurt anyone!  this car handles great, sleight understeer on very slow corners, like an autocross, but at racing speed it is really predictable, and ive got the rear adjustable sway bar set to full stiff, so it rotates well. even when the rear steps out, it sits there without snap-spinning. im gonna ask don if he still has his dyno, im curious too!

Are you running the car at HRMC? I met Don once at Hallett, very smart guy. Glad to see someone else racing one of these cars. I ran an 87 v6 in SCCA for appx 6 years. Great fun!

yeah, i love hallett! ive raced there many times, but my s12 hasnt been there in 3yrs or so. but it should make its return later this summer! don used to drive this car back when century racing was still around, it had a passenger seat and was yellow with billy blank? (the martial arts guy) stickers. they had street tires on it and would give potential customers rides where don would have the car sideways in every corner to scare them. what did you do with your old racecar? where are you from? i dont see it on your user info.

Of course, dude! You're a handling guy, so the engine is secondary to you. You don't even plan to push lots of power through your CA18DET anyways  If anything, you and Bluke have more in common. So yeah, your CA20E car can "race", because racing corners isn't the same as top speeds.
