Ecotec From A Cobalt
« on: 06:38:40 PM / 02-Jan-09 »
as i was reading about the swap for the geo tracker it dawned on me. could be a good swap plenty of parts available and well its superchared from the factory. there are a few companys out there that make an adapter for rwd tranny setup as well. dont know how the trans from a solstice would mount to our crossmembers, but they mate to the ecotec. from what i understand the engine itself has all kinds of holes for different mounting application.

im off to go see "yes man" so ill post more later along with some links.

Sounds cool.  Those engines aren't bad, though I Was riding in my friend's XA and he destroyed a Cobalt SS from a roll.  I think the guy was just a horrible driver.

There's a site http://quad4rods.com/ that makes a bellhousing adapter to hook an Ecotec up to the T5 Chevy tranny.

the ecotec, even by itself puts out 140 hp. (unless you have a malibu classic like myself, which has 145 stock, lol). Mated to the 4t45e (auto) its kinda sluggish below 2500 rpm, but wakes up pretty quickly, goes to 6000~ rpm..you'd think it would go higher? Mated to a manual, it goes fairly well right off the line. its impressive. Now, if you could get the VVT 2.4 ecotec it produces 172 (iirc) NA Hp. I even considered it when i had my SE, but..just didnt have the cash.

from what they are saying you can pick them up pretty cheap (if you consider 2k cheap) for the supercharged ones. which is the one ill be wanting.
i saw the adapter for the t5, but i wont make a decision to i research the gearing, but that should only take about 5 mins. i guess the t5s are a bit easier to come by than the solstice transmissions.

anyways for now i just gotta look at the dimensions of the engine and tranny and see if they will even fit in the bay.

so which model s12 do you think would get the best use out of this swap. im thinking a sra notch but im biased.

someone post the dimensions of the trans tunnel in this thread for reference?

No model of S12 would get the best use of this swap. Terrible idea on so many levels. Go get some air.

you gonna have to back that statement up with some solid reasons.

so far the cons are
supercharged
great gas mileage
good aftermarket
light engine
oh and you cant argue with 200+ hp in stock form

i dont think the ecotecs are the same from the sky redline and the cobalt ss. i remember reading that somewhere but i could be wrong.

im waiting to get dimensions of our trans tunnel compared to the trans tunnel of sky. i have a few different options as far as trannys go but i think i want a six speed.

i missed out on a cobalt engine last month at our local yard but oh well i can wait.

main reason for the 30 horses is the sky and the solstice are direct injection.
