Turn Signal Wiring

I was driving home today.  About half way there, my turn signals quit working.  No click click from under the dash, no flash from the signals, and no flashing indicators on the gauge cluster - Nothing at all.

I checked the fuse, it was good.  I changed it out with another and it still didn't work.  I then changed out the flasher relay (under the drivers side dash) with a brand new one.  That didn't work either.

What else could it be???  Is there another relay in the engine bay or is there something I am missing?

If it matters, the car is a 1987 and it originally had a ca20e.

If you have a spare turn signal assembly try swapping it that's what my old parts car did years ago. I put a new one in there and viola I blew the head.

Had the same problem with my MK1.  Pull the hazard switch out of the column.  Take it apart, clean everything.  Maybe lightly sand the contact points.  Put it all back together and see what happens.  The turn signal circuit goes through the hazard switch.  Although I heard rumor that MK2s are different.  Try it out.

The MK2 have a combo flasher for the hazard and turn signals.  A few years ago, the relay went out and i replaced it with a regular relay.  The turn signals worked fine but I didn't have any hazards. No big deal.  Now I have nothing.

I will investigate the stalk/column.

Turn signal assembly?  What does all of that include?

I tore the unit out of the steering column today.  It appears that the brushes for the turn signal switch is worn all the way down.  My bright lights quit working a while ago so I am pretty sure that this booger is the culprit behind them too.  I am going to look for another unit.  Thanks for your help.

Yeah, its super common for the switches to wear out/contacts to get dirty/burned, and can cause all sorts of problems.  I think you can get them from the dealer, otherwise try and find one out of a low mi S12...

wow, I could only imagine the dealer price.

UPDATE!!!!  I took the turn signal/headlight unit out of my B13 Sentra and it bolted right up in the stock spot on my 200sx!!  The auto return for the signals probably won't work but everything else should!  The only thing stopping me is the wiring.  There are 11 wire coming off of the S12 unit and 11 wires coming off of the B13 unit.  Some colors match, some don't.  Being that there are the same amount of wires, its probably just a matter of splicing the correct ones together by using some wiring diagrams/fsm's as a reference.  I am so stoked!!

Interesting... let us know how it goes.  B13's are alot easier to find than S12s these days...

If this works out with wiring it will be great.  Is there a relay in the engine bay for the turn signals?  I cant find that info in my haynes manual.

I am pretty sure that the turn signal unit that bolts to the steering column is the problem behind why my turn signals aren't working, but I just want to confirm that.  I replaced the fuse in the fuse panel, and the flasher relay under the dash.  Are there any other relays or units that could be at fault here?  There are some relays in the engine bay but the text is all faded on them and I cannot tell if one is for the turn signals.  Does anyone know.

the only thing else I can think of is the fuseable link in the engine bay. Aside from that possibly the storage switch in the fuse panel.  Is there power getting to the fuse period.  To test that take out the fuse.  Then with a test light put the alligator clip to ground, and with the probe test to where both sides of the fuse connectors go into the fuse.  there should be power on one side, and nothing on the other.

I don't believe there are any other relays, just the flasher/fuse, switch, etc.

The fuse is getting power.

On the relay under the dash on the drivers side there are three wires.
Green w/ White stripe
Black
Green w/ Black stripe

None of the three wires have voltage when key is on and when the turn signal is engaged.

Continuity exists between the Black and Green/Black stripe wire when the key is off, on, and turn signal engaged.

If I hook a 12v source to the Green/White stripe wire, the hazards work.

I am clueless as to what to do next.

Would someone mind checking their flasher relay for voltage and continuity so I could check it against mine.
