Hey guys (n gals if any).,

I have decided to build a NA engine for my S12 specifically for circuit and sprint racing at a club level (but it must be street driven). I have a few options i am considering and would like to hear what you all have to say. I am after simmilar performance as an AE86 around the circuit. Outright power figures dont mean anything on the circuit compared to balance and responsivness, so that said, i am after a responsive, high revving engine. My options are:

1) CA18DE**
2) FJ20E**
3) SR20DE (maybe with VVT)

I would prefere one of the first 2 (**) as they are a direct bolt into the S12 and wont need a different gearbox. The engine that is chosen will recieve full working, including; enlarged ports and pollishing, 3 angle valve grind, cc combustion chambers, shaved head to increase static compression, 4-1 headers, 2.5inch zorst with highflow cat, high flow resinator and tail muffler (gotta be 96dB), pod filter with carbon fibre airbox and cool air piping. Eventually quad throttle bodies or 45mm side drafts will be fitted for that NA induction roar!!

I am open to ideas yous have but i am almost convinced the CA18DE will do the job for a number of reasons:

put the ca16 inlet cam instead of aftermarket cams (cheaper)
mounts are the same (simple quick swap)
cheap to get hold of
they were an australian delivered engine so spares will be easy to access
my new clutch will fit it
it\'s a light engine compared to the fj20
it\'s a compact engine compared to fj20
it has direct valve drive from the camshafts, unlike the SR20
....and at 135HP standard without mods, it makes the CA18ET boys take notice and is a hell of a lot better than the 102HP my CA20E makes atm!!

like i said before, outright power isnt the goal, responsiveness is, so let me know what you all think...............i am sure there are some NA fans out there

cheers

I\'d go with the CA18DE. There are ones you can find in Japan that are pushing 200hp.

An SR20 would be the easiest to get the highest power output from!
An exhaust, tuned intake kit with pod, APEXi S-AFC, head port and polish with a nice dyno tune will reach u 95-100rwkw! This also is from the S13 SR engine! Imagine the S14 vvt and S15 item!

but really any nicely tuned ca18de, sr20de or fj will go nice!

Also you will ned to change your current box if you put in an FJ!

GL and tell us what route you go !

It looks like that motor is a carbureted version...do you have any other information on it?? 8)

CA18DE fully built by Tomei, including its stroker kit bumping it up to 2L. 288Ã,° Tomei Cams. Metal headgasket, rings, etc. all rebuilt by Tomei! Awesome carb manifold, headers, tuned computer, and MDI ignition. this is what was the info with the pictures. It sold for $1000US in Japan.

WTF 1000US...thans almost nothing fo rhte amount of engineering that had to go into it...and I bet it could ruin close to 200hp, or more 8)

get the gtir turbo intake manifold (individual throttle boddies). this will need to be moddified (top half) to position the oppisite way. Use the DET red top injectors (not gtir). 370cc. High comp pistons. treated det rods, treated stock crank, cometic metal head gasket. HKS solid lifter conversion kit (rev as high as y ou like!!) Stock DET cams. N/A or turbo power fc. oh Z32 afm. oh, new oil pump, and get the det cam oil squirters. use the det DIS.

With this you should push about 240hp on race gas. about 10k of revs.

240HP....mmmmmmmmmmmm sounds the goods....i was trying to get a SR20 neo at one stage., but a bit hard to find down here

ok guys, i have a CA18DET on the way, minus turbo, inlet manifold and it needs a headgaskit. My aim is to put the non-turbo ca18de pistons (9.5:1)into the block, swinging off turbo rods and crank. The turbo bock has oil squirters, crank girdle and would be stronger than the ca18de block. the turbo cams offer more lift (so i have heard) and i am replacing the inlet cam with a ca16de item, more lift! Head is getting ported, pollished, shaved, etc..Now i am getting some quad throttle bodies off a 4AGE20V, adapting them to the head, 4-1 headers, 2.5inch exhaust and an aftermarket management system. With a lightened flywheel, heavy duty clutch and a EWP (electric water pump) i will be aiming for 175HP from stage one. Thats not even stressing the block/rods as thats the stock ca18det power figure. It should be killer responsive as well, perfect for the circuit and maybe a drift day or two!! Oh yeah, also getting a LSD center installed into my diff for $250 from a local engineering firm.....its a rip off of the phantom grip! Stage 2 will be 200HP, stage three will be 200HP at wheels!

That sounds like a good idea using the det items and replacing the pistons to DE items!! Should be very reliable and strong!

keep us all updated and get some pics ASAP  8-)

g\'day ppl,

i am sorry to say this, but the atmo ca18de isnt going ahead anymore. I have been having trouble finding insurance for the engine, and the places that will insure me will charge the same as a ca18det, so its turbo power people! I will one day build a spastic twincam atmo engine, but later on. Sorry to dissapoint anyone, but a new motor is still being built, but it will be of turbo format now. i will start another thread when the new motor starts to be installed.

thanks for following this, maybe one day someone (or even myself) will take my ideas and build a nice atmo engine.
