Hi guys,
I have an exhaust leak near the turbo area. It seems like it\'s coming from the exhaust manifold and or the turbo. How many gaskets are around that area that might be the cause of a leak? Does somebody have an exploded view of it? Thanks!

Man, I really need to pick myself up one of those FSM\'s.

Cheers;

There is a metal gasket between the manifold and turbo, and another metal one between the turbo and cast o2 housing/ downpipe.  Also 2 gaskets between the exhaust manifold and the head.
6 bolts on the head
4 bolts between the mani and turbo
4 bolts between the turbo and o2 housing
More than likely it the 4 between the mani and turbo...these are nortorious for coming loose.....but check all of them.  May have to take off the heat shields to gain access to them.
What I did was take off the crappy Nissan lock plates, and got some stover self locking nuts......and they haven\'t come loose since.  It\'s been about 4 years now.

You may have a stripped exhaust stud.  If that\'s the cast have no fear.  I have the Helicoil kit for it and all you have to buy is the coil insert.  Check also for \"lost nut\" due to broken lock tap.

The lock plates works as long as you have the right size nuts.  The nuts are M13 and not the M12 JIS standard (Nissan).  For 8mm studs/bolts the nuts comes in either 13 or 12 mm heads.  If you use a M12 nut the plate will not lock and the nut will come off (been there, done that X 4).  If you need help just let me know, I\'m just 15 mins. from Metrotown.

Lock plates are a POS and aren\'t worth the effort or money.  I had Nissan replace all of my lock plates, nuts and studs about 8 years ago.  Spent a crap load of $$ to have them do it....and less than a year later everything was loose again.  I would tighten everything up about every 2 months.  The lock plates kept the nuts from falling off though.  Finally about 4 years ago I heard about these Stover nuts, so I figured what the hell.  I\'ve got them on my exhaust mani studs...and all of the turbo 8mm studs.....and like I said, they haven\'t even began to come loose.  I even re-used them when I put in my new motor last year, and they\'re still tight.
They only cost about 40 cents each
Just my 2 cents though......if you\'ve had success with the lock plates...by all means, use them

That\'s because the boys at the dealer most likely used M8 nuts with M12 head instead because they are standand Nissan item.  If you go to a Nissan dealer you\'ll have to special order those nuts.  You got screwed big time by the dealer.  I have taken my turbo out 4 times and the only time I had a problem with those lock plates was when I had a tap broken.

Well, I ordered my parts today:

2 gaskets for the exhaust manifolds
6 studs/nut/washer for the exhaust manifolds (mine are pretty rusted, might as well replace them)
1 gasket for the turbo inlet pipe
1 gasket for th turbo outlet pipe

About $90 tax in for all of them.

Where you do you buy those lock nuts? And which nuts are you guys talking about?

BOSSMAN, thanks! I might take you up on that offer. I live in North Burnaby.

I have the exploded diagram here from the dealership guys

I had the \"special ordered\" nuts.....like I said...they backed just barley, and the lock plates prevented them from backing off all the way.
I got the car in \'88 with only 60k miles.....and the nuts on the turbo were loose then......and that was the factory assembly.

All I\'m saying is why spend $$ on those crappy lock plates....when you can spend a couple bucks on some Stover nuts that truely work?

I honestly didn\'t have a problem at all with my gaskets. Everything was fine when I got the car at about 140,000 miles and everythings fine with my T25 still   and I even forgot about those stupid lock plates.

I did have to special order those nut\'s though.

Metric stover nuts are not that common even at industrial fastener suppliers.

well.....I found mine at a local nut and bolt supplier in a small town in Florida when I lived there.  Just look in your local yellow pages under \"Nut & Bolt Supplier\"..............or
Do a google search for \"metric stover locking nuts\" or \"metric torque lock nuts\" or \"prevailing torque lock nuts\"  and you\'ll get plenty of hits for online stores that sell them.
Here\'s a place that sells them.....only catch is you have to buy a min. of 25
But still......... it\'s only $2.10 for 25 M8x1.25 and not much more for 25 of the M10s

Now that you mentioned it, when I did this nut case thing there was no Club-S12 and Internet was still in it\'s infancy.  Home depot was still in the States and I think I was using P II computers at work!    Thanks for the link too.
