I know where the two bolts are and I'm right now trying to replace my starter. I can't get the top bolt off. Any suggestions?

I use a breaker bar, 2 very long 1/2" extensions & a knuckle to get at it from the back of the gearbox (manual). It can be a stubborn prick of a thing if it hasn't been removed for a while.

mine is an automatic, the bolt is covered by a brake line and i can't get a tool on it. i bought a rachat that bends so hopefully by the grace of my girls small hands i can get it off.

I've done this a couple times.  Undo the transmission from the mount and then jack it up from the tailhousing.  The motor will tilt forward away from the firewall and you will have plenty of room to remove the bolts.

Thanks for all the comments on this. Changed my starter on the CA20 last night. Took forever to get that top bolt out but using the method of jacking up the rear part of the tranny made it happen. Now the new starter sounds almost like it’s engaging too long on startup. Same noise as As if you tried to start the car that’s already running. It only does it for a second at the end of the startup sequence though. Hopefully it isn’t bad.

I replaced my starter several months ago with a reduction starter and now have the same. There are fewer teeth on the starter gear so it spins faster. The teeth are cut at a more acute angle as well. It's manageable by paying closer attention to when you release the ignition switch from 'start' to run.

Reduction gear starter on top, standard starter on bottom.

Yes mine was actually to reduction starter and I put the other one in. It starts every time now
Just a little extra noise. I’ll ease up and try to prevent it. Hopefully it doesn’t wear out any gears faster.

I thought reduction (top pic) was the only one available.  Is the bottom pick for a ca20 and where did you source it??

The bottom is from my 85 black top CA20 and I judged it to be original.
