z32 trans and ka trans arent the same bolt patterns
truth! and the starters mount way differently. ka is thru the block to trans, z32 is bolted onto the trans.

Quote from: fyneyoungstunna
The ka trans is a replacement for our z32 trans, according to 300zxclub.com. and a few other websites its a bolt up affair

that is not possible. to use a z32 trans on a ka u need an adapter plate, so the same would be true if u used a ka trans on a vg. now a vg30e trans will bolt up to a vg30de or tt. the z32 na and turbo trans are identical besides the gear ratios.

google search it!
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

"no it totally works. google told me"

haha dork.

it wasnt google, as i said, on 300zx club.com this has been discussed and tried. this is fact.

oh and the started is NOT bolted to the trans

You do realize I own a z right?
And my bad on the bolted thing took that the wrong way

hmm so it seems like most of the problems on the qr are caused by not loctiteing the screws on something or another.

oil consomption is the same as above.

with mild boost and a stand alone 300hp is common.
i kinda like the idea of an sr 6 speed, but for ease of swap i guess a "c" trans will work.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

Is this another fantasy thread?

Dont come in my thread acting like a bamma, jack! Spilling your hater-aid all over my floor. you can eat my ass with a spoon!

Anyways ive been collecing more and more data on this swap, in detail, over the past few months.
I might be the first documented swap if the datsun 1200 roadster guy doesnt beat me to it. I might have a line on a full motor, but the competiton for it is stiff. If all else fails ill just pull a longblock from the jyard and go from there.

If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

Well, I'm pretty well sold on the qr25de or qr20de.  This could work out great.  The Frontier came with a rwd 5speed, I'm looking into that but haven't been able to source one for measurements.  It's a very lightweight solution with coil-on-plug ignition.  They're all low-mileage and so lightweight it's ridiculous.  Let's figure out what transmission options will work and make it happen.  I have a ka24de transmission sitting in my garage that I could test fit if I can find an engine.

<3 the QR25 - I'm shocked constantly how torquey, balsey and generally how useable this engine is.  By all accounts it responds to <12lbs of boost predictably and is fairly straightforward to tune.  Mileage sucks IMO, but the butterfly screws and general oil consumption problems you'll read about are mostly a non issue for me.  It's an extremely easy engine to work on....

Having said that, I'm swapping the QR25 out for a VQ35 as soon as practical instead of boosting what I've got.  :)

The QR25 is significantly lighter, but the VQ35 is one of the best engines Nissan ever made.  I'm far more concerned about weight.  With minor work, the qr25de should be able to hit 200whp n/a pretty easily, and that's where my power needs end.  I want to keep the car under 2000lbs, and the engine and trans are a huge part of that.

Both ka24e(de) and the vg30de from the z32 (not the turbo one) use the fs5w71c... the bellhousing is different along with the shifter assembly, but the transmission is the same... along with the rb20det, the vg30e in the S12, the mkII ca20e, s13 sr20det, etc... all the bellhousing swaps from one to the other, but the tailshaft assembly (where the shifter is bolted) is different from one tranny to the other depending on the platform it was used on and the gear ratio are also quite different.... so basicly, if you swap a qr25 bellhousing out of a frontier (if it uses the fs5w71c as stated above) with a s12 mkII tranny, you will have a bolt on tranny with the qr25 block and the stock driveshaft yoke and tranny cross member... as for the qr25, i quess we're talking about custom mount...

ok.. I was wrong on the fs5w71c being used in the z32 n/a... but the rest is accurate so you cannot bolt a z32 transmision (n/a or turbo) onto a fs5w71c bellhousing... but that doesn't change anything right??

...Well I've done some research, and it seems that the 2005+ frontier that uses the qr25 doesn't use the fs5w71c, the old one using the vg33e used to be bolted to it, but not the one using the qr25... so we are talking custom transmission crossmember and custom driveshaft with the correct yoke... so a qr25 into a s12 is no bolt-on affaire... but it would be quite cool IMO

Didnt think anyone was paying attention to this thread!!

@drummingpariah: 200hp is actually right around the corner. a better flowing exhaust is all you need well and intake to go with it.

as far as practicality goes, the qr still beats basically the whole lot of nissan engines outside of the fjet. 32mpg on 12lbs of boost is...welll....tits!!

Im still trying to find a test mule for the trans issue, but i think a bellhousing swap with an sr, or an ca18 will net supprising results.....

Jphillips: what year and how much mileage is on your qr ? what vehicle is it in?
I might buy it if the timing and money is right. i really want to make this happen. E85 is very prevalent out here and will do wonders for the qr.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

I've done quite a bit more research, and decided that an sr20de makes significantly more sense.  It mostly breaks down to a financial decision: the sr20de (normally aspirated) is $1250 for everything I need to swap it in, and makes comparable power with comparable weight.

good choice the amount of fab work and electronic components required to run a qr is just not worth it. qr25de's are meh well its a qr. ive seen my fair share of qr's go bad i think you are making a wise choice. not to mention high revving NA SR20DE'S kick ass!

Damn let a Nig have a moment of glory b4 you start fucking with him.

a qr in stock form has more hp and tq than a sr could ever ask for. and no, the weight isnt really comparable:  you get more hp and tq, and less weigh from a physically smaller engine.

Im not trying to shit on your choice, dont get me wrong, I understand finances are tight, mine are too.
But the qr outperforms the sr AND ka in every aspect.

I dont think its going to be as custom of a job as everyone is making it out to be, no more than a ka or sr or vg30 in to a ca20 car would be.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

Maxpow

Well vg30 isn't that hard because SE parts can just be moved over. This will require a lot more fab than just a trans mount.

The sr20de is built-up from the factory.  A set of rings, bearings, and some valvetrain support and it's a near-bulletproof engine.

The transmission issue is my biggest problem.  There just aren't enough rwd qr25de's in junkyards yet, but plenty of morons replace their ka24de with an sr20de and later realize that it was a step sideways, not a step up.  They just bought the sr for its flashy name and technical advantages.
