what are your thoughts on these? I can likely get an SE m/t radiator from oemsurplus (or whatever aftermarket radiator. maybe a mishimoto) but my car is a/t. would running a separate transmission fluid cooler be a bad idea for any reason?

Stock Radiator with trans cooler < Separate units

It would be better for your trans to run an aftermarket cooler. The colder the trans fluid can be the better, and seeing as your coolant wouldn't be heating up the trans fluid. It could maintain a nice, lower temp for trans longevity, smoothness, and overall clutches and valve body health

get one with a thermostat, you dont want to overcool it.
jay, the engine coolant cools down the trans fluid, not heat it up.

Yes, except in the case of an overheat. Then the trans the trans on a VG (Which is if I am not mistaken) Is very similar (if not the same) to the z31 trans. which, if overheated, is more or less screwed.

It was very poorly phrased. It should have read "Instead of the trans fluid being cooled down to coolant temp.". I was in class half asleep when I said that. You are correct. But I've never heard of a case in the trans fluid being too cold though.

well of course overheat is bad, really bad lol
fluid just is thicker when cold, so it doesn't flow as well.

tranny fluid is like engine oil...it has an optimal operating  temperature.  You dont want it too hot or too cold. You want it just right....like porridge.
