never saw a water pump fail that way

changing it is pretty easy.  if ur not too experienced with automotive work its best to google up some universal tips for water pump swaps.  also do urself a hugh favor a refer to the FSM for the exact procedure.  its available somewhere here in a sticky.  i havent messed with a 20e for quite a while but im pretty sure u dont have to touch the timing belt if u dont want to.  it would be a good time to change it if it hasnt been done though.  refer to the FSM for that as well.  GL

I have always had to mess with the timing while doing the water pump on the 20e...and it never ends well as i despise the timing belt tensioner on the 20e....this is one of the main reasons why i hate the 20e. There is no doubt some trick I have missed that prevents you from having to mess with it....but it shouldnt be as hard as i have made it out to be...it just looks like a giant pita once you get so far.

I saw ashley quoted me in her sig....that is freaking win!

You need to remove the timing belt to change the water pump, iirc.

I believe the tensioner gets in the way of the water pump bolts, thus you have to remove the t-belt, basically.

New water pump is like $30 or less.  I have at least 3 fans in stock (haha) and other parts, so if you need, etc.

If you're not super comfortable with the work, I can do a full pictured how-to, seeing as I have all the necessary pics, I just haven't gotten around to doing it.  If you follow the FSM (download on here in the General Tech section's stickies) it is fairly straightforward, you already have quite a bit out of the way.  I do recommend an impact on that 22mm crank bolt to get it loose btw, its not impossible otherwise, but makes life easier.

I've not found a fix for the hood pop-up issue, on cars I've had with the problem, a bungee cord of sufficient length so I can pull it up a bit while grabbing the release has usually worked.

GL with the build and keep us updated with pics!

Today failed.

I got all my belts off, and found out that my timing belt is brand new, pretty much, after I already bought one, ha.

I appreciate all the parts that people have for sale, haha. But I got it. Autozone FTW. I had actually called and ordered parts through Nissan on Monday, just in case Autozone wouldn't suffice. Turns out even OEM they can't order fans for the S12 because they're too old and don't make them anymore. For the time being, I'm going to use my old one just because I don't have the money for an e-fan. Soon though! I promise :]

I believe the ones from the 240sx fit as well...I did mine the other way though...took the fan off my ca20 and put it on my KA 'cause the KA one was f'ed up.

I wouldn't use the old fan, its unbalanced now because of the damage, and could tear up your new pump quickly.

Getting really defeated by the car. So the timing belt tensioner allen is stripped. It's between a 7mm and a 6mm (7 being too big, 6 being too small). It's almost completely rounded out.

I tried hammering a 7 into it, and none the less, I haven't been successful. Lots of stress-- the two guys who said they would help me out have both been lagging for a week. I don't have rides anywhere except to get to work.

I was going to try to use pliers to get it out since the hammering/filing idea didn't work. Surprisingly, neither I or any of my roommates have pliers. I need a ride to get some.

So. Incredibly. Frustrated.

Picture time?

Zip Tie timing belt clamp:

Don't worry, contents of catch-pan are not from my car, it was just to catch the water.

aim the camera a tad lower next time....or a lil more zoomed out. You could still be a boy with girly features and long hair. Proof is in the chesticles!

and as for removing the bolt.....have you tried those E-Z Outs or whatever they are called for use one stripped screws? you can get a whole set for 15bucks or so.....might be worth a try

i has sweet coilovers and hoshinos, also my hood isnt pregnant with a supercharger baby.

IggyEGuana

you could try pliers, channel locks, large vise grips.  out of them a big pair of quality vise grips might do it if u clamp them on very tight and use a heavy hammer on them to break it loose.

ya EZ outs, also called screw extractors.  you have to drill the hole in the allen bolt deeper though.  the ez outs really only work if they can dig into the metal.  honestly i've had mixed luck with them.  usually if the bolt ur tryin to get out is tight (which urs is) then its not comin out.  use one of the larger ez outs in the set and drill the hole large to match.  small ez outs will just snap with the torque that bolt probably has.  oh and that bolt will be made of somewhat hardened steel so you'll need a TI coated drill bit or even better a cobalt coated one.  GL

any way u go u still need a replacement for that allen bolt
