Random Dying When Operating Temperature.
« on: 11:57:40 PM / 04-Sep-08 »
when i drive the car and its cold it starts fine and once it warms up a little it accelerates fine.  it does idle ridiculously high like at 1200.  it didn't idle ridiculously high till after i replaced a lot of vacuum lines but the car ran a shit ton better.  How ever when it gets warm it will randomly die.  The rpm gauge will drop to 0 even thow you can still hear the motor turn over.  I originally thought it was my dizzy wire but i have soddered it and re insulated it and then checked ohms for connection purposes.  Also the last time it died it backfired alot really loud like a gun fire about 6 times.  it then wouldnt start.  then i let it sit for like a min and it started and i drove it home.  But sometimes if its hot out side and i havnt even driven it it wont start.  I think its the dizzy but im not sure.  I want an opinion first before i spend a large amount of money on it.

It could be the optical sensor in the distributor, but I would take the FSM that is available for download in the general tech section stickied at the top and go thru it, doing the diagnosis to see if you can determine the problem.

Any codes out of the computer?

Did you replace the vac lines one at a time to ensure they weren't mixed up at all?

I did replace all the vacuum lines 1 at a time so i know most of them are right except like 1 of them.  But the car had the random dieing thing before i fixed all the vacuum lines.

I checked the codes when cold and it works fine it gives 2 codes.  I for the idle switch and the other for the air conditioner.

there was one time i pulled the codes when it was hot and wasnt responding right it gave me crank angle sensor, coolant temp sensor,  Mas air sensor, idle switch and air conditioner.

Ok I finally fixed my gremlin.

1.  I found a brand new factory never been used before dizzy wire. WOOTNESS but that didnt fix the problem.

2.  I took out the optical unit out of the dizzy scrapped off the orange insulator crap soaked it in 91% rubbing alcohol for and hour.  Let it dry over night and my gremlin was gone.  Re timed the car and it runs like a champ.

Any pictures of this?

Did you soak the sensor unit or the slotted ring?

Good to hear you got it fixed!!

no unfortunately i don't have pictures but next time i do a project I will do pics.

I took out the optical sensor which is where the pigtail of the harness plugs into.  Its black and round with a part that sticks out and a wafer like meatal piece spins threw.  I removed the metal wafer careful not to bend it and unmounted the optical sensor.

on the back of the sensor there is an orange rubber crap i carefully scrapped most of the orange rubber crap off so that it would expose the circuit board for the optical sensor.  I noticed there was crap on the board that wasnt the orange crap it looked like some sort of oxidation.  So i put the sensor in a bowl and filled the bowl with rubbing alcohol with a q-tip rubbed off the visible crap i could see but knowing that there are 2 sides to the board i let it sit in the alcohol for an hour.  I then took out the sensor and sat it on a table for 12 hours to dry out.

then i reassembled the dissy and put in in my car (mind you i marked the position of the dissy before i took it out for easy reinstall.)  The car started right up.  And i drove it to work the next day.  it was gutless so i took it to my dads house and retimed it.  It was 5 - 10 Degrees off on the timeing and after i fixed that it was like zoom zoom zoom.  It hasenst dided since and it has started every time.

stickied!  this is good info!

I'm a bit concerned tho that you lined everything back up with the lines you made, but was off then in terms of timing...

I timed the car before i diagnosed the fact that the sensor was giving me issues.  so i made lines with a permanent marker to make sure i reinstalled it in the same place.  So maybe my timeing might be off by 1/2 deg to 2 deg tops which wouldn't be enough to compromise the funtionality of the car.

just wanted to add on... I had the same problem with my 84.. started fine and drove fine until it reached temp then out of no where while accelerating it would die and i'd have to pop the clutch to get it to restart.. but that didn't always work, got it home and tore apart the distributor and cleaned the optical sensor and soaked it in rubbing alc, let dry and reinstall and I haven't had any problems since.

I think I maby got this problem on my ca18et; when it's cold it goes on about 1000rpm and suddenly almost dies before it catches up to 1000 again. And when I drive it suddenly wants to die and I have to take the clutch in and save it.

So if I got it right I have to take out the optical sensor from the distributor and clean it in alcohol (clean of the "Orange crap" and the oxidation)?

I hope someone can answer me quick.

So I got this far today. What do I have to do to get to the sensor from here?

I dont know if your dizzys look different but this is how far i got, no idea what orange stuff you guys are scraping off :woow:

I tried to remove the 2 screws in the last pic but they have been covered in some sort of resin to stop them being removed. Tried to scrape the resin off but no luck.

ok so mk1 and mk2 dizzys are different. The first one i posted was from a mk2 i believe which was enclosed and sealed. i cracked open the mk1 dizzy and this what i have:

while trying to remove the orange yellowy jellow crap i managed to rip off a few of the components :sniffles: luckily i had another spare.
I realised one thing, both the sensors had loose contacts where the harness routes to.

ive cleaned as much as possible, soaked it in 70% alcohol for over an hour, left it to dry out and will be resoldering the contacts in the morning then testing it out. Wish me lucks guys

No luck with this, re-soldered the pads on the second dizzy i had, re-assembed and no spark  :reallysad:

Luckily the sealed type dizzy I first posted sparked fine. Timed it all up and runs like a champ! Will update if my gremlin has gone.

Also found out you can buy these crank angle sensors from aus ebay site:

Incase anyone ever needs one.
