84 z31 motor into mk1 ca20e hatch.
« on: 02:11:05 PM / 04-May-05 »
I know someone is going to say search...but i have specific questions i dont think can be answered by a search...so i am going to go off now and take up some bandwidth.

I have an 84 z with an automatic that my brother put into a ditch 2 days after xmas...i loved my z!!! The front subframe was a little bit tweaked/rusty tho where as my s12 is straight and prestine. I am thinking about pulling out the vg, doing a complete na build up on it, buying a c series tranny as my b series sucks donkey balls and throwing it into my s12. So far the only problems i can think of having would be the engine mounts and the ecu...would a ecu out of a vg powered mk2 s12 work? Would the eninge mounts out of the z work...or will i need vg powered s12 mounts? (sorry for calling them that...i cant remember if they are xe\'s or se\'s...) At any rate i think it would be cool to take the engine out of the z as it was my first real sports car and i know if i do cams and pistons and rods and everything that its going to haul major ass...especially considering the wieght of the s12...suspensions going to be an issue when i get to it, but i belive a good set of adjustable coils will cure most of my problems.

The intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, engine mounts and the oil pan from the Z won\'t work. The intake hits the firewall, the exhaust hit the firewall, the mounts are just different and the oil pan won\'t clear the cross member. You will need all of these things from an SE 200.

I think it would probably be easier to find an SE and just steal parts from that.  I think you\'re gonna have a little trouble tracking down all the individual parts that Randy just listed...

vg30e_x2_200sx  is right. When I put my turbo Z it was setup even though its Turbo, the NA still has the changes. So you need the oil pan, the oil pipe inside the pan, the SE xmember, the mounts are on the passenger side is changed, the alternator is on the oposite side, the PS pump is moved down, the headers are different, the intake plenum is also different.

Up till a week ago I would have said that it wouldnt be that bad, but I saw an Infinity M30 with an NA VG30 in it and it was setup exactly like the turbo engine but it was missing the turbo. So apparently Nissan had at least 3 setups for this engine for different cars. Oh not to mention that you would need an R200 Diff from an SE and the driveshaft, tranny, and halfshafts.

I forgot to mention you would need the Engine harness from an SE too.

Why do you need a R200, drive shaft, tranny, and half shafts??? Use a VG bellhousing CA tranny (b or c doesn\'t matter); driveshaft you already have; R180 that you already have and half shafts that you already have.  Or swipe the R200 and half shafts from the Z31 that you have...but you really don\'t need a different drive shaft...

It\'s not just the crossmember. The intake from the Z31 will hit the firewall in a really bad way. Same thing with the exhaust manifolds. The angle just doesn\'t work. If you end up moving the engine foreward then you are looking at clearance issues witha a radiator. That\'s why Nissan made all this special stuff fo the VG in the S12......to make it fit.

If they could have just used the crossmember from the Z31 don\'t ya think Nissan would have done that instead of completly enginering all new componants?
I know it sucks, but that\'s life on this Earth I guess.....nothing worth while is ever gonna be easy.
