Does your car have a digital dash?

Looks like the engine bay end of the speedometer cable to me - weitrhino is probably right. Feeds into an A/D converter doodad right by the passenger side wheel well.

Could also be the end that's supposed to go into the transmission. Does your speedometer work?

Ditto on speedo cable. Where does the cable trace back to?

Speedo cable at the tranny end. What is in the hole left by this cable's removal?

He's probably talking about the hole where the white gear of the cable you've shown physically inserts into the transmission. There's probably some plug in place where that used to insert; unless you've been topping off your trans fluid weekly or fully avoid left turns.
