Well after 5 days of working on it and swearing at it I finally dropped my old 5spd in my S12, the Datsun badged one of course. It all started 2 weeks ago when a friend of mines did a stall out in his camaro. I proceeded to the same little did I know that my tranny was already pretty much dead and I blew it or something. The rpms stopped at 6500 and the car lurched forward slowly at full throttle. The next day Rev wouldn't engage and every setting on the shifter threw her in drive. For 4 days I pushed her out and drove her to work till my vacation last weds. I parked her beside my old S12 and plotted what to do. Day 1 started the task of lifting both cars on blocks. The next day I janked the motor and trans out of my blue car. Day 3 dropped the auto slosh box from my silver one. Day 4 ripped the motor out out after realizing what a pain in the ass it was going to be to mate the tranny under the car, I joined them that day and dropped the motor in and buttoned it all up. Day 5, today, bled the lines, ran my wires, effed something up, and was happy. I am now a proud owner of a S12 with a ghetto 5spd setup.
Some notes that I learned despite what some might say:
It is not easy
Very little things swap over
Parts for this swap included: 1 pilot bushing, 2 clutch alignment tools, a pulley puller modified to rip out old bushings, some Cokes, some beers, lots of tobacco and papers, bandaids, degreasers, 8mm 10mm 12mm 14mm 17mm 22mm wrenches and sockets, lots of jacks and blocks, fireant killer, did I mention beer?
The drive-shaft of an Auto DOES NOT mate up with a 5spd tail.
There will be some kind of short that you will have to find and fix.
Once you fix said short you encounter a bigger problem.
Do not abuse engine mounts
It is best to have a parts car around for extra bolts seeing as nearly none of your bolts will work.
Your auto trans mount will NOT fit the 5SPD
When you get mad sit down and have a beer and you'll realize you missed something pretty stupid.
Do not rush it.
Try and work on a hard surface not grass and dirt, have you ever tried moving an engine hoist with motor and tranny on some grass?
Have another beer (Budweiser)
that's about it.
Now here are some pics
The cars both of 'em are 84s with SRAs in em
My Parts car
What you don't see is that those dark spots on the dirt are hundreds of ants
The Spare silver top CA20 I have in the parts car
I put this to my ear and all I heard was suck
Free paperweight!!!
I think I broke my shifter?
What my dog's reaction was when I told him he could drop the motor in
Yeah it's a Datsun what about it?
With enough time and patience(and beer) I would like to drop this in my car
that's about it folks 'cept for this last pic of my car when there wasn't greasy hand prints over all of it
yeah I be rockin some blue rims jealous?
