Hi Everyone, I\'m a noob, and i apologize in advance if this question has already been answered elsewhere on the site. What I\'m wondering is if there are any dual cam cylinder heads that will bolt on to a CA20E.  :honda:

i thought that the CA18DE/CA16DE head would BOLT ON,.. but that it would take EXTENSIVE work to actually get it running

not tonnes, just the fabbing of a timing tensioner...and possibly a longer belt or chain to accomodate the added stroke of the CA20. The thing that I\'m not sure was solved that would put a complete damper on the project is whether the water coolong and oil chambers match between the SOHC and the DOHC. I think they do match (CA18ET head fits a CA18DET bottom end) but I know not 100%.
 
Also you have to run the CA**DE electronics because of the coil on plug and lack of a distributer...

Everything matches up (water jackets, oil galleys, etc), the head gaskets are even the same. It\'s just the timing belt issue that puts a clamp on everything, since it\'s hard to find someone to make the custom belt.

Has it been done before?  I have been thinking about this for some time.  It might be easier (and cheaper) to just get a stroker kit for my ca18det :-D

I do miss the low down torque that the CA20E had :(

The ca20e had tourqe?! LOL  But there is a company called SDP/SI Their website is [url]www.sdp-si.com[/a] and they deal with all kinds of timing belts and pulleys and such for cutom applications, you would have to put it all together and then measure it up and give them a call with the belt dimensions.

Been done, we\'ve been through this conversation before, but it probably got deleted in the big crash earlier this year.  I\'ll dig up the link to it, but here\'s the gist of it:

Need to drill and tap an extra hole for the tensioner.  Need to find some head bolts, or drill and tap your block for the larger DE bolts.  Need a longer timing belt due to the taller CA20 block.  Need a custom crank pulley, because the snout on the DE is larger.  Need to use the DE engine managment, as they use coilpacks instead of a distributor.

Can be done, has been done, but it\'s a lot of work, and in my opinion, the CA20 bottom end is kinda weak unless your planning on upgrading the bottom end with some upgraded rods and forged pistons (which would again, have to be custom).

Would be cool to see, but I\'m just not sure the extra .2L of displacement is worth all the custom work.

Oh, and BTW, it\'s been done in a Pulsar, not an S12, but should be more or less the same, except that you need a RWD intake manifold to face the right direction.

Wrong-ish. It comes very close to though. The CA18DET head bolts are thicker & the timing belt path needs a fair bit of work, but all of the galleries line up perfectly as the CA block is common accross all models, just the cylinder size, head bolts & front face are the only major differences as far as the head goes. What you do miss out on is the wonderful crank cap cradle & 2nd oil squiters.

My CA20DET is nearly finished. Just gotta get the time to finish off the oil plumbing & wiring, then crank the beast over & set the timing.

 Yes it CAN with alot of $$ but who would build something to gain nothing? Sure its custom, but impractical.

Just cause you wouldn\'t do it doesn\'t mean it can\'t be done...

Candellan, we need some more details!!!  I\'d like to see how you approached the whole deal!  What did you use for rods, head gasket, pistons, etc.?

YellowPreludeR is right, this conversion is far from sensible, but sanity is vastly overrated. I should\'ve gone for the FJ20 that I now have sitting in many pieces in the back of the garage. It\'s very, very tough & more than capable of matching RB20\'s & 25\'s with the right turbo.

Joel07, I used the standard rods but had them shot peened. All new non-forged pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets (& I mean everything, there are now no stocks of rear oil seal gaskets in Australia thanks to me  :evillaug: ).
