Tedious?  This coming from a person who uses the word twice in a sentence?  I laughed repeatedly...

I dig the truck!   Its still a skyline, therefore relatively sexy and uuber fast.

Regardless, this likely won't become the truck.  I want a fucked up S12 for that, and this car is actually quite straight.  A truck will be in the future...

Joe, thanks for the offer on the trans, I've actually got a SUPER SWEET hookup with one of the local members  whom I'm picking up a super lo mi auto trans from, and that will probably go in, the current one will come out, and I'll play with that one.  The original one is actually in good shape, it was low on fluid and initially wouldn't go into gear, so I'm going to change the filter and have it flushed, should work out nicely.  The fluid is still decent, this car appears to have been taken care of during its life... and even then, again its only got 102k on the clock, not bad at all.

the underside of this car makes my notch want to cry!  sooo clean

For built auto trans, goto Level 10. I hear they do great work and build near indestructible auto trans. So far I've only had Nissan guys talk about them, more so on the Maxima forums and some on Nicoclub. Good find Sterling!

200sxkitcar

What I want,

what I really really want,

is an auto trans with a manual valve body.

I think it would be SWEET

dunno if anyone has done that tho.  I will check out this Level 10 place...

Here's a good read if you're thinking of something crazy. It's for a 240sx, but it'll still work for us haha.

You talking about the one you posted a pic in?  I see that one.  If you posted another one not a clue and no one has deleted it.

Wilkie

Yeah, it was in this thread at first, but appears to have been moved to its own thread.

That's pretty cool, but really in the end, it's still a sloppy slushy automatic... Though it might not be too bad with higher light pressure and uprated clutches.

What makes an automatic "slushy" are the shift plates... I don't fully understand planetary automatic transmissions, but i know you can change the shift feel.

Its actually all about hydraulic pressure in the unit, and how quickly the fluid moves thru the valve body, more than the discs.  I'd likely keep the same type discs just mod the valve body so the pressure is slightly higher and the engagement more firm.

you can mod an auto trans so that it shifts so hard it puts you in the back seat, but I'm not going to get that nuts with it obviously.  Its more finding the info on how to do these mods, I can look at the hydraulic system diagram and understand the movement of fluid thru the system and mod as needed, just as you would an electrical diagram (only more complex) but I'd rather find someone/info if its been done before and how.  I believe that the auto trans in an S12 and later S-chassis are virtually the same, with the S12 being more hydraulic (simpler, often easier to mod) so much should carry thru.

So the car has had an overheating problem since we first started it, never actually overheated but the needle has been creeping up too high.  Today while cleaning I discovered after a short drive around the apartment parking lot that when the engine is getting to the too-hot point that the upper radiator hose is still completely cold- the thermostat is stuck shut.  So tomorrow before the car goes into storage I'm going to throw in a new t-stat and then it should be not too bad!

I don't know how different the Nissan transmissions are from other manufacturers, but that's what the shift plate does, it essentially directs the flow of the fluid, and modifying the plate's design modifies the delivery. Shift plates go over the top of this:

I'd actually be curious to see what a RMVB was like on this... I know you mentioned it before. Chrysler guys do it. It's not for me, but it would be fun sometimes.

Usually its just a modified valve body vs another added component, it varies highly based on manufacturer.  Nissan is fairly conventional, Chrysler trans design can be quite 'different' altogether.
