Just wondering if anyone else fitting in the 280z front strut insert had the same situation as me of the strut being just a hair longer than the original resulting in the screw cap only seating in about halfway and should I maybe grind some metal off the bottom of the strut to shorten it or leave the cap showing some thread?

Yes, that sounds vaguely familiar.  Like there's a reverse cup on the bottom of the strut that you need to grind a lil from in order to make it seat well.
