Info Wanted On Vg30dett Install
« on: 12:49:24 AM / 11-Aug-10 »
I have searched my but off on information regarding a VG30DETT swap.  No real information exists on this.  Only the same few pics of a few in the engine bay, but nothing about what ever became of these cars.  What ever happened to the guys that put these cars together?  Someone on here has to know more that the search reveals.  I have aprox 90% parts to assemble a complete VG30DETT including turbos.  Sitting....waiting....I need more information about what issues prevented completion of these projects.  I heard something about relocating the turbos due to clearance issues but thats about it.  Ive seen the pics, the VGDE looks no more cramped than it does in a Z32 300ZX.  Please help guys, I am dying to get this project on the go.

your best bet? strip your s12's engine bay of pretty much everything and start with a clean slate.

drop the vg30dett in there, see what kinda clearance you get, and go from there with your extras.

you'll need to fab, relocate, and fab smore...but if you're adamant, it can be done, obviously.

I had no info on my swap going into it and I got it done anyway, through trial and error.

just dive in feet first.

Lol have fun doin this swap there's a reason there's no info on it but hey anything is possible like vg33 said jump in feet first fab measure and repeat many many times lol then be prepared to have a beast that goes in straight lines and doesn't do much else loli looked into this swap when I first came joined and ditched that idea real quick. Have fun and more power to you if you get this done. Please post many many pics along the way tho.

If he could sit it back far enough, the balance could be improved...but I don't know how far it'll go back without making changes to the firewall and trans tunnel, etc.

maybe, but honestly I say for us V6 guys, swapping to a vg33e is possibly the easiest swap.

yeah, you could go vg33er like me, but it's the same concept.

the motor fits right in, it uses factory motor mounts, headers aren't hard to find, nearly everything fits in factory places...

all you need is an upgraded ecu/wiring harness [or the factory ecu and wiring harness] and some custom hoses for the radiator you'll have to put in.

Im keeping my mind open until I can test fit the motor.  If it looks impossible to fit the turbos, I will revert back to using a NA VG30DE.

it's not even just the turbos that make it a tight squeeze, it's the DE part.

but, more power to you...I just prefer to not have to lift my motor out of the engine bay to do work on it lol.

There is NO joking in this sentence. It's waaay tighter than a z32, and personally, the Z32 is way too tight for that motor to begin with.

Having owned and hated a z32, I would never put a VGDE in an S12

If you wanted to do the TT though, remote mount would be the best option...

Sigh.... I'm not looking forward replacing it this time though. Either the whole car will go up in smoke, the trans will go up in smoke, Or I'll go straight into a tree.... I should take a video of the shaft play in the last turbo for ya... It's funny

Notice that S12 is a RHD car too

yuh, but it's still completely ridiculous.

yeah, the swap is cool and it's prolly pretty damn fast [my supercharger car is ridiculously fast] but still...at least I can get to my spark plug wires. xD

The VG30DE Has the coil on plug. They're between the intake runners. No plug wires to access, and in that car easy access to the plugs.

However, Anything under the intake manifold, and taking the manifold off, your fucking BONED

I have owned 4 Z32s and have dealt with injector problems and such on more that 1 occasion.  An intake pull on a VG is not that hard, plus the engine was designed that nearly everything is at the top or the bottom.  Sure you will have to pull the engine to axcess the turbos, but its no different on a Z32 chassi.  Only the S12 will have more clearance to get under the car.

I have been staring at a Z32 parked next to my S12 in the driveway.  The hood on the S12 is longer and wider.  It also has more depth that the Z32 chassis.  From the pic above(one of the 2 I have seen searching), the top of the motor(plenum)seems to fit pretty good.  That being the widest part of the engine, the only areas that would seem to cause clearance issues wuold be the turbos and downpipes.  Ill post some pics of what I have been looking at later.

that's completely ridiculous.

Look at this picture.  Imagine: battery, washer resevoir, Z32 fuse/relay box, charcoal cannister, alarm horn, cone filter all not in there.  This would free up a ton of room in the front corners of the bay.  Front mount turbos, and this leaves plenty room for downpipes and IC plumbing.

ey man, we're not here to tell you NOT to do it. We're just warning you that it's going to be difficult, it's going to take forever, and you're going to have to flex your fabrication muscles until they ache.

they told me the same thing when I started my swap.

We're not telling you no

we're just waiting for you to git r'done and prove it =]
