 simple as said above. (i dunno how but i wish i knew how to make a poll) but for everyone to rate this on a scale of 1-10 for each subject if you would.
CA20E swap to a :
                          CA18ET
                          CA18DET
                                    - money//power// ease of swap ( technically and time wise) // potential (without spending over a couple hundred on it) minus the staring cost of the engine of course//

Both are pretty easy, advantage of the ET is that the harness is a direct drop-in for the S12, with the DET you\'ll end up having to join a few wires to get it running.

I might be going to a DET when I get tired of my 20E (or blow it up, whichever comes first  ).

If you have a 71C trans in your S12 (Mk2), then I would just swap the motors and leave the trans and diff where it is. That will save the need for a new drive shaft aswell.

DET is only harder from a wiring point and maybe exhaust, ET is a little easier since it originally came in the S12.

IMO Definatley CA18DET!!. The power of these engines from standard outways ease of install of the ET option by far. Newer, ie less kms etc. Aftermarket support, the list goes on... and besides - are you looking for a  replacement engine for your CA20 or are you looking for an upgrade? I just dont see the ET as a \'worthwhile\' upgrade for the amount of time that goes into an engine swap. From my experience - Do it once - Do it properly.. Having driven both engines, I think you\'d be happier with the result of the twin cam motor. Again - thats just my opinion.. Others may beg to differ

/sh, are you in Oz or in the US?  If you\'re in the US, I would do an ET, because you can go to any parts store and order most any part you\'ll ever need.  Plus, Bart has already proved that they have plenty of potential.

If you\'re on Oz, on the other hand, I\'d probably go DET.  Parts are more readily available there for the DET, and swaps are much cheaper there than here.

My $.02...

i\'m over in the u.s. in the west. i have a 1985 ca20e xe. so would that mean if i got the DET i would need a new tranny or driveshaft?  and i\'d just like to say thanks for you all for your $.02  keep em coming! what i am going for is an easy but still moderatly cheap engine upgrade. i would love the DET but i hear its harder to install for the various reason of tranny, driveshaft and what not. all i plan on doing is a new engine, exaust, intake, and intercooler. with a ET i think that would do quiet well and det would be awesome. right?

I think the DET tranny will use the stock driveshaft, but I know that the DET will bolt up to any CA-series tranny, so you could actually save some money and just buy a DET motorset instead of a clip or engine/tranny combo, as long as your current tranny is in good working order.

But, I would check with some junkyards in your area, and if you can find a car with an ET, grab the motor, wiring harness, and ecu, and you\'d probably have enough left over to grab a T25 and do a quick rebuild and still be about the same price as the DET.  If you do a little shopping around anyway...

well, i actually am tired of my ca20e and don\'t want anything left of it. i want a totally new engine so i will end up buying a whole clip or a eng/tranny set since mine is somewhat toasted. i just have  a few more questoins. which is cheaper ? i don\'t need quotes (ya can if ya like) but just off the top of your head. ET or DET? right now i\'m moving towards the et since i am in the states and more parts are availabe. i am also moving towards it since it is a direct drop in. and i hear the det isn\'t?

ET most definetly is the best bang for the buck.  You can pick em up for next to nothing, and get at least 250hp on the stock bottom end if it\'s in good shape.  And if you ever need to rebuild it, it\'ll still be much cheaper to rebuild and find parts for.  That would be what I would do.

$400? wow thats amazing. with a tranny? did you get this from a buisness or a wrecked one. i\'d do that in a heart beat. i think i\'ll do the ET then.
