Fuel tank compatibility
« on: 06:42:24 PM / 04-Nov-11 »
I need to buy a gas tank for my '86 turbo hatch. It has proved to be quite a pain in the ass trying to find one, no luck so far. Any other car's gas tanks that will work for my car? Nissan wanted me to pay $530 for one.
.yea that's not happening...

it shouldnt matter, theyre all the same.
FAST shows the two tanks as the same part number #17201, but you can only use the bare S13 tank along with all of the S12 hardware and filler tube.

edit:
S14 tanks do NOT work. theyre completely different shapes.

you think an s13 one may be cheaper than an s12 one if they were both used?

This is wrong. The S12 fuel tank is part number 17202-06F01 and there are two S13 tanks: 17202-53F01 and 17202-95F00. "17201" is the item code number from the drawing, used to look up the part number, not the actual part number. I don't know if an S13 tank fits in an S12, but I've been told it does not.

I can tell you from personal experience, that the S13 hatchback fuel tank is in fact a different shape than the S12. It could probably be beaten to fit, but it's something that I didn't want to mess with. The filler neck is also different. I chose to just adapt the fuel sending unit from the S13 to fit into my S12 tank. Now, I need to get it sandblasted to get rid of the excessive amount of rust....

IMHO just try to find a decently clean S12 tank.
